1 COLOR THEORY & DESIGN SYLLABUS SUMMER 2015 Cole Case Mondays 7-10 PM XGRD unit COURSE DESCRIPTION: An essential course for anyone pursuing a career or currently working in an art or design field who must communicate effectively with color. Confidence and skill are developed through weekly color-mixing exercises and homework projects using gouache paint and/or digital output (Adobe CS/CC). Through lecture, demonstration, critique, and practical experience, students will investigate color mixing, color terminology, and classic color harmonies as well as optical mixing. Prerequisite: None (may be taken concurrently with 2D Design) EDUCATIONAL GOALS: 1. Students will develop the fundamental skills to create and improve artwork or design product by manipulation of media and techniques. 2. Students will develop the fundamental knowledge and skills to express themselves aesthetically and creatively through color. 3. Students will develop the ability to use color in sophisticated problemsolving assignments. 4. Students will develop the ability to recognize and create/manipulate specific color harmonies and contrasts.

2 COURSE GOALS AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES Color Theory & Design By the end of the semester, Color Theory & Design students will acquire the following basic skills: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of basic color theory concepts including: Hue, Value, and Saturation 12 step color wheel (Johannes Itten), color temperature (Warm/Cool) Tint, Tone, Shade (Value Manipulation) Color Harmonies (Analogous Color) Color Contrasts (Complementary Color) Simultaneous Contrast Effects/Color Contextuality (Johannes Itten) Bezold Effect (Josef Albers) Optical Mixing (Georges Seurat and Chuck Close) 2. Demonstrate the ability to discern, control, and apply color through handmixing of gouache paint and digital media where applicable. 3. Refine quality of visual presentation through observation, questioning, self-evaluation, and revision. 4. Participate in critiques relating specific project objectives to completed projects. ATTENDANCE POLICY 1. Over two absences can result in a failing grade for the Course. (Departmental Policy: All absences are considered unexcused.) 2. Students missing the last week of classes risk failing the course. 3. Students are required to make up missed class work and homework. Dept. Policy (and Cole s): Students must turn in ALL projects or will FAIL the course. NO INCOMPLETES. 4. Due to the nature of this course, assignments and due dates may be altered. It is the responsibility of each student to keep up with changes, even if absent. Exchange s and phone numbers with your fellow students.

3 COURSE REQUIREMENTS Students are required to complete 4 projects during the summer semester. Instruction and demonstration will accompany each assigned project. Students will work in class each week, and are expected to complete assigned work at home if necessary. Students are expected to participate in class, meet deadlines and objectives, revise work as necessary, and display a professional demeanor in class. COURSE FORMAT This is a hands-on studio class, which also includes lecture, class discussion, slide presentations, and critique. GRADING CRITERIA In this course, students will be evaluated based on how well they learn and apply the course goals identified above. Students are graded based on a variety of criteria including class projects, participation, homework, and attendance. You must come to class prepared to work each week with all of the needed materials and preparation. 5 ½ inch doublesided (double stick) tape: Finger Lift Pro, 3M/Scotch or Japanese Xacto knife (Gripsters/retractables are best) with #11 blades and blade cover Xacto #11 blade disposal/dispenser box Olfa snapblade utility knife/box cutter for cutting illustration boards Cutting surface Metal ruler at least 24 inches long 1 12x12 inch black mat board 4 15x20 inch cold press illustration boards Pad of watercolor paper, 300 or 90 lb weight, 11x15 inches Flat palette, paper or otherwise (paper preferred) Palette knife with wooden handle Large cup for brush cleaning water (Starbucks/CBTL) Small cups or bowls for clean water (Baja Fresh/Chipotle) Cloth rags or paper towels 3/4 inch 3M/Scotch 811 Removable or Magic tape 1 inch Scotch blue painters tape Pencils: 2B, 4B, 6B Brushes: One 3/4-1 inch wide flat wash brush Acrylic/watercolor flat or round brushes #s 0, 2, 4, 6 No bristle brushes please!
