6 Jean Monnet In brief Promote excellence in teaching and research in the field of EU studies worldwide Objectives: Equip students and young professionals with knowledge of EU subjects Stimulate teaching and research on the EU, with particular emphasis on EU integration process Foster dialogue between the EU and the world in higher education Particularly interesting for candidate and potential candidate countries

7 Jean Monnet How does it work? Project grants to promote excellence through: 1.Teaching and research (Modules, Chairs, Centres of Excellence) 2.Policy debate with academic world (Networks, Projects) 3.Support to activities of institutions or associations

8 Jean Monnet 1) Teaching and research activities Jean Monnet Module: short teaching programme on EU studies at an HEI. Each Module lasts 3 years with min. 40 teaching hours per academic year. Jean Monnet Chair: teaching post with a specialisation in EU studies for university professors or senior lecturers. One professor, who must provide min. 90 teaching hours per academic year for 3 consecutive years. Centre of Excellence: focal point of competence and knowledge on EU subjects. Academic responsibility of a Centre must be assumed by Jean Monnet Chair holder and lasts 3 years.

9 Jean Monnet 2) Support to institutions or associations (three year projects) Jean Monnet support to institutions that enhance teacher and training activities on EU subject areas to foster activities to collect, elaborate, analyse and disseminate EU subjects and their teaching to organise Master level courses on EU issues or professional advanced training Jean Monnet support to associations that contribute to the study of the European integration process that organise and carry out statutory activities of associations dealing with EU studies (e.g. newsletters, website, promotional events etc.) that publicize EU facts among a wider public enhancing active citizenship

10 Jean Monnet 3) Policy debate and exchanges Jean Monnet Networks: funding for 3 years to foster creation and development of consortia of international players (HEIs, Centres of Excellence, departments, teams, individual experts, etc.) in the area of EU studies Activities that cannot be achieved at national level > involvement of min. 5 partner institutions from 5 different countries Jean Monnet Projects: granted for 1-2 years to support innovation (e.g. projects on Learning EU at School), crossfertilisation and spread of EU content Based on unilateral proposals although activities may involve other partners

Annual Calls for Proposals issued by EACEA Applications from institutions in any country of the world Only one applicant institution but involvement of partner institutions is possible (e.g. networks) Proposals assessed by experts on basis of relevance, quality of design, quality of team, impact and dissemination Piece of advice Submit applications in the framework of action types other than "training" actions, e.g. projects & networks, where the success rate can be even higher due to less concurrence!

14 Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees In brief Continuation of Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses Excellent Joint Master courses offered by consortia of HEIs from Programme and Partner Countries to attract best students worldwide through high level scholarships 220 Joint Master Degree courses to be selected, Expected to fund 25,000 students and staff over 7 years

15 Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees Structure Students required to study in at least 2 of the Programme Countries represented in the consortium Study period can last 12/18/24 months (60/90/120 ECTS) Award of double, multiple or joint degree Full degree scholarships to the best students worldwide (min. 75% from Partner Countries)

16 Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees How do they work Minimum consortium of 3 HEIs from different Programme Countries HEIs from Partner Countries can take part Grant: around 3 M, funding 3 annual intakes of students and guest academics Total costs of students scholarships Annual flat-rate fee for management and guest academic costs

17 Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees Taking part as an organisation EMJMDs are open to any public or private Higher Education Institution (HEI) Non-academic partners (enterprises, non-profit organisations, NGOs, foundations, etc.) located in Programme or Partner Countries Applicant: must be an HEI established in a Programme Country (on behalf of the JMD consortium)

34 Capacity building in higher education Piece of advice (based on Tempus experience) Areas to focus on should be selected according to national/regional priorities available for each country/region and taking into consideration the subjects that have not been widely addressed in the past under Tempus E.g. "Tourism" for projects dedicated to Curriculum Development or "Engineering" as a discipline. Above average proportion of projects addressing "LLL policies and approaches" Try to broaden the scope of collaboration to other Programme Countries (for now, mainly AT, BE, DE, IT, SI, EL, BU)
