Guidance Newsletter Summer 2016 Guidance Staff Erin Biancella Supervisor of Guidance Christine Ayers School Counselor Jeff Fonseca School Counselor EC Peters School Counselor Sue Lamela Student Assistance Counselor Congratulations to the Class of 2016! We are extremely proud of our graduates. Our seniors have exciting futures ahead and we wish them well as they continue to pursue their goals. At this year s Scholarship Night, students were awarded $150,000 in local scholarships from the community. During the Award s Breakfast, many seniors were recognized for honor roll, attendance, and academic achievements. The following is a list of schools our graduates will be in attendance at in the fall. Contact Us: x7060 Follow me to Page 4
Summer Class of 2017 Summer To Do List: Study for the SAT/ACT. Use the online tools and apps, as well as books you can purchase or borrow from the library. Research scholarships. Visit Colleges! This is a great time to see campuses and speak with admissions. Review and revise your college list on Naviance. Research potential majors using Naviance. Continue to build your resume. How will you spend your summer? Go to pg. SAVE THE DATE: 3 Parents and Students of the Class of 2018 and 2019 BHS and Beyond, July 11 th, 6-7 pm 2
How will you spend your summer? What is the role of the Student Assistance Counselor? The goal of the student assistance program is to enhance the resiliency of adolescents who are at risk for substance use and other destructive behaviors. The Student Assistance Counselor provides individual and group counseling, coordinates school-wide prevention programs and provides information and referral to treatment services. To refer a student to a group or for individual counseling, please call Sue Lamela, Student Assistance Counselor in the Guidance Department. How you spend your summer can influence your admission to college. Although summer activities won t compensate for low grades or poor test scores, what you choose to do during your vacation can give you an edge in the admissions game. If you have an idea of your future career or an interest in a particular subject, spending the summer learning more about these can pay off in both experience and as a topic for your personal essay in that admissions application. Internships or community service can give you real world experience in a particular career and can provide you with opportunities for personal growth. Consider taking a summer course at OCC. Taking a college course can help prepare you for the rigor of college and can start your college transcript. Whatever you choose to do this summer, do more than just tweet, snapchat, and hang out. Colleges look to fill their classes with interesting, motivated young people. By making good use of your summer vacation, not only are you benefiting personally, but you are becoming a more appealing candidate for admission. 3

Students can use the information they learn about themselves to start researching options for their futures. Students use Naviance to explore colleges and other postsecondary options that offer programs that match their career plans. 1 2 Parental Access: You can contact your child s counselor if you would like parental access to your child s Naviance account. Resume Building: Start working on your resume as early as freshmen year. 3 Plan Your Schedule: Look up courses required in high school for different college admissions. 4

Are Your On Track for Graduation? If you have failed any courses, you have the opportunity to recover credit through summer school. Please contact the Guidance Office as soon as possible for more information. You can also find links on the Guidance Webpage with information regarding different companies that offer summer school. If online learning is not an option for you, there may be the possibility of credit recovery during the school year. Students at Barnegat High School have the opportunity to take 40 credits per year, for a total of 160 Credits throughout high school. In the state of NJ, one must pass 120 Credits to graduate. Therefore, there is room in your schedule at BHS to recover credit if necessary. However, in order to be eligible to participate in sports in the school year, students must have passed 30 credits in In addition to course work requirements, there is a state testing requirement needed in order to graduate in NJ. See below. State Testing Requirement: Class of 2017, 2018, 2019 The Guidance Office is open all summer, Monday through Thursday. There is a counselor available each day. Please call to schedule an appointment. 6
