1 1 Our Mission Information for Parents Curriculum 2015/2016 Our mission is to: provide an excellent education, within a loving, caring community, based on the life and teachings of Christ and traditions of the Church; ensure that each individual, as a reflection of Christ, is enabled to reach his or her full potential; help children to look to Our Lord for guidance and direction in their lives; ensure that the Christian Gospel message supports and sustains everything that happens in the school; ensure that the Catholic Christian faith, which is taught explicitly in the classroom, can take root in the hearts and minds of all our children. Our aims: School Council We aim to grow a school environment that is richly stimulating, where we feel safe and respected. We aim to put in place the building blocks that allow all pupils to reach their full potential. We value differences, where everyone's opinion counts and life-long learners are made. We are hard workers and try our best to learn the ways of the Lord. Also, we aim to extend the solid partnerships that exist between the school, the parents/carers, the community, and others. We always put children s needs first. The Golden Rules Try to follow in Jesus s footsteps, respecting God s creation. Treat your neighbour as you would like to be treated; and always try your hardest. Always be kind to other people and respect them. Everything you say and everything you do matters: always seek to see the good in yourself and everyone else. Let your choices be inspired by kindness and thoughtfulness. Inspiring Success Year 2

Brain Builders (weekly) Talk homework (weekly) Assessment Assessment of all pupils takes place on a continual basis to enable teachers to plan and set work which is appropriate to the needs of the child. Throughout the year, pupils are assessed in the following ways: On-going: regular monitoring and assessment, following the school s marking policy. Every half term: official assessments in Mathematics, English and Science. Every term: past papers, tests or other assessment results are shared with the Local Authority. May 2014: Year 2 national SATS tests (all Year 2 pupils). In the week commencing 16 th June 2014: Year 2 national Phonics tests (re-takes only). Special attention is paid to children s performance and development in Literacy and Numeracy (Reading, Writing, Spelling, Punctuation, Grammar, Handwriting; and Mathematics).

5 5 Writing/ Sentence composition Reading Targets Numeracy Targets Targets for Year 2 Children: could write 2 or 3 sentences to describe the setting or a character s feelings in a story; should use interesting words and phrases found in our class reading to write a story; must begin to use simple verbs correctly in their writing. Children: could explain to a friend which part of the story or poem you think is the funniest/saddest etc and why; use expression when reading a story. should be able to pick out interesting words and tell a friend why it makes you laugh/feel sad etc ; read with understanding. must look out for interesting words in stories and poems (e.g. funny words). Children will know their number bonds up to 20 and above. Children can record both addition and subtraction calculations and solve them. Children will be able to add/subtract two 2-digit numbers without crossing the 10s boundary. Children will be able to multiply a single or a 2-digit number by 1, 10 or 100 and explain the effect. They will know division facts from the 2, 5 and 10- times tables. Children will begin to use a calendar and understand relationships between units of time (eg days, weeks, months, years). Maths Covered in Year 2 Problem-solving Children will learn to solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication or division in contexts of numbers, measures or pounds and pence.
