Partnered with stewardship organizations and governments on plastics packaging recycling demonstrations. Met with Health Canada to support harmonization with FDA. Launched Operation Clean Sweep for the Canadian plastics industry.

16 Collection Issues Impacting Municipal Recycling Facilities Improper Preparation for Collection Best Practice: set out bags & wraps in one bag Reality: residents generally set all film and bags out loose in the recycling bin Issues for MRFs: Film becomes tangled with other recyclables in the collection bin & impedes efficient processing Adds to maintenance costs and time

17 Results: Recycling of Plastics Packaging Growing % increase in plastics recycled compared to 2009 Almost 100% increase in film 6% increase in non bottle rigids 14% increase in bottles collected

18 Post Consumer & Commercial Collection 2010 Study PE film Significant increase over 2009 Film and bag reclamation capacity = 50.6 million kilograms in Canada System capacity utilization rate = 37% System can receive a lot more film without additional capital expenditures

19 Programs to Advance Film Collection CPIA Film Recovery Working Group Purpose: To increase the diversion of plastic film from landfills through recycling and recovery Objectives: Expand the collection infrastructure for commercial and consumer film recovery; facilitate a reprocessing film industry in Canada; support recovery options for non-recyclable film plastics
