President s Perspective Welcome to our latest edition of Oranability. The new financial year brings new beginnings following the hard work put in by managers and supervisors preparing budgets and business plans over the past few months. At the end of June, the Orana Board approved the new 12/13 Budget to include investment in buildings, plant and equipment, computers and software, and also in improving operational conditions for staff, employees and residents. Over the coming months, these investments will be implemented and will contribute to increasing Mile End Office Furniture Enclave Orana undertakes work for a number of South Australian businesses at our Employment Service branches. What you might not know is that Orana also provides work crews that work inside other organisations sites. These work crews are known as Enclaves. Orana Enclaves include a supervisor and a small team of Orana employees who work alongside mainstream employees undertaking specific tasks. One of Orana s Enclaves is located at Mile End Office Furniture and has been in operation since October 2008 under the direction of supervisor John Galdes. The Mile End Office Furniture Enclave was originally hired to unload shipping containers and assemble filing cabinets, however the team of four employees have since moved on to assembling a large variety of steel cabinets as well as a sizeable range of timber school furniture. This versatility has enabled the team to remain constantly busy. Merilyn, General Manager of Mile End Office Furniture, says I am very proud of these men. They do a fantastic job and obviously enjoy their work. We are very happy to have them as part of our team. The team comprises of Damien Rak, Jonathon Godfrey, David Roach and Gregory Hamilton, along efficiency, driving growth and expanding our services, and in doing so, we will be securing Orana s future as a leading service provider in the disability sector. A big thank you goes to all who donated to our end of financial year tax appeal. As highlighted in the last newsletter, all fundraising efforts this year are geared towards the purchase of a Respite Centre on the Fleurieu Peninsula and we hope to make an announcement regarding this project very soon. While the location of trial site and specific details about service content and implementation has yet to be announced, Orana is proud to endorse the new National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). There are many South Australian families who have children with a disability and they face ongoing challenges. For the families of the children located within the trial site, I am sure any additional assistance will be appreciated and Orana will be looking at ways in which it can get involved in the future. We have nearly 50 new staff members to welcome to the team in this edition. There are new accommodation support workers at Amaroo, Loxton and Berri, Harrow House and Whyalla and new supervisors at Loxton, Murray Bridge and Meningie. In our employment services, there are more staff at Murray Bridge and Netley, plus we have two new employment services managers, with supervisor John Galdes. They take pride in meeting their targets and improving the service they re supplying as often as possible. When Damien Rak first started he would only sweep the floors and clean up while the remainder of the team assembled furniture items, but with John s guidance and Damien s hard work and focus he has now learnt new skills that enable him to assemble furniture. Orana s Enclaves are testament to Orana s commitment to provide meaningful work to people with a disability. Robert Simpson at Meningie and Phillip Warner at Loxton. Cathy Beaton also joins us as Regional Business Development Manager. In addition, I d like to welcome Mr Chris Stathy OAM, Managing Director of Philmac Pty Ltd to the Orana Board. Philmac is an Award winning Adelaide based manufacturing company specialising in the manufacture and supply of pipe and irrigation fittings and Chris brings with him a wealth of experience from this sector. We are very much looking forward to working with him, and all our new staff over the coming months. Orana receives support in a myriad of ways and I d like to thank all those who support us through volunteer activities or in a financial or sponsorship role. On the business front, Orana continues to go from strength to strength and remain competitive in today s difficult economic climate. This was highlighted by one of our contractors who informed Orana that we are their number one supplier (out of 30) with 100 per cent compliance and quality rating. You can t get better than that! Congratulations Orana Netley for this great achievement. Bill Filmer AM President President@orana.asn.au These work options assist employees to learn new skills, socialise as part of a wider team and learn life skills that are not only helping the individual but are also assisting South Australian businesses. To find out more about Orana s enclaves and work crews and how they can help your business, please contact Orana s Business Development Manager, Tony Benson on (08) Employees Gregory Hamilton, Damien Rak, Jonathon Godfrey and David Roach with Supervisor John Galdes. 2

Working together on the Lower Lakes Orana employees met the Minister for Sustainability, Environment and Conservation The Hon Paul Caica when he visited the Meningie foreshore to see the work being carried out as part of the Coorong and Lower Lakes Vegetation Program. Orana Meningie has been heavily involved in this project after winning the contract to propagate over 120,000 plants for this phase of the program. It has also been contracted to plant 10,000 plants and Orana Murray Bridge has been contracted to plant 43,600 plants. Orana Meningie has completed its 10,000 plants and employees have been helping out their Murray Bridge colleagues by planting an additional 5,000 plants over the past few weeks. Anthony Brown, Supervisor at Orana Meningie, said the contract has been a great opportunity for both Orana Meningie and Orana Murray Bridge, providing employees varied and challenging opportunities. Orana employees Roger and Bob on the Meningie foreshore. Orana Ambassador John Swan nominated for Award We were really pleased to hear our Ambassador John Swan has been nominated for a Pride of Australia award. John has given an enormous amount of his time, promoting Orana and performing for employees; he has even dedicated the song Have a little faith to Orana. At his recent visit in June, Orana Netley employees had a wonderful time, dancing, playing air guitar, air keyboards and air drums and one employee even did a spot of break dancing. We truly hope John receives an award as he has brought a lot of joy into Orana and we really appreciate the work he does for us. If you want see John Swan in action, take a look at Channel 10 s film clip: com.au/ /barnseys-bro-sings-tosoothe?area=videohighlights1 As a new supervisor, I am excited to be involved in this project and I am looking forward to watching the lake front environment change in the coming years as the plants progress, he said. Orana employee Nick Mather said he liked getting his hands dirty and working outside. It was also good to meet new people such as the Site Managers and others involved in the planting, he said. Another Orana employee involved in the project, Jamie Wilson also liked the social side and added. It was a great atmosphere as we were planting in the main street of Meningie, by the lake. There are 28 community groups involved in the community revegetation project this year, said Samantha Blight, Local Action Plan Implementation Officer, Coorong & Tatiara Local Action Plan. Orana Murray Bridge and Meningie have done an excellent job and have contributed significantly to restoring the health of the lower lakes environment. Orana employee Jamie hard at work. Orana CEO Nick Mihalaras and John Swan at Orana s 60th Celebration. The Orana stand at the DIRC Disability Expo was very popular Disability and Ageing Expo On Friday 17 August, Orana participated in the Annual DIRC Disability and Ageing Expo. The expo provides people with the opportunity to see and talk to various service providers in the disability sector. The Orana stand proved to be popular, with in excess of 300 people filing through and receiving information on Orana. As a follow up to this expo Orana will be holding an Open Day on Tuesday 4 September between 10am 2pm at our Wingfield Employment Service, located at 5 Lafitte Road, Wingfield. The Orana Open Day will provide anyone interested in joining Orana the chance to see the jobs we have available and speak to staff at Orana about the opportunities we have. It s also a great chance to meet the employees at Wingfield and see Orana in action. For further information about the Orana Open Day, please contact the Client Development Centre on Banking on chair donations Orana extends a big thank you to Bank SA for their recent donation of office chairs for Orana s Employment Services. In many of our work sites employees use office chairs which can be adjusted in height to ensure comfort and safety whilst they undertake work for Orana s customers they are a vital piece of equipment for Orana. These chairs will be used at both the Murray Bridge and Meningie employment services. Thanks again to Bank SA for their generous contribution. 3

Orana Employee and Resident Awards Awards for Third Quarter 2012 Congratulations to Annie Williamson for being nominated and winning the Employee of the Quarter Award. Annie is located at the Netley Employment Service where she finds great enjoyment in working to improve her skills. Recently Annie has shown improvement in her attitude towards work and now adopts a team leader role when required. She shows excellent attention to detail and enjoys celebrating the success of others, and is often the one to motivate her co-workers to accomplish their achievements. Further congratulations go to Mark Bond, resident from Port Pirie, for being nominated and winning Resident of the Quarter Award. After experiencing some health challenges recently Mark has managed to remain extremely positive and is back on track for a happy, healthy and long life. Orana acknowledges the hard work of all its employees and residents. Each winner receives a framed Certificate of Achievement and letter of congratulations from the CEO, along with a small monetary prize. Orana Green renews another contract, again! A great way to end the 2011/12 financial year was with the news that the Prospect Council has renewed their contract with Orana Green for the Home and Community Care (HACC) program for a further three years. The HACC contract sees Orana Green at work in and around people s homes, performing gardening and maintenance tasks for those unable to take care of these things themselves, doing everything from changing light bulbs and smoke alarm batteries, to cutting lawns, pruning, weeding and cleaning gutters. This service enhances the quality of life of many and prevents injuries where the elderly and frail might attempt to do one of these jobs themselves. Here at Orana we value the importance people place on being able to remain in their own homes for as long as possible, and the HACC program is one that allows many to do so. Further to this work Ray Burnett, Jared Burnett and the Orana Green teams look after various precincts/zones within Prospect Council, including the Prospect Road Precinct and other roadside landscaping, beautifying and maintaining community parks and gardens within the council boundaries, and looking after Prospect Oval. Ray says, We began in May 2010 so we have reached this level in a very short time. I believe the main reason for the success of this partnership has been the gradual building of mutual trust resulting in close relationships between the key people at The City of Prospect Council and Orana. Congratulations to Orana Green for this contract extension and recognition of their hard work. Employee Anthony Osborne and Supervisor Jared Burnett enjoy getting their hands dirty as part of Orana Green....and another! It is with great pleasure that we can announce that further to the Prospect Council renewal Orana Green contracts have also been renewed and secured in the Walkerville and Tea Tree Gully Council regions. Undergoing mostly HACC work Orana Green has worked tirelessly to ensure that this work would become an ongoing income stream for Orana. Congratulations to the team on acknowledgement of a hard job well done. Back to school for Orana s Managers Annie Williamson, Employee of the Quarter. Mark Bond, Resident of the Quarter. Orana prides itself on the development of its residents and employees. To ensure Orana continues to be a leader in the disability sector a number of Orana s managers have returned to the classroom recently to complete a Diploma of Business Management coordinated by training provider Navitas. So far the course has been completed by three Employment Service Managers: John Gibson, Manager Ridleyton Employment Service Leanne Brakenridge, Manager Port Pirie Employment Service David Ling, Manager Mount Gambier Employment Service. The comprehensive Diploma Course is a mix of classroom learning, practical assignments and project based studies. It has provided these Managers with theory as well as hands on experience that will assist managers with the day to day running of their sites. The course covered topics including Project Management, Continuous Improvements, Managing People s Performance, Customer Satisfaction and Creating Team Effectiveness. Over the coming twelve months, more Orana Managers will complete this training module. 4

Winter dinner party with a twist Our Ambassador and MasterChef 2011 runner up Michael Weldon spiced up some traditional dishes for his winter dinner party cooking class. Participants were treated to pumpkin soup with chorizo followed by a sensational chicken with tomato, capers and chorizo. Michael also tried out a new dessert recipe in this class, I ve never done this before so I m using you as guinea pigs, he said as he made the simply delicious Coopers Dark Ale Brownie with popcorn covered in caramel and wiz fizz sherbet and pine nuts with ice cream. I thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful of Michael Weldon s cooking class, a really fun night where we learnt a lot. Of course the highlight was the Coopers Dark Ale chocolate brownies chocolate is good but it s better with beer! Rachel Cooper- Casserly, Brand Marketing Coordinator, Coopers Brewery Ltd. Sponsors of this class were AAY s Herbs, Bickfords, Coopers, Feast! Fine Foods, Gaganis Bros, House of Organics, Primo Estate, Talinga Grove and Wirra Wirra. Loxton Accommodation Manager awarded Congratulations to our Loxton Accommodation Manager Sandy Smith who recently received a 2012 Loxton Rotary Club MADEC Pride of Workmanship Award in recognition of the high standard of service she gives to the district. Sandy, who was nominated by both Orana staff and residents, was delighted to receive the Award. I am very honoured to receive this award, but I have a great team working with me, so this award is as much about them as it is about me, she said. Tim Taylor, Accommodation Operations Manager, said, This is testimony not just to Sandy s work but also to her leadership skills. We know our staff work extremely hard, so it is very encouraging they are recognised in the locality for the work they do. Congratulations Sandy! Michael Weldon share his tips with the class and some of the delicious dishes. Photographs by Ari Kemppainen. Port Pirie thanks the Community Recently Orana s Port Pirie Accommodation Service hosted a party to thank the community for their input and support - an idea that came about after a residents meeting. Orana, in collaboration with local volunteer organisations and other service providers staff, joined with the residents, their families and carers to celebrate partnerships, and the hard work of many. This event not only provided an opportunity for Orana to thank the local community, it also forged new friendships and created opportunities for long term regional partnerships. On the night Neville Stax Kerr was presented with a Long Service Award. He spoke eloquently of the important part that the Port Pirie Orana community plays in his life. Neville has been a staff member of Orana s for 10 years and provides daily support to accommodation residents, while also seeking new opportunities for people with a disability and being a huge advocate for Orana within the local community. Wayne Lethbridge, Port Pirie Accommodation Service s Manager, said, It was a fantastic night; new friendships were made and partnerships built. Since Wayne s promotion to manager approximately 18 months ago he has worked tirelessly on building relationships with other disability service providers in the region. Together they have developed a fantastic program which sees residents from a number of accommodation services coming together for social and recreational activities, allowing a broader range of activities to be provided and new opportunities for people with a disability to connect with others in the community. Pictured from left to right, Mingay Reichstein, Jenny McCleary, Sandy Smith, Heather Schulz, Dianne Degenhardt. $10,000 from the Abruzzese Association Orana would like to thank the Abruzzese Association of South Australia for choosing Orana as its beneficiary charity for the proceeds of its annual fundraising dinner. Held on Saturday 23 June we were astounded when Orana President, Mr Bill Filmer was presented with a $10,000 cheque at the end of the night and we would like to thank all who attended the event for their generosity. It was a really fun night with beautiful food, friendly people and a lively band. This money will be going towards the vehicle that will need to be purchased for our new Holiday Home/ Respite Centre on the Fleurieu Peninsula. 6 Power pay a visit Whyalla Respite Services take a break Five staff and 16 clients from Whyalla Respite Services enjoyed a weekend away in Melrose in June. Staying at the Melrose Bunk House at the local caravan park, staff and clients alike had great fun exploring the local area and taking advantage of the local facilities. Activities included a drive to Booleroo, morning tea at Wirrabara, lunch at Stone Hut, a game of pool at the local pub in Melrose, tennis at the local tennis courts and walks along the bridge and creek. I d never been to Melrose before and it was really fun staying in the bunk house with everyone, said Orana client Steven Martin. My favourite bit was playing tennis and seeing the creek flowing. Penny, Fiona, Steven and Lee at Melrose and above Whyalla Respite Services about to embark on their holiday. The staff at Melrose Caravan Park were brilliant with our group and really helped make our stay enjoyable, said Monica Fernandez, Manager, Whyalla Respite Services. It was really good for both staff and clients to get away for the weekend and we re planning another similar weekend away next year. Netley Employment Services were treated to a visit from Port Power in July. After a tour of Netley, Russell Ebert, Tom Jonas and Danny Butcher delighted employees by signing high viz jackets, flags and footballs, as well as posing for numerous photographs. Russell said he is always keen to get players out and about and it s great to have their visits openly appreciated. The conversation in the car on the way back was about how great it was to see so many happy faces at work, he said. Once again the visit brought home to our players and myself how we are so privileged to be able to do what we do each day, and also how good it was that everyone at Orana really looked, and openly demonstrated, that they have confidence and good self esteem through their work at Orana. Thank you Russell, Tom and Danny for generously giving us your time and making the morning so memorable for our employees. From Left to right, back row: Danny Butcher, Tom Jonas and Russell Ebert. 7 18 years of volunteer work with Orana Photographs by John Kruger Rocco, Susie Wong, Franka, Francis Wong (Orana Board Director). Just like Mama used to make. Our Modern Italian cooking school with My Kitchen Rules runners up 2012 Nic and Rocco, became the Franka and Rocco cooking school; unfortunately due to illness Nick was unable to attend so Franka, Rocco s mum, stepped in! Participants were treated to a fantastic range of Italian cooking techniques as they were shown how to make: Potato String Prawns & Scallop and Chorizo Stack, Porcini Risotto with Arancini, Herb Printed Ravioli with Sage Butter Sauce and Fried & Baked Profiteroles with Italian Custard. Out and about in Mt Gambier It was really interesting to learn how to handmake authentic Italian ravioli, said cooking school attendee, Narelle Jeffery. Rocco gave some really good advice on how simple things can be added to give your food an Italian flavour. Thank you to Franka for stepping in at the last minute and also the following sponsors of this school: AAY s, Bickfords, Coopers, Fruitalicious, Feast! Fine Foods, Gaganis Bros, M & J Chickens, Woodside Cheese Wrights, Talinga Grove and Wirra Wirra. I love it is quite simply the reason why volunteer Phil Murphy gives his time to help out at the Orana Wingfield site. After a lower back operation in the early 1990 s Phil had to stop working, however he was still keen to fill his time doing something worthwhile. His daughter Cassandra was working at Orana, so Phil went along to see if he could help out and he soon became a regular volunteer at the site. Nearly 20 years later, he s still with us! The supervisors get me to keep an eye on things and I generally help out with what needs doing on the day. I can turn my hand to most things, says Phil. But I mainly help out with the shrink wrapping. Phil used to volunteer five days a week, but now comes in on the three days a week Cassandra works. We are extremely grateful for the huge number of hours Phil has put into Orana over the years, says Andrew Roberts, Acting Wingfield Manager. He is great with the employees, is really enthusiastic and he really can turn his hand to anything. Phil is a real asset to this site and we are extremely lucky to have had him with us for so long. Thank you Phil for your help and dedication. Orana appreciates the work done by all our volunteers and thanks them for their time and commitment. Rowena Dickson, Orana s Client Services Coordinator, was kept busy on Orana s stand at the recent DIRC Disability & Ageing Expo, Mt. Gambier. We were promoting all of Orana s services in the area: recruitment for people with a disability, volunteering & business development, she said. The Expo was well attended by a wide range of service providers giving people in the area a good overview of what is available to them, she added. Our thanks go to all who helped man the stand. The stand looked great and definitely stood out from the crowd! From left to right: Deborah Lee (employee), Katherine Joppich (employee), Rowena Dickson, Vincent Tucker (employee) and Hien Ling. Phil hard at work at Wingfield. Murray Bridge achieves 100% Every Australian Disability Enterprise (ADE) must demonstrate through government audits that it meets their funding agreement conditions in order to obtain compliance and receive funding from Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA). Orana has always prided itself on its high standards, so we were delighted to achieve 100% compliance in the recent DFaHCSIA Murray Bridge Employment Service Audit. In this audit, DFaHCSIA cross-reference files at admin, with attendance records and payroll against the government database which client services case manage. They check for: timeliness, accurateness and completeness, paying particular attention to Disability Maintenance Instruments (DMIs). We only find out the day before which files will be audited and DFaHCSIA select a cross section of current employees, employees whose funding is suspended and former employees. A big thank you to all concerned for helping Orana achieve this very positive outcome. Well done! 7

Photographs by John Kruger Gardening School Helping everyone get their gardens into shape for next year, Kim Syrus hosted our Winter Roses and Winter Herbs Gardening School at Corporate Roses, Myponga. The presenter of Channel 9 s The Garden Gurus showed attendees how to prune different types of rose bushes and then it was time for hands on experience. Kim had lots of bushes for our participants to practice their new found skills on. June Taylor, FIVEaa Herb Specialist, also gave some valuable tips on winter herbs and lots of information about the goodness and importance of herbs in our lives. Our thanks go to Kim and June for sharing their vast knowledge and experience with us. We really appreciate you presenting at these events. The great pasta challenge Chef Adam Swanson, owner of Zucca Greek Mezze in Glenelg, said you can have delicious food by keeping it simple, at his Greek vs Italian Pasta Challenge Cooking School. Held in June at the Central Markets Kitchen, Adam cooked three sensational dishes: Pasta Forno, Pasticcio with Lamb Mince and Kataifi Prawns with Chickpea Salsa. A wonderful evening of food stories, new flavours and tips for the everyday home cook s repertoire, said participant Rebecca Coombs, Marketing Manager for our sponsor Wirra Wirra. Adam was an engaging presenter and the class was a great opportunity to share ideas with other participants. Milestones achieved at Port Augusta Orana CEO Nick Mihalaras was delighted to present Orana staff and employees at Port Augusta with their Years of Service Awards. Orana employee Maureen Cross has worked in the retail part of Orana Port Augusta and was awarded 30-years of service. Meanwhile, Mark Shillabeer who is out and about with our work crews, was recognised for 15-years of service. Nick was also delighted to give Orana Port Augusta Manager Participants at the winter roses gardening school. Dennis Cartwright his 5-years of service award. We are extremely fortunate to have such dedicated individuals working for Orana, said Nick. On behalf of Orana, I d like to thank them for all their hard work and the contributions they have made to Orana Port Augusta. Left: Nick presents Maureen with her 30-years of service award.
