1 CareSentinel Set Up Guide for Android Devices Compatible Devices: Only devices running Android 4.3 or newer support Bluetooth Smart. Any smart phone or tablet running an Android operating system older than 4.3 does not have Bluetooth Low Energy support and is incompatible with the CareSentinel system. Click here for a list of approved Android devices Caution: The CareSentinel Android Application only works with the CareSentinel Occupancy Monitor or Personal Safety Monitor. No other devices can be used with the App. Test the range of the Occupancy Monitor or Personal Safety Monitor to determine the range of transmission for your installation prior to leaving the patient unattended. The CareSentinel system utilizes Bluetooth Low Energy technology. Any Android device older than version 4.3 DOES NOT support Bluetooth Low Energy and is incompatible with the CareSentinel system. To ensure that your phone or smart device is compatible with CareSentinel, always ensure that your device has the most recent operating system downloaded. NOT ALL ANDROID DEVICES RUNNING OPERATING SYSTEM 4.3 OR NEWER BEHAVE THE SAME. CHEAPER DEVICES MAY NOT EXPERIENCE THE SAME RANGE OR STABILITY AS TRUSTED PHONES AND TABLETS. Downloading the App 1. Go to the Google Play Store and search CareSentinel 2. Download the CareSentinel App. The icon is a blue lighthouse with a white background, as shown to the right. 3. Once downloaded, the CareSentinel App can be accessed from within the App section of the device or dragged out to the main screen for quicker access. Connecting to New Devices 1

2 1. On the main screen press SCAN FOR DEVICES in the top right corner as shown in Figure 1. After a brief loading period it will bring you to the Scan Devices screen as seen in Figure 2. Figure 2 Figure 1 2. If a sensor is in range, powered on and not connected to by another phone, it will be displayed on this page. From here, you can either register the device, or if the device is not yours, you can ignore it. 3. Selecting register will prompt you to name the device. We suggest naming it something that tells you about the location it is placed such as Mom s Bedroom or Bill s Chair. 4. After naming the device, you will automatically connect to it. To be sure, hit the back arrow in the top left of the screen to go to the Active Monitors screen. Here, the device should display signal strength and battery life left if it is connected. Otherwise, it will simply show a button that says Connect which you can press to finalize the connection. Note: it may take up to 3 minutes to establish the initial connection and load the device information. 5. If the Monitor is discovered but has difficulty connecting even after 3 minutes, refer to troubleshooting problem 2 located on page 6. Device Info Page - Disconnect, Rename, Turn Sensors off, and History functions 2

3 1. From the main screen with devices connected, simply tap the device that you wish to rename/disconnect or see the current info on. This will bring you to a device info page that will have the device name at the top of the page shown in Figure This page contains three buttons along the top of the screen, just above the Sensors bar. a. The red Disconnect button to the far left will disconnect the Occupancy Monitor from phone allowing another device to pick up the Occupancy Monitor and receive notifications. b. The Rename button in the middle will trigger a pop up window that prompts the user to rename the device if they decide to move the Occupancy Monitor or want to select a different name. c. The History button to the far left will bring up a page that lists the past sensor events. The page will contain which sensors were triggered Figure 3 on each occupancy monitor and when. 3. Under the Sensors bar it lists all of the sensors, each containing their own ON/OFF button to the right. If a certain sensor is plugged in but you do not wish to receive notifications regarding that sensor you may press the button to the right of that sensor so that it displays OFF. Receiving Notifications 1. When a sensor is triggered, the main screen will display an orange notification box below the Occupancy Monitor which that sensor was attached to. On the notification, the new sensor state as well as the time triggered will be displayed shown in Figure To dismiss the notification simply tap it and the App will register the event as acknowledged. 3. If not within the app, or if the screen is locked, the user will receive push notifications similar to receiving a text message on the phone. This will be complete with an audible noise and vibration (if those features are enabled on the device). 4. In order to receive push notifications outside of the CareSentinel app, make sure to have notifications and sounds enabled. Figure 4 3

4 Uploading Data to the Cloud IN ORDER TO UPLOAD DATA TO THE CLOUD, YOU MUST BE REGISTERED AS A CLOUD USER. IN ORDER TO BECOME A CLOUD USER, VISIT OUR WEBSITE AND SIGN UP! 1. To upload data to the cloud, first start by making sure you are connected to the Occupancy Monitor or CareCom you wish to upload info for and connected to the internet through Wi-Fi or data. 2. At the top left of the screen, press the arrow that points to the left to bring up a menu. Within the menu press the Upload Devices button circled in Figure Select the Devices you want to upload. Selected Occupancy Monitors and CareComs will have blue checks next to them. 4. Press Upload at the top right corner of the screen shown in Figure If already logged in, your sensor information will be uploaded and stored to the cloud, where it can be viewed on cloud.shopcaresentinel.com Figure 5 6. If you are not logged in, proceed to the following steps for creating an account and logging in. Logging in as a Caregiver 1. Once you press Upload as shown in Figure 6, you will be prompted to log in if you are not already. You will be brought to the login screen shown in Figure If you do not already have an account for the cloud storage service, you can sign up at 3. Once you have created an account, fill in all four fields on the login page. Ensure that you enter the correct client ID that was provided Figure 6 to you after the sign-up process on our website. 4. Press the blue Login button located below the four fields and you will be brought to the screen shown in Figure 8 which has now removed the selected monitors from the available monitors to upload. This means that there is no unsaved data currently on your device and it has all been uploaded to the cloud. You can view the data immediately on the cloud by visiting and logging in. 4

5 5. To return to the monitor page, select the back arrow and then select the Monitors tab. Figure 7 Figure 8 Testing your CareSentinel Occupancy Monitor 1. Once the Occupancy Monitor is connected to the CareSentinel app, plug in one of your sensors. 2. Activate the sensor and watch for a notification in the CareSentinel app. Follow each sensor s specific user manual on proper usage. 3. While not actively in the app, make sure that notifications are turned on for the CareSentinel app, or else you will not receive any notifications when an occupancy or alarm event takes place. 4. Test the range of your Occupancy Monitor by placing it in the location where it will be used and walk around the house and yard. You will get a notification when the iphone loses connection with your Occupancy Monitor. Make sure to avoid these locations while monitoring a patient. 5. The CareSentinel app should pick the signal back up once back in range. If it does not automatically reconnect, press the scan button in the app shown in Figure 2. Troubleshooting Problem 1: Smart phone or tablet does not pick up Occupancy Monitor on device screen Solution: 5

6 1. Check to make sure that the CareSentinel Occupancy Monitor has 2 working AAA batteries correctly installed. 2. Make sure switch on front cover of Occupancy Monitor is in the ON position. 3. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your smart device. 4. Follow steps above to discover the Occupancy Monitor on the CareSentinel smart phone or tablet application. 5. If device is not picked up by smart device, make sure that another device is not picking up the Occupancy Monitor. Each Occupancy Monitor can only be connected to one smart phone or tablet at a time. If device is being seen on another smart device, ignore it on that device and scan again for Occupancy Monitors. 6. If no smart device can find the Occupancy Monitor, check for damages and replace unit. Problem 2: Smart phone sees Occupancy monitor but does not register events on one of the sensors properly. Solution: 1. Check to make sure the sensor is plugged into the correct connector receptacle. The colored tape strip on the wire should match the color on the receptacle that it is being plugged into. 2. Pairing with an Occupancy Monitor may initially take several attempts. If the Occupancy Monitor gets seen then disconnects, attempt to pair with it up to three more times. 3. If possible, test multiple sensors using the same Occupancy monitor. If only one sensor is not registering events, that sensor is defective and needs to be replaced. If no events are being registered by the occupancy monitor, there is an Occupancy Monitor hardware malfunction and the Occupancy Monitor needs to be replaced. Problem 3: Smart phone or tablet does not pick up Personal Safety Monitor on device screen Solution: 1. Check to make sure that the CareSentinel Personal Safety Monitor has a working battery installed correctly as seen in the Personal Safety Monitor User manual. 2. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your smart device. 3. Follow steps above to discover the Personal Safety Monitor on the CareSentinel smart phone or tablet application. 6

7 4. If device is not picked up by smart device, make sure that another device is not picking up the Personal Safety Monitor 5. Each Personal Safety Monitor can only be connected to one smart phone or tablet at a time.
