1 Kennebec Valley Community College Northeast Provider of Solar Instructor Training Program Curriculum Program Description Kennebec Valley Community College (KVCC), acting as the Northeast Provider of Solar Instructor Training North, is one of nine regional training providers selected by the US Department of Energy (DOE) as part of the Solar Instructor Training Network. The primary goal of this project is to help facilitate and support the creation of a well-trained and highly qualified solar energy workforce of sufficient size and diversity to meet the projected needs of the solar industry. (Additional information about DOE s Solar Instructor Training Network can be found at: Beginning in the spring of 2013, KVCC will provide regional training opportunities for educational faculty who will play a role in the installation and design of residential and commercial solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in the Northeast region. To do so, KVCC will develop partnerships with Local Educational Institutions (LEI s) to provide initial and ongoing solar PV instructor training and mentoring opportunities from This network of partners will collaborate to promote the successful
2 advancement of solar PV training within the seven state region that includes: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. This comprehensive program will help LEI s integrate solar PV content into their existing programs. KVCC will facilitate the training and professional development of instructors through hands-on and online courses, webinars, conference calls, and other distance learning activities. KVCC will also provide mentoring relationships with instructor trainees, and coordinate the collaboration and sharing of best practices within the network. Audience This instructor training program is designed to match the needs of career and technical high schools, community colleges, baccalaureate institutions, trade apprenticeship and union training programs, including the following curriculum audiences: Electrical Technology Construction Management/Building Technology Engineering and Architecture Program Details and Support Enrollment in the program will be limited to 60 instructors over the two year program timeframe. An open application period will begin on January 21, Applications from prospective enrollees will be due by March 1, Applicants must demonstrate significant teaching and training experience in electrical technology, construction management, building technology, engineering or architecture. Additionally, applicants must commit to participate in the full two year program, prove there is substantial support from an established LEI with appropriate training facilities, and sign a long term commitment (Memorandum of Understanding MOU) to implement the information provided through this program into a existing curriculum program. Finally, as part of a federally funded initiative, LEI s will be expected to submit data to KVCC regarding the courses/students they will instruct in the future as a result of participating in this program. KVCC s Northeast Solar Instructor Training Program will provide training and course applicable resources to faculty at partnering institutions courses without cost. Additionally, a one-time stipend in the amount of $500 will be provided for each instructor trainee to assist with travel expenses for the program. This stipend can be utilized during 2013 and 2014.
