1 Smart Console Technical Document /04/07 SMART CONSOLE Software and Firmware Upgrade Procedure Overview Professional and Elite Series This document describes the process of upgrading both the software and firmware on Smart Consoles. You will need a USB memory stick. For this procedure to work correctly you MUST be running software or later and console firmware or later. If you are running older software, please upgrade to version first, available from: If your console is connected to a LAN as opposed to directly to your Engine, you may choose to set up a remote drive location. This allows you to download software and firmware to this location and then import and install these onto the console without the need for physically transferring them via USB memory stick. If you wish to do this please follow the Remote Network drive mapping instructions at the end of this document before following the upgrade procedure below. Upgrade Procedure Download the individual Zip files for each engine you wish to upgrade for. These are complete version of Smart Console software, and you may choose, from the console itself which version you run at any time. Thus it is ideal to select the current versions for all engines as well as the firmware. Also download the firmware file (which will have a.bin suffix. Once downloaded, copy both the firmware.bin and software zip files onto the root directory of a USB memory stick or your Remote Network Folder. Ensure the console is running normally. o Insert the USB stick into the (Iggy) rack PC (unless using a remote network drive). o Insert the USB stick into any USB port on the back of the console (unless using a remote network drive).

2 Press the System button near the top of the Active Panel. Touch the Onscreen button Versions. Touch the onscreen button Import. The console will now display the number of version available to import from the USB memory stick or remote network drive. Touch the confirm button on the bottom right of the screen. Once the import operation is complete you will now see a list of all the available versions of software on your console. Use either the Active Encoder or the Active Knob to move the cursor up and down the list of available versions. In each case, when the cursor is pointing to an available version of software, the light grey bar in the top of the screen shows the currently installed version for that particular engine. In this way you can see whether the software you are about to install is older or newer than the version the cursor is currently pointing at. Once you have selected the version of software you wish to install touch the Install button and then confirm by touching the Proceed button. Once you have installed a new version of software, you may now repeat the process for any other engines you wish to upgrade for. You must now restart the application in order to actually run the new version of software you have installed. Touch Exit to return to the main System page, and then touch Engines. Touch the Restart button and the console will now shut down the application and restart with the new version of software you have just upgraded to. Congratulations you have just upgraded your Smart Consoles Software. FIRMWARE: Press the System button near the top of the Active Panel. Touch the Onscreen button Firmware. Touch the onscreen button Import. The console will now display the number of version available to import from the USB memory stick or remote network drive. Touch the confirm button on the bottom right of the screen. Once the import operation is complete you will now see a list of all the available versions of firmware on your console. Use either the Active Encoder or the Active Knob to move the cursor up and down the list of available versions to the one you wish to install. Touch the Install button and then confirm by touching the Overwrite button. (Update only installs firmware on panels that are out of date resulting in a potentially shorter programming time for those panels running the correct firmware, however, if you have never used the new version of firmware before please use Overwrite). Press Confirm. You will see a warning appear about the duration of this operation. Now would be a good time to flick through some Smart Console documentation, or, alternatively, go make yourself a nice cup of tea. 3 Once the upgrade operation is complete you will be asked to confirm and you must now power cycle your console. If necessary remove the USB memory stick. (There is no need to follow the usual Safely Remove Hardware procedure). Congratulations you have just upgraded your Smart Consoles Firmware. REMOTE NETWORK DRIVE MAPPING It is also possible to import software directly from a remote network location, allowing you to download software, place it in this folder and then install it, doing away with the need for a USB memory stick and sneakernet. For this scenario to work the Console must be on a local area network which you can access from another computer. If this is not the case and you connect directly to your engine from the console please use the USB memory stick based instructions above. Shut down your console and then go to the Console Rack PC (also known as the Iggy PC). Go to the back of the rack and unscrew the grey dongle from the back of the black converter plugged into the second video output of the video card. Plug a PC monitor into the Adaptor where the grey dongle was hanging off the second video output of the Video card. Plug a PC Keyboard and Mouse into the Rack PC. Turn the Rack PC on using the black switch on the front of the rack behind the faceplate. The console should now run up as per normal and you should now have a working monitor, keyboard, and mouse and access to the windows system on the Iggy PC. Plug a USB keyboard and mouse into any two USB connectors on the back of the console. Wait a minute or so for Windows to install the appropriate drivers for your keyboard and mouse. Hit Alt-Tab on your keyboard once to change focus to the Iggy Application. This and the next steps are time dependant, you have between 5-10 seconds to carry them out so perhaps read them first so you are ready for the tasks. Hit Alt-X to kill the application and then use the mouse to click on OK. (note The cursor will not be visible on screen until it is over the dialog box it may also be a little difficult to see since the cursor itself is quite a fine crosshair type icon). Once the application exits, you now have a few seconds to press Alt-Tab again which will display the Console Monitor Application and then click on the checkbox labelled Auto Start Console to remove the tick. This will prevent the console monitor application from starting up the Iggy application automatically every 10 seconds. Smart Tech Doc 114 Firmware Upgrade Page 3

4 Click on the checkbox labelled Hide Taskbar. You now have a windows system with which you can follow the steps below to set up Remote networking (or indeed any other maintenance tasks). FOR ALL CONSOLES Note: This process assumes that you are logged onto the Iggy PC as the default user and have all the appropriate rights to access your network. Step 1. Open My Network Places Step 2. Browse to the remote network folder you would like the console to look for new versions of software and firmware. For example \\Server\ConsoleSoft. Step 3. Select Tools->Map Network Drive Step 4. Choose a drive letter from the drop down box. For example I: Step 5: Browse to the remote network folder (note: This could be a shared network folder on the Iggy PC itself if you like!). Step 6. Ensure the Reconnect at Logon checkbox is selected. Step 7. Click on Finish to create the mapped drive. Step 8. Close any open explorer windows. Step 9. Open My Computer Step 10. Right Click on the newly created Mapped Network Drive and select Create Shortcut Step 11. You will get the message Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead? Select YES. Step 12. Close any open explorer windows. Step 13. Click and HOLD the mouse on the newly created mapped network drive shortcut and DRAG it to Start->All Programs->Startup. This will place the shortcut into the Startup directory making it run automatically on startup. Step 14. Right click on the mapped network drive shortcut in the Start->All Programs- >Startup folder and select Properties. Step 15. In the Shortcut TAB, Change the Run: Option from Normal Window to Minimized. Step 16. Click Apply and Click OK. Remove the monitor keyboard and mouse and (IMPORTANT!) replace the grey dongle onto the back of the black DVI converter at the back of the rack. NEVER Boot the Smart Console without either the DVI dongle OR a monitor plugged into the DVI converter on the Iggy Rack PC! You should now be able to use your Smart Console as per normal. Click on the two checkboxes in the Console Monitor application to turn Auto Start Console and Hide Taskbar back on. Once the console application starts again you may see the console monitor Application over the top of the usual Console Active Screen display. If this is the case press Alt-Tab on the keyboard once. 5 normal system operation, you may choose to shut down, and then restart the console. Remove the keyboard and mouse from the console. (There is no need to follow the usual Safely Remove Hardware procedure). You are now ready to install software and firmware from a remote network location. Refer to the Version and Firmware pages for instructions on installing new software versions and firmware from within the Smart Console.
