1 GCCHS Acer Tablets Setup Instructions Remove the tablet from the box Remove the small box from inside the Acer box that contains your power adapter, stylus, VGA adapter and USB adapter for your keyboard. Connect your power adapter to the left side of your tablet as shown in the figure below Turn on the tablet by pressing the upper most button on the right side of the tablet. At the first screen, Swipe from the bottom of the screen to the top of the screen to get to the logon screen. Tap the WiFi bars icon in the bottom left of your screen and join to your home s wireless network by tapping on it s name and entering the security key. Log in as DioUser with password of.pa$$word. (Don t forget the periods before and after in the password) You should now be at the Metro Screen with tiles representing various programs. DO NOT OPEN ANY PROGRAMS AT THIS TIME! Page 1 of 11

2 Pairing the Bluetooth keyboard cover o Unplug your power adapter from the tablet o Unwrap your keyboard/cover o Insert you tablet into the cover o Reinsert your power adapter into the tablet o Locate the USB cable in your accessories box. o Connect the large end of the USB cable from your accessories box to the USB port on the left side of your tablet o Connect the small end of the USB cable to the mini USB port on your keyboard. (This is how you charge the keyboard s battery) o Swipe from the right of the screen on the tablet to the left to bring up the Charms toolbar o Tap Settings Page 2 of 11

3 o Tap Change PC Settings o Tap PC and Devices o Hold down the Power button at the top left of the Bluetooth keyboard for about 5 seconds until the two LEDs start flashing alternating blue and orange. Page 3 of 11

4 o Tap Bluetooth o The Tablet will discover the keyboard. Wait until it shows the following Keyboard Acer Iconia W700 Bluetooth Keyboard. o Tap Pair o Enter the numbered passcode by typing the numbers on your bluetooth keyboard and then press ENTER on your keyboard. (Your keystrokes will not be seen on the screen so type carefully.) This can take a few minutes so please be patient. o The keyboard is now setup to use with your tablet. Airwatch Enrollment o Start at the Metro Screen (press Windows button at bottom of tablet if necessary) o Tap the Search icon (magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner) o Type workplace in the Search field, Workplace settings will appear. You do not need to tap the search icon. o Tap Workplace Settings Page 4 of 11

5 o Enter your school network account like so: (This does not mean you have a school at this point. This is your Airwatch account. School accounts will be introduced at a later date.) o Turn Automatically Detect Server address off by pressing and sliding the On switch to the left. o Type airwatch.dioceseofgreensburg.org/deviceservices/discovery.svc in the server address field o Tap Turn On o Enter Group ID GCCHS121 (Caps matter) and Tap Next Page 5 of 11

6 o Welcome to Airwatch Screen Tap Continue o Enter your school network account and password and Tap Next (Ex. DoorWT) (You may have to drag the screen up a little bit to tap Next or press keyboard icon and select Hide Keyboard ) o Device Ownership Tap on Please Select o Tap Employee Owned and Tap Next Page 6 of 11

7 o Remember sign in info screen Tap Skip o Tap the checkbox next to I Agree to allow apps and services from IT admin o Tap Turn On o Once you see the Get the recommended app at the bottom, you are enrolled in Airwatch. (DO NOT tap Get the recommended app ) o Press the Windows button at the bottom of the tablet to get back to the Metro Start Screen o Shut the machine down by Tapping the Power button on the Metro Screen and Tapping Shut Down Page 7 of 11

8 When you get into school tomorrow morning (You MUST be on the school s Wireless network to perform the next steps) o Log back in by Tapping the left arrow to choose Other user o Log in with your network username and password. o Start at the Metro Screen (press Windows button at bottom of tablet if necessary) o Tap on Word 2013 icon. Word program will open up. o When Activation window pops up click Next then Close when done. o Close Word program. o From Metro Screen search Activate, allow a moment for results to return. o Tap See if Windows is activated. You should see Activation Windows is activated. o Enjoy using your new tablet! Page 8 of 11

9 Tips, Tricks and Things to know about using your Acer ablet and Windows 8.1 Windows 8 Tutorial o This tile is located on Metro screen for online help with using Windows 8.1 Shutting down properly: o Pressing the power button on the side of the tablet only puts it in a sleep mode. To shut the tablet down you should always go to the Metro or Start screen and tap the power button and then tap Shut down. If the Tablet is not responding: o Press and hold the power button on the side of the tablet until it shuts down. This is a Hard Reset. Using USB Powered Devices: o To use any USB device that gets its power through the USB connection, your tablet must be connected to its power adapter and plugged into a power source. The USB port in the device does not have enough power on its own to work some USB devices that draw their power from the USB connection. No LED for CAPS Lock : o Know that there is no LED indicator visually signaling that the CAPS Lock is on anywhere on the Bluetooth keyboard. So if you are logging into a site and the password field does not tell you that your CAPS lock is on, you may possibly lock yourself out. Charging: o When plugging your tablet into power, remember to attach the USB cable to your tablet and keyboard so you will also be charging your Bluetooth keyboard. Getting into this habit will keep your keyboard from dying on you when you really need it. Closing Apps: o If you are in the app itself, you may press and drag from the top center of the screen just under the camera lens to the bottom toward the Windows button and it will close the app you are currently in. What Apps are open? o Slide from off the left of the screen to the right a bit and you will see a list of the apps you have open. o You can then tap on the app you want to go to OR you may drag it out to the bottom of the screen towards the Windows button on the bottom center of the tablet to close the App. Saving documents (IMPORTANT) o Save all files to your network drive at school or a flash drive. If there is an issue with your tablet it will likely be re imaged which will wipe away all files and settings on your tablet. Accepting Microsoft Windows 8.1 Updates o Go to Charms toolbar and select Settings, and then Change PC settings o Select Update and recovery o Select View details and then Install after reviewing the updates you need o Note: As with other devices and apps you may use at home, accept other software updates (e.g. java, Adobe, etc.) when prompted. Screen resolution too small? o From the desktop, Tap and hold on the desktop background and Tap Screen Resolution o Choose 1360 x 768 and Apply o Then in the address bar where it says Control Panel>Appearance and Personalization>Display>Screen Resolution, Tap on Display o Tap the checkbox next to Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays o Tap Larger 150% o Then tap Apply. You ll have to logoff and back on but the display is much easier to read. Page 9 of 11

10 Microsoft Live ID: (Allows you to download apps from the Windows Store) Please be aware that you will receive a SCHOOL Microsoft Live ID before the end of the semester. If you create your own Microsoft Live ID, it will be your PERSONAL Microsoft account. Once you receive your SCHOOL Microsoft Live ID, the apps, pics, settings or any other data and information you are storing in your PERSONAL Microsoft Live ID will need to be removed. It will not be able to be combined with your SCHOOL Microsoft Live ID account. o If your teacher would like you to create an account in order to get an app from the Microsoft App Store, go to in Internet Explorer. (You will need access to your cell phone OR your because Microsoft will send a verification code by text or (your choice) that you will have to enter to finish the account creation. o Enter all info and Click Create Account (You may uncheck the checkbox at the bottom of the page if you don t want a bunch of s from Microsoft cluttering up your inbox) o Choose either text or to receive your verification code o Enter your phone number if you chose text OR enter your if you chose . o Retrieve the code from the text or and enter it o You re Done Page 10 of 11

11 Downloading Microsoft Store apps without linking your Live ID to your tablet: o Start at the Metro Screen (press Windows button at bottom of tablet if necessary) o Select the Store tile o When you click the Install button on the app you wish to install you will see the prompt below. Click Sign into each app separately instead (not recommended) and click Next. This is not recommended by Microsoft because they prefer to have all your devices synching data to their cloud but since the students are not getting Office365 school accounts yet, this does not make sense for their upcoming educational purposes. o Fill in the information for the account you created and click Save : o When prompted to set up a payment method, click Ask me later. Your app will install, if it is free, or will require a payment method which you will need to enter, if desired, with your appropriate information. Page 11 of 11
