3 From early days 1855 : Creation of the French national meteorological service within Paris Observatory by Le Verrier 1922 : Creation of a dedicated centre for meteorological training in Saint-Cyr 1948 : Creation of the Ecole de la Météorologie (Saint-Cyr and Paris), part of the research and training branch of the national meteorological service 1954 : First accreditation to issue «Ingénieur»(Master of Engineering) grades 1969 : The college becomes independent from the research branch and is renamed Ecole Nationale de la Météorologie (E.N.M.) 1982 : The ENM and the CNRM (Research) are the first NMS branches to be relocated from Paris to Toulouse 1988 : First accreditation to issue Master of science degrees (with Toulouse University) 1995 : EU-funded EUROMET project (Computed Aided Learning CAL - ENM program manager) 2006 : The ENM is certified ISO 9001:2000 compliant renewed ISO 9001:2008 in : ENM joins Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse (INPT)

4 to our days ENM is the department of the French national meteorological service, Météo-France, in charge of : Initial training Technical staff of Météo-France Ministry of Defense 's meteorological specialists Contribution to the training of staff of foreign meteorological services Engineers and specialists ( Master of sc.) in atmospheric physics, meteorology, climatology and connected sciences Continuous training Professional training in meteorology and climate Continuous training of Météo-France's staff, in all fields Recruitment to achieve one of the missions of Météo-France, education and training

5 A supporting environment ENM is part of a large campus, unique in Europe, dedicated to meteorology and related applications («la Météopole») bringing together : Météo-France operational branches (Forecasting, Observation, IT, Business, Climatology), research and training The new meteorological support centre for French Armies (CISMF) The European Centre for Advanced Research and Training in Scientific Computing (CERFACS) The French National Centre for Hydrometeorology and Support to Floods Forecasts (SCHAPI) It benefits from Toulouse leadership in the aeronautical and space industry and of its renowned quality of life.

13 Training materials Library books annual budget : cooperation with INPT started in 2010 : Common rules for lending and manage resources. Present action in order to share a portal for online reviews. Books publishing ENM in charge of «cours et manuels»set : 18 issues on different topics dealing with meteorology Written by ENM teachers or Meteo-France experts Sold by Meteo-France and by bookshops Books written for outside publishers : ENM takes part to different actions as writing and rereading. Support to French ministry of Education, for scientific programsoriented to colleges teachers training (Science à l'ecole) on-line presentations

19 ENM future plans Opening more widely our courses to non-météo-france students Preliminary «market studies»suggest that ENM students would find a job : their skills make them attractive as meteo / climate experts in companies exposed to these parameters Develop international relationships with educational organisms (Erasmus opportunities) Develop significantly distance learning methods Our training resources site is now open to all Météo-France staff Météo-France has recently decided to acquire a multipurpose web conferencing tool Language barrier still a limit on foreign expansion MFI (Météo-France International) has growing needs in that area Things are slowly changing
