7 Professional Development: Lessons Learned Situation Results Approach Result HS teachers have very little time during/after school No time to travel to training, low attendance Offer training as Prof Dev or In- Service that is already on their school calendar, modifying content to fit within the allotted time Sessions can vary from 5 to 120 teachers, but they do show up! No room in their class curriculum to introduce new subjects Even cool stuff like nano doesn t get introduced 1. Develop experiment to fit within timeframe available 2. Implement into course when appropriate (teacher s discretion) as an alternative to traditional experiments covering core topics Synergy methodology is guiding module development with teacher input as a key factor Willing to do something at the beginning or end of the summer Get training in June or August Offer summer Educators Academy with stipend (if funding can be obtained) and credit Full rosters in these academies or courses High attendance at certain events Difficult to ensure handson Additional staff recruited to divide into smaller rotating groups Positive feedback from a variety of backgrounds participating in the sessions

8 What we really wanted Easy for high school teachers Get to students to have an impact on their interest in science Increase interest, knowledge and career path decision

9 A Module is.. Module Topic or concept specific Topic specific 3 to 5 hours of class time Background information on the topic Prerequisites List of companion traditional concepts Lecture Power Points Nano Concepts As Appropriate: Demonstrations Activities Experiments Student Assessment Topics for Discussion Models, Simulations, animations Related journal articles and worksheets

10 Correlation to Traditional Sciences Specific Content Areas And Nano Central Concepts Prerequisites Math Sciences Traditional/Macro level concepts needed Industry Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, Soft Skills Standards High School, State, National Module Topic or concept specific Applications Skill, Knowledge and Abilities Outcome Statements Competencies
