1 Soccer Classroom Activity The Classroom Activity introduces students to the context of a performance task, so they are not disadvantaged in demonstrating the skills the task intends to assess. Contextual elements include: an understanding of the setting or situation in which the task is placed, potentially unfamiliar concepts that are associated with the scenario, and key terms or vocabulary students will need to understand in order to meaningfully engage with and complete the performance task. The Classroom Activity is also intended to generate student interest in further exploration of the key idea(s). The Classroom Activity should be easy to implement with clear instructions. Please read through the entire Classroom Activity before beginning the activity with students to ensure any classroom preparation can be completed in advance. Resources Needed: Each student should have access to a piece of paper and writing tool 1 Some method of displaying images 2 Whiteboard should be available or some manner of recording student responses Learning Goals: The student will understand the context of the key ideas related to the topic: o Only the winning player/team moves from one round into the next round of a competition o Tournaments need a schedule so all players and teams know when to report for games The student will understand the following vocabulary: o Tournament:: a series of contests in which players compete o Registered players: players officially signed up to compete o Schedule: a list of times for events to begin and end o Round: games within a tournament in which each participant plays one game Definitions are provided here for the convenience of facilitators. Students are expected to understand these key terms as they arise in the context of the task, not to be able to recite the definitions. 1 Students who need an accommodation may use their preferred tool for writing. 2 Instead of displaying Figure 1, the last page of this document can be used as a handout for students.

2 Soccer Classroom Activity [Purpose: The facilitator s goal is to help students understand how a tournament is organized with a schedule.] Facilitator says: Today, we will get ready for the Soccer Performance Task. Facilitator says: To get ready for this task, we are going to discuss competitions. Facilitator says: Can you think of any competitions we have in school? [Allow students to respond. Examples: spelling bee, science fair, board races] Facilitator says: As an example of a competition, we are going to have a short math tournament. Who would like to volunteer to compete? [Select four volunteers.] We also need an official record keeper. This person will record the results during the tournament. [Select one volunteer (optional).] [Facilitator draws or displays Figure 1 Tournament Chart. Student volunteer or teacher writes in the names of the four student competitors.] Figure 1. 3 Facilitator says: You will compete two at a time. I will ask you to solve the same problem. The student who correctly completes the problem first is the winner of the round and will move on to the next round. In the event of a tie, or if competing students do not provide a correct answer, a new problem will be given. Who can describe what a tournament is? [Allow time for student responses. Facilitator can guide students to understand that a tournament is a series of contests in which players compete.] Facilitator says: Who can explain how a tournament is different than a competition? [Allow time for student responses. Facilitator can guide students to understand that a competition is one game or event whereas a tournament is several games or events.] Facilitator says: Our math tournament is similar to tournaments in sports. Have you ever participated in a tournament? [Allow time for student responses.] Most tournaments have multiple teams competing at the same time. Normally in a tournament, only the winning team moves on to the next round. Possible class discussion questions (unscripted): Can you describe how our tournament is similar to a larger tournament? Why do you think only the winning team moves on to the next round? Can you think of how we could expand our tournament so more students could compete? How could we organize the students for a class tournament? [No resolution is needed for these questions. Questions are to increase student interest and to promote discussion regarding the topic.]

4 Facilitator says: Who can describe how the chart helped to organize the tournament? [Allow time for student responses. Sample responses: the chart organized the competitors into pairs to compete, recorded the winner of each round, show names of both competitors.] Facilitator says: Our tournament was short and only had four competitors and two rounds. A larger tournament would need to have a schedule. Who can describe what is included in a schedule? [Allow time for student responses. Make sure students understand that a schedule has specific times for games to begin.] Facilitator says: Today I asked for volunteers for our tournament. In most cases teams or individuals need to register to participate in a tournament. Can you explain what it means for a team or individual to register for a tournament? [Allow time for student responses. Students need to understand that to register means the individual has completed a form or document that includes their names and other information.] Class Discussion Questions (unscripted) Can you think of an activity you register for so you can participate? (Examples: school activities, sports, club activities) [No resolution is needed for these questions. Questions are to increase student interest and to promote discussion regarding the topic.] Facilitator says: Today we held a small math tournament with two rounds and discussed how tournaments are organized. These ideas may help you when you complete your performance task. Facilitator says: Are there any questions? [Allow for student questions.] Facilitator says: You are ready to complete the Soccer Performance Task.
