1 Kinect Interface to Play Computer Games with Movement Program Install and Hardware Setup Needed hardware and software to use the Kinect to play computer games. Hardware: Computer running Windows 7 or 8 Kinect Sensor Power cable - couple of options from different locations below. only available instore: 360/ Software: Drivers Two options, PrimeSense or Microsoft SDK These handouts will focus around the Microsoft SDK, which drivers are installed will be important to know when starting the program. Microsoft drivers can be found at: FAAST program Can be found at: Possible Additional Program Needed If you get an error message on install, the following program should fix it. ***Before plugging in the Kinect to the computer you need to install the drivers.*** Download the Kinect SDK (drivers) Click the purple download button and save to your computer. Run the installer. This will install background programs that are needed for FAAST to run. You will only have to do this step once during setup. It will not install a program that you have to open, but if you ever need to uninstall you will be able to from the control panel.

2 Download FAAST (Flexible Action Articulated Skeleton Toolkit) Save this somewhere easily accessible as this is what will be opened when using the setup. It is also a good idea to have this within a folder. Game controls can be saved once set up for ease in bringing them up for next session. Keeping all of these in one place will make it faster to find for repeat sessions. Hardware Set Up 1. Plug in the adaptor cord to a power source. This is needed as the Kinect can not get enough power from the USB port alone Plug in the Kinect Sensor to the orange colored plug (will be the one it fits into). 3. Plug the USB into the computer. Congratulations! You are now ready to open FAAST and begin using the program. Please continue to next pages for setup and use of the program.

3 Kinect Interface to Play Computer Games with Movement FAAST Setup and Use When first opened the screen to the right will be the first seen. Two steps need to be taken before the software will begin to work. 1. Set the Tracker to equal: Microsoft 2. Click the Connect button. At this point the black box at the top of the screen should begin to show a black and grey image of what the Kinect cameras are seeing. As people move about within this viewing area the software will attempt to identify them. As they are identified the person s image will change to a color and a red stick person outline will be visible over the image of the person. Once this has happened the software is now tracking the person and will use those stick figure movements to activate controls set up in following steps. Switch to the Gestures tab to add controls. Click the New Gesture button and name control whatever you would like to, generally something about what the gesture of the command to know what you want that control to do when editing.

4 INPUT CONTROLS After the gesture has been added highlight the input command and click the add button. Options Include: Body - leans and twists. Position - body part in relation to another body part. Angular - Angle of elbow or knee joint. Velocity - velocity of movement Time - Add in a time limit for an action. Each of these constraints has specific parameters that are set with drop down menus to select options for that option. See examples below.

5 OUTPUT CONTROLS After the gesture has been added highlight the output command and click the add button. Keyboard Typing on the keyboard. Type Mouse Button Left Right and Center clicks or holds. Mouse Move In an x,y coordinate pattern. The others are more technical and will most likely not used. Each of these constraints have specific parameters that are set with drop down menus to select options for that option. See examples below.

6 The biggest thing for set up is determining the controls for the game and deciding what movements you want the client to work on. By setting up these basics small edits will be quick when the client is there. When controls are set to client needs, click save. This will save the current parameters for quick recall at a future session or when switching between games. To recall previously saved settings click load and navigate to where you have saved the settings. Edits are done by highlighting the control to be changed and clicking edit. This will bring up the dialog menu again where changes can be made quickly, such an increasing or decreasing an angle or distance to account for changes in the client s ability that day. For higher functioning clients multistep controls can be set where two movements need to be done simultaneously or with a time constraints added a chain of movements can be done.
