LAOS Sapa Hanoi Halong Bay WHEN TO GO TO VIETNAM Whilst Vietnam is a tropical country which is typically warm and humid, the weather can vary considerably from region to region. You can visit the North which spreads from Sapa to Hanoi and Halong bay from November to the end of April when the weather is the coolest and the humidity is not too high. The Central Coast through Quy Nhon and Nha Trang is truly a beach paradise during December to June with the warm weather, wonderful sunshine and less rain. The south, the region around Ho Chi Minh city and the Mekong Delta is best visited during its dry season, starting from December and lasting until April. HALONG BAY Situated in the Gulf of Tonkin off of Vietnam s North Eastern Coast, the Halong Bay area has a border spanning 120km, encompassing 1,969 islands and islets of various sizes and shapes. In the hollow hearts of the large islets, there are a number of mysterious grottoes and spectacular caves of limestone formations, including Thien Cung (Heavenly Residence), Dau Go (Driftwood) grottoes and Sung Sot (Surprise) and Tam Cung (Palace) caves. Wonderful, unique and legendary, Halong Bay has been proudly nominated as one of the New Seven Wonders of The World. SAPA Nestled high in the Tonkinese Alps near the Chinese border, Sapa is a picturesque mountainous region offering wonderful views of steeply terraced rice fields, towering verdant ridgelines, ethnic minority villages, raging rivers and astounding waterfalls. The area is also a heaven for superb trekking to nearby hill tribe villages tucked within the terraced rice paddies. HOI AN Known as Faifo to Western traders, from the 17th to 19th centuries, Hoi An, a town oozing charm and history, was one of Southeast Asia s major international ports. In the past Hoi An has been used by the Japanese, Portuguese, Dutch, French and the large remaining Chinese community. Remnants of these past traders influences can still be seen lining the streets of Hoi An and its nine different types of historical sites with an average age of 200 years including private houses, family chapels, community halls, communal houses, temples, pagodas, bridges, wells and tombs. HO CHI MINH CITY Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is a sprawling centre of commerce and the country s biggest city by far. Vibrant and alluring, it is a city of contrasts: traditional and modern, young and old, rich and poor. The city s architecture has been termed tropical Baroque an apt description of the once-grand colonial buildings scattered through the city, now aged and enriched by time. Numerous worthwhile sites within Ho Chi Minh City itself reflect that architecture including the Historical Museum, Reunification Palace, the War Remnants Museum, the General Post Office and City Hall. MEKONG DELTA Mekong Delta, also known as Vietnam s rice basket is a watery landscape of green fields and sleepy villages with canals, rivulets and friendly inhabitants fed by the mighty Mekong River. 8 HANOI & THE SURROUNDINGS HANOI CITY TOUR Full/Half day We start the tour by discovering the wealth of cultural, culinary and historic wonders encased within Hanoi s ancient walls. Visit Tran Quoc Pagoda and the temple of literature, the first University of Vietnam, and on to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and One Pillar Pagoda. After lunch we move to the Museum of Ethnology, which displays a variety of cultural items from Vietnam s numerous ethnic minorities. Finally, we continue to Hoan Kiem Lake, the liquid heart of the city. Walk across the oriental bridge with its striking red paint to visit Ngoc Son temple, home to the preserved body of a hundred year old turtle, then return back to your hotel. NINH BINH LAND OF KING Full day You will be collected from your hotel and commence the drive to Ninh Binh province. You will first visit Hoa Lu, the former capital of Vietnam and home to some of the ancient Northern Emperors, then explore the mysterious ruins that are the remains of the once great Old Palace before cycling along winding paths to Tam Coc passing 12km of idyllic scenery of rice paddies and charming streams. Then step aboard a traditional boat rowed by one of the locals, who will propel you along the velvet ribbon of water serenely wound through the limestone karsts. VIETNAM COOKING CLASS Half day In the morning you will be collected from your hotel and driven to the restaurant where you will be receiving the day s lessons. The first step in your lessons will be to visit a traditional Vietnamese market, a vibrant example of authentic Vietnamese culture. You will be accompanied by the chef, who will guide you as to how to select the best and freshest produce, and to haggle down to the best price. Returning to the restaurant, you prepare your ingredients under the sharp eyes of your instructor. Under the cooks guidance you will craft a delectable Vietnamese meal faithful to the local taste. Once you ve finished comes the best part- the tasting! DUONG LAM VILLAGE Full day Depart your hotel early and drive west of Hanoi to Duong Lam Village, representing a purely traditional side of Hanoi. Many of the houses of Duong Lam are over a hundred years old and the streets are cobbled. Visit MongPhu temple, the only hamlet where the original village entrance has withstood the tests of time. After lunch at an authentic local house with traditional cuisine, continue driving to Mia Pagoda, some 287 statues of all sizes can be seen here. Then, visit Ngo Quyen temple and Phung Hung temple, places dedicated to two national heroes. From here continue back to Hanoi. MAI CHAU ETHNIC JOURNEY - 2 DAYS Mai Chau is the nearest ethnic minority community to Hanoi, and attracts many travelers due to its idyllic scenery and friendly people. Mai Chau earns its place as one of the most picturesque regions of Vietnam s northwest, holding its own against tourist heavyweight of Sapa. The region is covered by rich tropical forest, limestone panoramas, and rice paddies. The sheer splendor of the natural landscape is guaranteed to take your breath away. Day 1: Hanoi - Mai Chau Depart from your hotel bright and early for transfer to Mai Chau. Upon arrival at Lac Village stretch your legs before having lunch at the house of one of the locals. In the Highland Village Adventure Trek you will visit some of the remote villages of the Sapa region, hiking over beaten paths between villages to access some of the most spectacular views the highland area provides. Sapa Hanoi Day 1: Night train to Lao Cai Station Transfer to Hanoi central train station for an overnight train to Lao Cai. Days 2-3: Hike and Homestay From Lao Cai take your transfer to Sapa. Once you arrive in Sapa Town you ll have breakfast at a local restaurant before preparing for your adventure trek into the breathtaking Muong Hoa valley. Have a picnic lunch on the mountainside before continuing to the base of the valley. In the evening there ll be a cooking demonstration from the local people before your overnight in a local house. The next day you rise at dawn and first sneak through the market, already a buzz with activity, then continue to leave the busy town behind. Trek downhill to get to Sin Chai village, where you ll see the tribes people at work dying cloth and tending the fields. Day 4: Hanoi arrival Arrive in Hanoi at around 5h30 in the morning. 15 HUE - HOI AN & THE SURROUNDINGS HUE CITY TOUR Half/Full day Spend the morning in the imposing Imperial Citadel, with its high impenetrable walls of red and black brick. Then it s time to sail along the Perfume River in a traditional wooden boat to visit Thien Mu pagoda. The pagoda grounds consist of a serene bonsai garden while the main building with religious shrines is attended by monks.then be taken to the tombs of two of Hue s most famous emperors, Emperor Minh Mang and Emperor Khai Dinh. Each tomb has unique features that reflect the venerable ruler they house. Then return back to your hotel. HUE DMZ TOUR Full day During the Vietnam-American War, the Ben Hai River was the demarcation line between the warring sides of North and South Vietnam. There was a Demilitarized Zone five km each side from the river, but despite this, the southern area of the DMZ was one of the bloodiest battlefields of the war. Your private tour to the DMZ will take you back to the war sites, including Ben Hai River, Hien Luong Bridge, Vinh Moc Tunnel, Khe Sanh Battle Ground, the Ho Chi Minh Trail, Dong Ha Town and Rock Pile.
