2 1 System Description and Configuration of sat-nms SMU The sat-nms SMU is the unit you were always looking for in your satellite ground station and/or satellite head-end environment. It enables you to perform all kind of signal management in a simple to use and very flexible unit. Due to the choice of different card modules you are able to build your own sat-nms SMU best matching the requirements of your application. Each card module is designed to fulfil a specific function and the combination of different card modules gives you the possibility to solve your signal handling problems. If you find any application not descript in this overview, please let us know and we will add it in this document! 2.1 sat-nms MPC (Multipurpose Chassis) The sat-nms MPC (Multipurpose Chassis) can be fitted with variations of different card modules. The chassis provides the remote M&C interface via web-browser, SNMP, HTTP GET functions and RS232 interface. It is equipped with two hot-pluggable power supplies. As an option the 2RU 19 rack-mount chassis also provides an LCD display and keyboard for local control. One sat-nms MPC can handle up to 5 hot-pluggable modules. This flexible system chassis is able to be fitted with a combination of different modules to meet your system requirements. 2.2 sat-nms UMPS (Universal Multipurpose Switch) The module sat-nms UMPS (Universal Multipurpose Switch) with integrated DC inserter, IF input level monitoring and automatic switch functionally is a highly sophisticated module designed for professional satellite receive applications or signal backup switching. Each sat-nms UMPS module contains four coaxial latching IF 2-way switches (SPDT). Each input is able to supply DC voltage to an LNB and performs monitoring of the input signal power. This enables the sat-nms UMPS to switch automatically to the second source in case of violation of the adjustable thresholds. In cases where the DC insertion is not required, there is a module available with an extended frequency range of 5MHz to 3000MHz. 2.3 sat-nms TMPS (Transfer Multipurpose Switch) The module sat-nms TMPS (Transfer Multipurpose Switch) with integrated DC inserter, IF input level monitoring, WG switch drivers and automatic switch functionally is a module designed for professional satellite receive applications like LNB Redundancy Switching Systems. Each sat-nms TMPS module contains two coaxial IF transfer switches (DPDT) and two waveguide switch driver outputs that are virtually connected to the transfer switches on the board. Each coaxial input is able to supply DC voltage to an LNB and performs monitoring of the input signal power. This enables the sat-nms TMPS to switch automatically in case of violation of the adjustable thresholds (DC Current and/or IF Signal Level). 3 3 Mechanical Details of the sat-nms SMU S a t S e r v i c e The mechanical configuration of the sat-nms SMU Family is based on a 19 2 height units (HU) rackmount chassis providing space for 5 modules which can be a mix of different card modules. In the setup screen of the web-browser interface each slot can be individual configured. The sat-nms MPC is equipped with a dual hot-pluggable power supply and a MNC card module. Already the baseline configuration includes redundant power supplies. So you do not have to add a second power supply as in competing products. Optional feature is the hotswap capability, given in any case for the optical transmitter and receiver. Furthermore, PC boards can be extended to the power supplies. With the SatService solution you will get full local and remote monitoring & control capability. An alarm log shows the last 20 alarm messages. The M&C module includes an integrated web server with an Ethernet interface so that the operator can also monitor and control all integrated cards via its webbrowser - both locally or remote whenever it is connected to the same LAN. 11 7 Special Configurations Some examples that you can realize with our sat-nms SMU Signal Management Unit and the different slide-in card modules 7.1 2:1 LNB Redundancy System with Dual Output LNBs A typical application for the sat-nms SMU is a 2:1 LNB Redundancy System with Dual Output LNBs. Normal 2:1 Redundancy System have the limitation of only one L-Band coaxial output for each LNB. The old standard configurations were done by using ganged waveguide/coaxial switches outdoor inside the antenna hub. The sat-nms SMU is using standard waveguide switches and internal coaxial transfer switches. Both switch types will toggle synchronously in case of a fault. The advanced monitoring ability of the TMPS card module allows automatic switching on different parameters, as current (above or below threshold) or signaling strength (above or below threshold) The advantages of the sat-nms SMU are: DC Insertion Backup Switching Current Monitoring Signal Strength / Level Monitoring Requires: 1off. 12 7.2 2:1 LNB Redundancy System with Dual Output LNBs with 1:4 Splitter and Lineamplifier This is an advanced application and a combination on different card module types of the sat-nms SMU. Normal 2:1 Redundancy System have the limitation of only one L-Band coaxial output for each LNB. The old standard configurations were done by using ganged waveguide/coaxial switches outdoor inside the antenna hub. The sat-nms SMU is using standard waveguide switches and internal coaxial transfer switches. Both switch types will toggle synchronously in case of a fault. The advanced monitoring ability of the TMPS card module allows automatic switching on different parameters, as current (above or below threshold) or signaling strength (above or below threshold). The switches outputs of the LNBs will be distributed by the sat-nms CS24 card module. To compensate for the following cableloss and equalization of the signals levels a sat-nms LDCI is used. This application could be extended by using another sat-nms SMU with additional sat-nms LDCI cards. 17 7.8 DC Inserter in Front of L-Band Matrix S a t S e r v i c e In cases your L-band matrix needs to power LNBs and/or needs to measure the matrix input signal power, the satnms SMU with installed LDCI is the unit of choice. It does not only allow to DC power the LNBs it also is variable in gain to equalize the different inputs signals of the matrix. 18 7.10 TX n:1 Redundancy Switching together with sat-nms MNC Monitoring & Control In combination with the sat-nms MNC system the application of the sat-nms SMU are multiplied. Together with the automatic redundancy functionality of the SMU as a standalone system, the sat-nms MNC could handle various additional operations, like mirroring of parameters.
