1 RC7 & RC7GS Remote Control Bulk Charging Introducing e RC7 & RC7GS Remote Control The RC7 and RC7GS (Generator Start) enable you to remotely control any RV and Legend Series II inverter/charger rated from 2000 to 3000 watts and equipped wi an RJ11 remote control jack. The inverter must have software version 1.10 or better (upgrades are available). These remote control devices feature inverter On/Off control, meters, error messages, and informative displays so at you can optimize e performance of your inverter/charger. Note: Throughout is booklet, all features described are available on bo e RC7 and e RC7GS, unless specified oerwise. Generator control features apply to e RC7GS only. Arlington, WA USA Page 1
2 On/Off Control The inverter portion of your RV or Legend Series II inverter/charger can be turned Off or On using e remote control. The standby charger in your inverter/charger system is automatic always ready and available for charging whenever AC power is available. Meters The RC7(GS) remote features several meters at enable you to monitor operating conditions of your power center. These meters include Average Shunt Amps, Battery Voltage, Inverter-Charger Current, AC Input Voltage, AC Output Voltage, AC Input Amps (GS only), Pass Through Amps (RC7 only), Battery Temperature, Transformer Temperature, FET Temperature, and Estimated Battery Capacity, as well as Battery State of Charge, Time Left to Run, and Time Left to Charge. Controls The RC7 & RC7GS remotes enable you to turn your inverter On or Off at e push of a button on e faceplate. You can use e RC7 to configure e inverter/charger to your specific system and preferences including battery capacity, battery type, charger rate, low battery cutoff, AC voltage dropout, shore power amps, external shunt, fuelgauge cutout and display contrast. In addition, e RC7GS enables you to start and/or stop your genset automatically or manually, specify generator make and model, and set a quiet time during which e genset will not start automatically. Status Monitoring These remotes monitor operating conditions including AC supply, inverter operation, charger operation, battery condition and generator condition (GS only). Installation 1. Select an appropriate location to mount e RC7or RC7GS. Use e dimension drawing provided to prepare e mounting surface, or install in a standard double-gang outlet box. 2. Place e On/Off switch on e front panel of e inverter to e Off position and disconnect AC power. Repeat whenever connecting e remote. 3. Insert e remote communications cable into e RJ11 port on e inverter/charger marked 'Remote Control'. Do not substitute an ordinary telephone cable. Insert e oer end of e cable into e RC7. 4. Wait for e LCD to display e message "Waiting for AC". 5. Place e On/Off switch on e inverter to e "On" position. (e remote will not operate e inverter wi is switch in e "Off" position). 6. Connect e inverter to an AC power source. After a brief delay, e RC7 will display a system status message similar to e illustration at follows: Inverting Arlington, WA USA Page 2
3 Front Panel Controls The RC7 and RC7GS have four pressure-sensitive buttons on e front panel: Inverter On/Off Menu Item Settings Setup Meter Inverter ON/OFF: Press is button once to turn e inverter On or Off. The charger section of e inverter/charger is not effected by is choice, it is always On when AC is present. If you have e RC7GS, You can also use is button to turn e generator On or Off. See Generator Start/Stop Menu Item/Setup: Press and hold bo of ese buttons at e same time for about 5 seconds (or until e display is clear) to enter e Setup Menu; en press e up or down arrow to scroll rough e menu selections. Settings: Press is button to change e settings wiin e Setup menu. Meter: Press and hold is button about 5 seconds or until e display is clear to enter e Meters display menu. RC7 & RC7GS Setup Menu The Setup menu allows you to configure e RC7 to your specific power center. Before using e RC7, enter e Setup Menu by pressing bo e Up and e Down arrows on e RC7 faceplate for approximately 5 seconds or until e LCD display clears, en release bo buttons. When you are finished configuring your RC7, press and hold bo e Up and Down arrow keys for approximately 5 seconds or until e screen clears. You choices will become saved to non-volatile memory 20 seconds after e screen clears if you do not change anying during e waiting period. The initial menu item to configure is shown below: Search Sense: Defeat The entire Setup menu is illustrated at e end of is section. Each menu selection is described below in e order in which ey appear on e Setup menu. Read rough is section and circle your preferences for use while programming e RC7, en retain is booklet for future reference. Search Sense Search Sense enables or disables e power-saving search mode logic built-in to your Trace inverter/charger. Consult your inverter/charger Owner s Manual for a complete description of Search Sense. Arlington, WA USA Page 3
4 To configure your RC7, enter e Setup menu as instructed previously. Search Sense is e first selection in e menu. To change e setting, scroll rough e menu choices by pressing e Right arrow key labeled Settings. If you pass e setting you desire, just keep pressing e Settings key until e selection reappears. The available choices are shown below: Search Sense: Defeat Default Search Sense will be disabled when you select Defeat. When you select any oer setting, a load of at least e selected watts will be required to activate e inverter. See your inverter/charger owner s manual for a detailed discussion about Search Sense loads. When e Search Sense setting at you desire is displayed, press eier e Up or Down arrow key to move on to anoer menu selection. Auto LBCO Search Sense: About.5W load Search Sense:...10W Search Sense:...40W Search Sense: > 40w The Automatic Low Battery Cut Off (Auto LBCO) prevents e inverter from draining your batteries below10.51 volts. When enabled (On), e inverter will shut off when e battery voltage drops to volts. When disabled (Off), e inverter will draw from e battery until voltage drops to about 8.5 volts, en shut off. When AC power is available, e inverter/charger will automatically reset and begin charging e batteries.. To set Auto LBCO On or Off, enter e Setup menu by pressing and holding bo e Up and e Down arrow at e same time until e screen display clears. Then press e Down arrow until e Auto LBCO item appears. Press e Settings button to change e current selection, en scroll to e next Setup menu item. The Auto LBCO display is shown below. Auto LBCO: Off Auto LBCO: On Battery Capacity Battery capacity refers to e reserve capacity in amphours of your battery or battery bank, not e cold cranking amps. The RC7 enables you to specify e approximate reserve capacity of your system so at it can more accurately calculate e battery state-of-charge (SOC) and remaining time-to-run. The RC7 automatically estimates your battery capacity and adjusts itself over several charge/discharge cycles, but setting e capacity will assure more accurate initial SOC and time-to-run calculations. The default setting is Auto. Auto Default Battery Type 125 Ahrs 250 Ahrs To optimize e battery charger s performance, you can specify e type of batteries at you are using: gel cell or liquid lead acid. 5 Charge Rate You can specify e battery charger s maximum output current using e Charge Rate menu. The default rate is 100% of e inverter/charger s maximum charge rate. Consult your inverter/charger Owner s Manual for information specific to your system. The Charge Rate menu is shown below: Charge Rate: 100% of max Charge Rate: 90% of max Charge Rate: 80% of max Charge Rate: 20% of max Charge Rate: 10% of max Default Vac Dropout Your inverter/charger monitors e voltage level of e AC power supplied to it. You can select e AC voltage at which e inverter switches from AC power to DC power. This assures a continuous supply of quality alternating current to your electrical loads. The lower e settings you select, e less frequently you inverter will switch from AC to DC. The range is from 40 to 100 volts. The selections are shown below: 40 Vac 70 Vac 75 Vac 80 Vac 85 Vac 90 Vac Default Shore Power Amps The shore power amperage setting is selectable. Your inverter monitors e AC power being drawn by bo e battery charger and e AC loads connected to e inverter. If e current draw approaches e circuit breaker s rating, e battery charger will reduce e amount of current going to e batteries. This control can also be used to prevent overloading of backup generators if ey are used to charge e battery as well. Adjust is setting to match your generator s maximum continuous output. This is usually lower an e rating of e circuit breaker provided on e generator s output. The Shore Power Amps menu is shown below. Shore Pwr Amps: 30 a Shore Pwr Amps: 25 a Shore Pwr Amps: 20 a Shore Pwr Amps: 5a Default RC7 Setup The RC7 LCD screen displays system status and error messages during normal operation. 6 Alternatively, you can choose e default system status message; any one of ese, or a power saving option at shuts e LCD and LED display off after 5 minutes wiout a key press or a new error message. The default is e Last Key selection, which displays e last system status message at you select after you exit e Setup Menu. The RC7 Setup menu is shown below: RC7 Setup: Last Key RC7 Setup: Power Saver RC7 Setup: Rolling Display LCD Contrast This menu item enables you to adjust e contrast of e screen display to accommodate changing lighting conditions. Less contrast may be preferable in brighter lighting conditions. The default setting is Max Contrast. The menu selections are shown below: LCD Contrast: Max Contrast LCD Contrast: 87% LCD Contrast: 62% LCD Contrast: 50% LCD Contrast: 12% LCD Contrast: Min Contrast Default External Shunt: When two inverter/chargers are utilized in a system, an external shunt will be required in order for e fuel gauge feature of e RC7 remote control to give accurate information about e charge state of e battery bank. See your inverter/charger Owner s Manual for instructions on installing an external shunt. The External Shunt menu enables you to configure two RC7 s for use wi two inverter chargers. The RC7 connected to e external shunt becomes e fuel gauge unit. Select e appropriate response from e following menu items: External Shunt: None External Shunt: This Inverter External Shunt: Oer Inverter Fuelgauge Cutout Use e Fuelgauge Cutout menu to set e voltage at e battery manufacturer specifies or you define as zero per cent State of Charge ( 0% SOC) wi no load. This is e voltage at which e battery has zero reserve amphours remaining. The fuel gauge meter uses is number to determine e 50% battery state-of-charge voltage. The factory setting is 11.4 volts. The menu selections are: Fuelgauge Cutout 9.5 VDC= 0% SOC Fuelgauge Cutout 10.3 VDC= 0% SOC Fuelgauge Cutout 11.7 VDC= 0% SOC Fuelgauge Cutout 11.8 VDC= 0% SOC Default Arlington, WA USA Page 6
7 RC7GS Setup Menu The RC7 and RC7GS remote controls share e Setup Menu items described previously. The RC7GS (Generator Start) features several additional Setup Menu selections related to automatic generator starting, stopping, and quiet times. Waiting for AC 4.625" Install e RC7GS as described earlier. Be sure e inverter/charger is disconnected from e AC power source and e On/Off switch on e inverter is in e Off position. Plug-in e RC7GS and turn e On/Off switch on e face of e inverter to e On position. The LCD screen will first display e software version number (version 1.10 or better required for Genstart functions), recognize e inverter software (also version 1.10 or better required), and en momentarily display a reminder to set e clock: Set time to enable Auto Genset start and stop. The message Waiting for AC will en be displayed. Connect e inverter to an AC source and proceed to configure e installation. Set Clock Many of e Genstart functions are time-of-day based, so e first task is to set e clock. The clock uses 24-hour military time. The range is from 00:00 to 23:59. Press and hold bo Setup buttons until e screen clears and e RC7GS emits a beep tone, en scroll down rough e Setup menu until e Set Clock menu item is displayed: A flashing cursor will appear below and behind one of e hour (H) characters or one of e minute (M) characters on e display. Every eight (8) seconds e cursor will jump from benea an hour digit to a minute digit or vice-versa unless e Settings key is pressed. Arlington, WA USA Page 7
8 When e cursor is under e hour character, press e Settings key to increment e hours. Repeat to set e minutes. Press and hold e Settings key to increment e values quickly, or press and release e settings key to increment e value by one unit. Select Genset After setting e RC7GS s internal clock, press e Up arrow key to display e Select Genset menu item. Press e Settings key until e name and model of your generator is displayed (not all generators are supported). Then press an arrow key to scroll to e next menu item. The menu selections are shown below: Select Genset: Onan QuietDiesel Default Generator Start Select Genset: Oer 10 Set Clk: 0-23:59 HH:MM Select Genset: Oer 20 Select Genset: Oer 80 After set setting e clock and selecting a generator, you can set e parameters for automatically starting and stopping e genset based upon battery voltage or state-ofcharge. Scroll rough e Setup Menu until e Generator Start menu is displayed. Press e Settings key until e desired setting is displayed. Then go on to anoer menu. The setting will take effect 20 seconds after you exit e Setup Menu if no oer action is taken. Generator Start: Manual (Push On) Generator Start: Auto at 40% SOC Generator Start: Auto at 60% SOC Generator Start: Auto at 11.0 VDC Generator Start: Auto at 12.2 VDC Default The default generator Start selection is Manual (Push On). This setting disables all automatic start functions. Any oer selection from e Generator start menu will enable e RC7GS to automatically start e generator based upon battery state-of-charge or voltage. You can start or stop e generator set at any time by pressing e Down arrow key on e User Menu until e screen shown below is displayed, en pressing e On/Off button on e RC7GS faceplate until e generator starts or stops. Release e On/Off key as soon as e generator starts. If e inverter/charger senses an AC supply while e remote control On/Off button is pressed, it will shut down e generator. Generator Stop Gen Start/Stop: Press (On/Off) You can configure e RC7GS to shut down e generator automatically when e batteries reach 90 to 99% SOC, or when e charger initiates e Absorption or e Float stage of charging. Refer to your inverter/charger Owner s Manual for a detailed discussion of charging stages. The Generator Stop menu selections are shown below; e default setting is Manual (Push Off). Generator Stop options are shown below: Manual (Push Off) Auto at 90% SOC Auto at 95% SOC Auto at 99% SOC Auto at Absorb Auto at Float Default Begin Gen Quiet & End Gen Quiet The RC7GS enables you to define a period of time during which e generator is prevented from starting automatically. You can specify e beginning and ending of is quiet time. To specify a begin or end time, scroll to e Begin or End Gen Quiet menu item and set e time in e same way at you set e clock. See Set Clock above for specific directions. If e genset is running at e Begin Gen Quiet time, it will be shut down automatically. The two menu items are shown below: Begin Gen Quiet: HH:MM End Gen Quiet: HH:MM Saving Your Setup Choices Once you have completed e installation and setup of e RC7/GS, press and hold bo e Up and e Down arrow keys simultaneously for five seconds or until e display clears. Your setup choices will be saved in non-volatile memory 20 seconds after you exit e Setup menu if no oer actions are taken. Your selections will be preserved until you change em, even if you disconnect e RC7/GS from AC and/ or DC power. RC7 & RC7GS System Status Displays The RC7 & RC7GS remote controls enable you to monitor e operating mode and system status of your inverter/charger by lighting one or more of e LEDs located on e unit s faceplate and/or by displaying a message on e LCD. The four LEDs reflect e same information as e single LED on e inverter/charger. There are four types of system messages: AC source messages Inverter messages Charger messages Error messages AC Source Messages AC source messages tell you if alternating current is present In addition, e RC7GS AC source messages describe e current activity, if any, of e generator. Waiting for AC Anytime e inverter is off and AC is not present, e LCD screen will display e message below. When an AC supply is available, anoer system status message will be displayed. 10 Pending Genstart, Cranking Genset, and AC Available These messages will be displayed whenever e RC7GS has been setup to start e generator at a specified condition, and at condition has arisen. When e initiating condition (SOC or battery voltage) has occurred, e Pending Genstart message will be displayed for approximately two minutes awaiting a change in e condition or a manual override. If neier occurs, e RC7GS will attempt to start e generator and will display e Cranking Genset message. When e generator starts, ere will be a brief delay to allow e genset to reach operating speed and allow e inverter/charger to synchronize voltage wi it; en e AC Available message will be displayed. Starter Cooldown and Gen Won t Start In e event e genset does not start wiin irty-seconds, a two-minute starter cool-down period will occur and e Starter Cooldown message will be displayed after which anoer attempt to start e genset will occur. This cycle (cranking - cooldown - cranking) will repeat ree more times for a total of four attempts to start e genset over a 12-minute period. If e genset has not started after four attempts, e RC7GS will display e Gen Won t Start error message and e Error LED on e faceplate will be lighted red. No furer attempts to start e genset will occur. Correct e generator starting problem and manually start e genset. You can reset it using e Setup menu by changing e GenStart option to Manual,. Gen Quiet Fault Genset Status: PendingGenstart Genset Status: Starter Cooldown Waiting for AC Genset Status: Cranking Genset Genset Status: Gen Wont start Genset Status: AC Available Whenever e RC7GS Gen Start function is configured to Auto Start your generator under a specified condition and at condition occurs during e specified Gen Quiet period, e LCD will display e Gen Quiet Fault message, e Error LED will be lighted, and e remote control unit will emit a series of beeping sounds for up to five minutes or until e error condition is corrected (whichever occurs first). You can override e Gen Quiet period by resetting e Gen Quiet Begin and End time to 00:00. If e genset is manually started during e quiet time, it will be shut down automatically. The Gen Quiet Fault error is reset automatically at e end of e quiet time if no oer action is taken, and e Auto Genstart function will execute. Gen Quiet Fault Arlington, WA USA Page10
11 Inverter Mode Messages When e inverter is On (no AC present), it is eier inverting or it is testing e AC output circuits for loads at meet e Search Sense selection criteria (if Search Mode is selected). Search Mode reduces by about 90% e amount of energy required to operate e inverter while idling. When e inverter is in Search Mode, e LCD will display e Searching message shown below and e LED will be flashing slowly each time e unit probes e AC output circuit for a load. When e unit is inverting, e LCD will display e Inverting message and e LED will be lighted steadily. Charger Mode Messages Whenever AC power is available, e inverter/charger will automatically switch to charger mode. There are ree separate charger modes: Bulk, Absorption, and Float. Consult your inverter/charger Owner s Manual for more information about ese charging modes. When e charger is charging in Bulk mode, e LCD will display e Bulk Charging message and e Charge LED will be lighted steadily. When e charger is charging in Absorption mode, e LCD will display e Absorption Chg message, and e Charge LED will flash slowly. The Bat Full LED will be lighted steadily when e battery is 90 to 100% fully charged.. When e charger is charging in e Float mode, e LCD will display e Float Charging message, e Charge LED will not be lighted, and e Bat Full LED will be lighted steadily. Bulk Charging Error Mode Messages Searching Absorption Chg Inverting Float Charging Your inverter/charger protects itself and your energy system from damage caused by overloading, high battery and internal temperatures, overcharging by an external source, and oer problems. The RC7 and RC7GS report ese conditions by lighting e Error LED, sounding an alarm buzzer for up to five minutes, and displaying an error message on e LCD suggesting e appropriate action to remedy e error condition. In most cases, e inverter/charger will shut down until e error condition is corrected. Over Temperature When is message is displayed, e inverter/charger transformer and power components have exceeded a safe operating temperature. Reduce e load on e inverter. When it has cooled, it will automatically reset and resume operating. If is condition occurs often, make sure e inverter is in a cool location, has adequate ventilation, and e cooling fan is operational. Otemp/Less Load Arlington, WA USA Page11
12 Overload When is message is displayed, e loads on e inverter/charger exceed e maximum power rating of e unit. Reduce e loads on e inverter and restart it. High Battery Voltage This message indicates at e battery voltage is too high. Turn off any oer charging sources to allow e voltage level to drop. The inverter will automatically reset and resume operating when e battery reaches a safe voltage level. This condition will usually occur only when an additional charging source is used to charge your battery or battery bank. Low Battery Voltage Oload/Less Load Hibat Stop Charge The battery voltage has dropped below a safe level. The inverter/charger has shut off to prevent damage to e batteries. Provide an AC supply and e inverter/charger will automatically reset and start charging. This error will also occur wi e RC7GS when e Auto Genstart function has been disabled, or e genset will not start. Lobat Start Charge Meters Display The RC7 and RC7GS have built-in meters at enable you to monitor inverter charger activity. In order to view ese meters, press and hold e Meter key (Up arrow key) for five seconds, or until e LCD clears. You can en scroll rough e meters by pressing e Down arrow key. These meter displays are intended for and most useful to service technicians. Average Shunt Amps This meter displays e averaged current going rough e internal shunt (external shunt if more an one inverter/charger is used) to and from e batteries. Battery Voltage Avg Shunt Amps -/+ 0 Amps DC Displays e current battery voltage level. This meter will be useful for checking e condition of e batteries or monitoring voltage levels under load. 13 Inverter-Charger Current Displays e actual current (not an average) passing rough e inverter to AC loads when an AC supply is available, or provided by e inverter when inverting. AC Input Voltage This meter displays e actual AC voltage and peak AC voltage supply to e inverter/charger, measured at e AC Input Hot 1 terminal. AC Output Voltage Displays e actual AC Voltage output of e inverter/charger measured at e AC Output Hot 1 terminal. AC Input Amps Appears only on e RC7GS display. Measures e actual AC amperes passing rough e AC Input Hot 1 terminal. Pass Through Amps Appears only on e RC7. Displays e actual AC amps passing rough e inverter/charger when an external AC source is supplied. Measured at e AC Input Hot 1 terminal. Battery Temperature Inv/Chg Current: +/- 0 Amps DC AC Input 000 Vac 000 Vpk AC Output: 000 Vac AC Input: 0 Amps AC Pass-ru Amps: 0 Amps AC This meter displays e external temperature of your battery or battery bank when equipped wi a Battery Temperature Sensor (BTS). The scale is divided into counts, which do not directly correspond to e Fahrenheit or Celsius temperature scale. A higher reading indicates a lower temperature. 14 Transformer Temperature This meter displays e internal temperature of e inverter/charger s transformer. The scale is divided into counts, which do not directly correspond to e Fahrenheit or Celsius temperature scale. A higher reading indicates a lower temperature. This meter is useful to service technicians only. FET Temperature Displays e relative temperature of e Field Effect Transistors, which regulate e output waveform of e inverter. A higher reading indicates cooler temperatures. This meter is useful to factory technicians only. FET Temp: 000 counts Estimated Battery Capacity This meter reports e estimated battery amp-hour capacity based upon e average amphours used, and e rate and duration of e charging cycles. Multiply e reading by eight to arrive at e approximate battery capacity. This is only an approximation, and it will become more accurate as e number of charge/discharge cycles increase. Operating Display Upon installation of e RC7 or RC7GS, e LCD screen will display general-purpose system-status messages. This is e screen at you return to upon exiting e Setup, Settings, or Meters menu. These operating messages monitor e battery state-of charge (SOC), time remaining to run, and time left to charge. It also provides e Gen Start/Stop switch. By pressing e Down arrow key, you can view each of ese meters in e sequence in which ey are discussed below. Battery State of Charge Xformer Temp: 000 counts Est. Bat. Cap: 00 Amp-hrs(x8) This meter displays e estimated State-of-Charge (SOC) of e battery or battery bank. The state of charge is based upon e estimated battery capacity. Because it is damaging to most batteries to discharge em to less an half of eir capacity, is meter estimates e battery SOC at 0% when e battery amphours remaining has reached half of e estimated battery capacity. To switch from one display to e oer, just press e Settings key when e SOC meter is displayed. Time Left to Run This meter displays e estimated hours and tens of hours (six minutes) at e batteries will support e present load before requiring charging.
