3 Introduction Estimated time to complete this lab 30 minutes Objectives After completing this lab, you will be able to: Configure storage classifications. Define SMB managed storage. Assign SMB storage to servers. Assign SMB storage to clouds. Prerequisites Before working on this lab, you must have: An understanding of storage concepts The ability to use Windows PowerShell. Overview of the lab In this lab, you will explore using System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager to manage the storage elements of your data center fabric. Virtual Machine Manager provides you with the ability to centrally manage all storage in your data center and allocation storage to clouds and servers as needed. Storage can be managed using industry standard protocols such as SMI-S or managed using native Windows File Servers. Virtual machine technology This lab is completed using virtual machines that run on Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V technology. To log on to the virtual machines, press CTRL+ALT+END and enter your logon credentials. Computers in this lab This lab uses computers as described in the following table. Before you begin the lab, you must ensure that the virtual machines are started and then log on to the computers. Computer Role Configuration DC Domain controller, iscsi SAN Contains a virtual iscsi SAN to provide storage for cluster nodes on a storage network. 4 Note regarding pre-release software Portions of this lab include software that is not yet released, and as such may still contain active or known issues. While every effort has been made to ensure this lab functions as written, unknown or unanticipated results may be encountered as a result of using pre-release software. Note regarding user account control Some steps in this lab may be subject to user account control. User account control is a technology which provides additional security to computers by requesting that users confirm actions that require administrative rights. Tasks that generate a user account control confirmation are denoted using a shield icon. If you encounter a shield icon, confirm your action by selecting the appropriate button in the dialog box that is presented. Note on activation The virtual machines for these labs may have been built by using software that has not been activated. This is by design in the lab to prevent the redistribution of activated software. The unactivated state of software has been taken into account in the design of the lab. Consequently, the lab is in no way affected by this state. For operating systems other than Windows 8.1, click Cancel or Close if prompted by an activation dialog box. If you are prompted by an Activate screen for Windows 8.1, press the Windows key to display the Start screen. Lab created by HynesITe, Inc. 5 Exercise 1: Manage a Windows File Server. In this exercise, you will configure System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager to manage SMB storage presented by a Windows file server. In this exercise, you will use a single file server, however the procedures are identical when using a Scale-Out File Server (SOFS) in a dual controller scenario to provide redundancy, multi-path, and load balancing of storage IO. Create storage classifications Storage classifications allow you to define abstract groups of storage based on a common criteria, type, or standard. When assigning storage to VMs or clouds, you can assign storage classifications without having to worry about the specific underlying storage type. In this task, you will create two storage classifications, SMB and iscsi. 1. From the taskbar, open the Virtual Machine Manager Console. It will take a few moments for the console to appear. 2. In the Virtual Machine Manager Console, click Fabric. 3. In Fabric, click Storage. 4. On the ribbon, click Create, and then click Create Storage Classification. 5. In Name, type SMB Storage, type any description, and then click Add. 6. Click Create Storage Classification. 7. In Name, type iscsi Storage, type any description, and then click Add. Create a managed file share Virtual Machine Manager allows you to use a Windows file server or Scale-Out File Server as a storage location for virtual machine configuration files and disk files. To use a file server, you must first configure the file server as a managed file server, and then classify any file shares. 1. In the Virtual Machine Manager Console, on the ribbon, click Add Resources, and then click Storage Devices. 2. In Select Provider Type, click Windows-based file server, and then click Next. 3. In Provider IP address or FQDN, type dc.contoso.com. 4. In Run As account, click Browse. 5. Click Create Run As account. 6. In Name, type VMM Administrator. Lab created by HynesITe, Inc. For questions or comments, send an message to labs@holsystems.com Page 5
6 7. In User name, type Contoso\Administrator. 8. In Password and Confirm Password, type Passw0rd! The Run As account for a file server storage device must have permission to create and manage permissions on file shares on any server where the account will be used. You are using the Administrator account to keep your configuration very simple. 9. Click OK. 10. Click OK. 11. In the Add Storage Devices Wizard, click Next. 12. When Discovery has completed, click Next. 13. On Select Storage Devices, click Next. Notice that all existing file shares are listed. You will not use any of these shares but will instead create a new file share to be used later. 14. Click Finish. 15. Close the Jobs window. 16. Expand Storage, and then click File Servers. Create a new managed file share In this task, you will create a new file share to be used when creating new virtual machines. 1. In Virtual Machine Manager, under Storage, click File Servers. 2. On the ribbon, click Create File Share. TIP: Depending on your display, you might first have to click Create on the ribbon. 3. In File server, ensure dc.contoso.com is selected. 4. In Name, type VM-Storage. 5. In Classification, select SMB Storage. 6. In Local Path, type E:\VMStore, and then click Create. Notice that the new file share is created and classified, and that the capacity reflects the capacity of the underlying storage volume. Also notice that the managed flag is set to yes. Assign SMB storage to Hyper-V servers In this task, you will add two Hyper-V servers to Virtual Machine Manager and then allocate SMB-based storage and specific storage shares to those servers. The act of assigning storage shares to Hyper-V servers ensures that permissions on those shares are set correctly. Lab created by HynesITe, Inc. For questions or comments, send an message to labs@holsystems.com Page 6
7 1. In Fabric, under Storage, click File Servers. 2. On the ribbon, click Add-Resources, and then click Hyper-V Hosts and Clusters. 3. On the Resource Location page, click Next. 4. In Credentials, click Browse, click VMM Administrator, and then click OK. 5. Click Next. 6. In Discovery Scope, in Computer Names, type Server1 and Server2 each on a separate line, and then click Next. 7. In Target resources, click Select All, and then click Next. 8. On the Host settings page, click Next, and then click Finish. 9. Wait for the two Add virtual machine host jobs to complete, and then close the Jobs window. It will take a few moments for the job to complete. If you receive a warning that Multipath I/O is not enabled, you may safely ignore the warning. 10. In Servers, click Server1, and then click Properties. 11. In Server1.contoso.com Properties, click Storage. 12. Click Add, and then click Add File Share. 13. In File share path, select \\dc.contoso.com\vm-storage, and then click OK. 14. In Virtual Machine Manager, on the Home tab, click PowerShell. 15. In Windows PowerShell, type the following command, and then press ENTER. Register-SCStorageFileShare VMHost server2.contoso.com StorageFileShare (Get-SCStorageFileShare Name VM-Storage) 16.
