1 Database Server Installation Guide Version 1.0 March 23 rd 2014 This document covers installing Microsoft SQL Server Express 2008r2 which is used in many different Robsoft applications. Requirements Recommended memory 1Gb (or more) Disk space (during install) around 1Gb Disk space (after install) around 250Mb Windows XP Service Pack 3 (or higher), or Windows 7 (Home or higher). Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 are supported. We do not recommend Windows Vista (any version) or Windows 7 Starter/Netbook Edition Windows 8, Server 2012 are unsupported but should work Versions older than XP Service Pack 3 (Me, Win98, Windows 2000) are explicitly not supported Basic Process You will need to have local administrator access to the computer. The download files SQL Server 2008 Express r2 ( With Management Tools ) will be in the region of 300Mb and may require other bits of Microsoft framework to be downloaded (especivally if running on Windows XP). The install & configure process for the database server is the complicated part of any installation process for Robsoft applications and you should allow minutes to do this.

2 Download, Install & Configure SQL Server 2008 r2 Visit (Update March 2014: SQL Server 2012 is now available at the link above too; you are recommended to find SQL Server Express Edition 2008 R2 With Management Tools and use that but the applications software is compatible with newer versions such as 2012 and the impending 2014 release. Dialogs and responses may be different to the 2008 versions shown below, of course). The content & layout of this page change from time to time but basically you want to download SQL Server 2008 Express Edition R2, with database tools. Which download link you pick will depend on your version of Windows; if you are running a 64bit version of Windows (eg Windows 7 64bit) then you need the 64-bit version. Otherwise you need the 32-bit version (the default). If in doubt, ask for some help! You are going to end up downloading one of the following two files, either SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe (248Mb) (this is the 64 bit version), or SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU.exe (235Mb) (this is the 32 bit version) Once the file has downloaded, close any other programs you are using and run the downloaded program to start the installer. In most cases we are going to be able to go with the default values, but there are some differences so be careful not to rush through all of the options. At various points in the process, the installer may decide you don't have something you need on the computer and offer to go and download it. This is usually service pack and/or.net runtime stuff - you should give the installer permission to download whatever it asks for; all of the files will be coming from Microsoft themselves. If you are using Windows 7 onwards then it s likely that everything will already be installed, on hand, but if you are running Windows XP it is likely that something will need to be updated at some point in the process. 1) Select 'New Installation Of Add Features To An Existing Installation.' 2 of 8

3 2) Accept the license terms. Don't check the 'send data to Microsoft...' box, though. Press Next. 3) On the Feature Selection screen, you will see 4 checkboxes, make sure they're all checked. (Database Engine Services, SQL Server Replication, Management Tools (basic) and SQL Client Connectivity SDK). Press Next. 3 of 8

4 4) On the next screen, make sure that you have 'named instance' selected and the named instance is 'SQLEXPRESS'. This should be the case by default. Press Next. 5) On the 'Service Accounts' tab, click the button 'use same account for all SQL Server Services'. On the box that pops-up, select the network service account. If you put in a normal user's account, or a system one that has lesser privileges, the process won't work. Check the 'Collation' tab, check the collation is 'Latin_General_CI_AS' (the default). If it isn't, change it using the drop-down box on the screen. Now press 'Next'. 4 of 8

5 6) On 'Account Provisioning', chose 'mixed mode' rather than 'windows authentication' (which is the default). In the prompt for the password for the 'sa' account, enter 'Sql4dmin!' (capital S, q, l, 4, d, m, i, n, exclamation mark) which will satisfy Microsoft's rules for a 'strong' password! Press Next. 5 of 8

6 7) Leave the 'Error Reporting' checkbox unselected. Press Next. 8) Now you can begin installing. This may take upwards of 10 minutes on a slower computer. 9) Assuming all went well, you can click on the 'close' button, and then close the installer program itself. 6 of 8

7 10) Go to the Start menu, under Programs, find 'SQL Server 2008 R2', find the 'Configuration Tools' menu and choose 'Configuration Manager'. 11) On the left hand side, click on 'SQL Server Network Configuration'. Below this will appear 'Protocol for SQLExpress'. Over on the right hand side, right-click on the 'TCP/IP' entry and choose 'enabled'. 12) Close the configuration program (you may see a warning about changes not taking effect until the service is restarted), and finally restart the computer. 7 of 8

8 13) When the computer has restarted and settled down, go to the Start menu and fine 'SQL Server 2008 R2' again. This time, pick 'Management Studio'. This may take a few moments to start up, initially. On the login-screen that appears, change the authentication method from 'Windows' to 'SQL Server authentication', enter a username of 'sa' and a password of 'Sql4dmin! '. You should now be able to log into the management studio, and that s the process of installing SQL Server completed. 14) Close the Management Studio program (use the File menu and select Exit) Once the SQL Server software is installed, you can delete the SQLEXPRWT_(etc) file that you downloaded. 8 of 8
