1 BISHOP NOLL INSTITUTE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT NEWSLETTER April 2016 October 2014 Ms. Michele Arnold, Director of Guidance ext Ms. Jessica Ramos, College Counselor ext Mrs. Lindsey Abbasy, Resource Teacher ext Mrs. Evelyn Roldan, Guidance Secretary ext Ms. Arnold is the person to see if you need help with schedules, troubles with school, home or friends. Ms. Arnold is also the person if you should need a tutor or if you are a 21 st Century Scholar. Ms. Arnold has many resources available to students so please come and see her. Ms. Ramos is the person to see if you need help finding a college, applying to a college, filling out the FASFA, transcripts to a college, verification of credits for college, applying for scholarships, SAT and ACT information and much more. Mrs. Abbasy is the person to see if you are having unique learning needs. Mrs. Abbasy helps students with IEP s and learning disabilities. Mrs. Roldan is here to answer any general questions a student may have, answer all phone calls and make appointments. Everyone is guidance is happy to help with any questions a student may have.

2 During the month of April guidance is visiting Theology classes to schedule classes for next year. The guidance office is working very diligently to have all student schedules for the next school year out to the students before the end of this school year. ISTEP test for 10 th grade begins on April 18 th. May begins End of Course Assessment (ECA) testing. This test is required by all students in enrolled in Algebra 1 and English 10. English 10 test begins on May 2 nd and Algebra 1 begins on May 12. Algebra 1 and English 10 test are required to be passed for graduation. This is an Indiana Department of Education requirement. Also any student that has tested previously and did not pass will be retested during this time. PLEASE make sure your students are in school during this time. Make up test can become difficult due to the short testing window the state provides us. During the month of May students will begin taking AP test. Please make sure students are in school for these test as well. This test takes several hours to complete and, therefore, make up are even more difficult. In May, seniors will also be given a form from Guidance asking them to list the college/university they will be attending in the fall. Please make sure your senior completes this form and turns it in to the guidance office. Also please notify the guidance office of any scholarship monies offered to the students. We would like to hear about all colleges and universities offering your student monies. ***St. Catherines Auxiliary scholarship due April 14 th*** ***Hammond Common Council due April 15 th***\

No mechanical pencils please. Students that would like to prepare for SAT or ACT are welcome to come to guidance to get a practice test booklet.

Khan Academy is another valuable website, please visit are also many books that you can purchase on Amazon or visit your local library.

Start researching what you could do now to prepare ( Plan classes you need to take for your sophomore year. Look into Service Activities such as volunteering at your church or community center. Grade 11- Fall List of Tasks College Planning Juniors All juniors should have taken AT LEAST one SAT and ACT by June 2016.

6 Develop a list of colleges/universities that you are interested in. o Request information from each school including view books and financial aid information o Pick schools that vary in size, location, public or private institutions. o Research degree programs Consider attending summer programs at colleges and universities (look at the BNI guidance page under Summer Programs ) Plan college campus visits during spring break Memorize your social security number if you haven t already. It will be your identity on campus. Athletes who are planning on playing in college should register for the NCAA or NAIA Eligibility Centers Revise Student Resumes Grade 12 - List of Tasks Financial Aid Resources: College Planning Seniors Continue to maintain good grades. DO NOT let Senioritis get the best of you. Schools can and have reversed admission and scholarship decisions. Continue to fill out college applications Complete your application essays, proofread them vigorously for mistakes. Consider asking an English teacher to review your essays Please fill out the proper transcript request forms and allow 5 days for completed transcript requests. Track processed transcripts via the google doc Senior Transcript Request Log Class of 2016 Start the FASFA process at fafsa.ed.gov. If help is required please come to guidance or attend one of the FASFA presentations. Keep working on grades for second semester. If you are having a hard time in a class ask for a tutor or speak with your teacher. Inform the guidance office with any college acceptances and any scholarship monies being offered to you. We keep track of all monies and acceptance even if you decide not to attend a certain school. Please keep up with your Naviance pages. Decide which college to attend and notify the school of your decision. Keep track of and observe all deadlines fro sending in required fees and paperwork. Notify school you will not be attending of your decision. Continue to look for scholarship opportunities Watch the mail for Student Aid Report (SAR) it should arrive four weeks after the FASFA is filed. Sign and send in a promissory note if you are borrowing money. Notify your college about any outside scholarships you received.
