1 Korean Hand Therapy KHT has taken Korea by storm and spread to 50 countries worldwide. Since starting in Japan in 1978, there are now 17 foreign countries in Asia, Europe and the Americas have KHT centres teaching the techniques. Korea has 190 centres and over four million people worldwide have taken training. What is KHT? KHT is a unique and versatile style of micro reflex acupuncture. Precise mapping of all the body TCM points are reflected on the hand enabling practitioners to apply all acupuncture paradigms from normal point stimulation, reduction and tonification to 5 element practice and the use of extraordinary channels. KHT provides an additional treatment approach to quickly and effectively resolve today s complex health problems through traditional energetic medicine. Those practitioners embarking on this relatively new field will discover that KHT has the potential to revolutionize a patient s acceptance of acupuncture, regardless of the system of acupuncture in which they have been trained. What imbalances/illnesses can KHT be used for? KHT can be used to treat all the modern diseases and disorders that body acupuncture and other therapies such as reflexology and aromatherapy are used for. Korean Hand Therapy The advantages of KHT use in a practice setting In clinical practice, KHT can be easily integrated with traditional body acupuncture KHT offers a range of non-invasive techniques that can be utilised for those with a fear of needles or invasive therapies such as children. It is also useful for those with mobility problems such as the elderly and disabled, as treatment only takes place on the hands. Corresponding points can be used on the hands to avoid use of traditional points located in areas of the body such as Ren1 and Du1. Little equipment is needed. A patient can be treated fully clothed, sitting on a chair. KHT is easily learned, safe to use, and may be administered through simple finger pressure. The needles are much smaller and their depth of penetration is much shallower (about 1mm), thus the discomfort of treatment is minimised. There are no vital structures or organs in the region of the treatment points that may be damaged inadvertently. KHT is increasingly being used in multi bed clinics because of its speed of treatment Practitioners can demonstrate self-treatment techniques to the patient Enables the practitioner to self-treat Page 1 of 15
2 Three Main Theories of KHT The three main theories in KHT are Correspondence Theory, Micro meridian Theory and Five Finger Theory Correspondence Theory The hands reflect the anatomy and physiology of the whole body; therefore, all the functions of the internal organs can be controlled by stimulating corresponding points and areas on the hands for the treatment and prevention of disease. Micromeridian Theory There are 14 micro meridians on each hand and 345 points on these 14 meridians. By stimulating the points on the micromeridian and/or the micromeridian pathway itself, the physiological function of the whole body can be regulated. Five finger Theory Clinical experiments performed by In-Soon Park (1989) suggest that each finger corresponds to one of the zhang organs and reflects as well as influences the energy of that organ. Main Diagnostic Methods in KHT Korean Hand Therapy Yin Yang Pulse Diagnosis Korbin (1990) notes in a homeostatic state, the relative pulse strength of the carotid and radial arteries should be about equal on each side of the body. The carotid and vertebral artery pulses reflect the evenness of cerebral blood flow. Since both the vertebral and radial arteries arise from the subclavian artery, the strength of radial pulse can be used as substitute for the vertebral artery if the wrist is held at the level of the heart. The concept of the cerebral blood flow in KHT was first mentioned in the Yellow Emperor s Classic of Internal Medicine (LingShu, Chapter 9, ZhongShi), but has not been utilized in clinical experience for a long time because of its vague and poor explanation. Dr Yoo (the modern day founder of KHT) discovered the yin yang pulse diagnostic method that is used to discern the abnormality of the zhang fu organs by comparing the widths and the sizes of the radial and carotid pulses. When the renying (ST9) pulse is twice as large as the cunkou (LU9) pulse, the disease is in the foot shaoyang channel of Gall bladder. When it is twice as large and impetuous, the disease is in the hand shaoyang channel of triple warmer when the renying pulse is twice as large as the cunkou pulse, the foot shaoyang channel of gallbladder should be purged and the foot jueyin channel of liver should be invigorated (LingShu, Chapter 9, ZhongShi) Three Constitutions Theory There have been many diagnostic theories and methods throughout Oriental medical history. It seems that almost no one has provided an objective and systematic method in order to diagnose the excess or deficiency state of the Zhang Fu organs. Determining the conditions of the Zhang Fu organs is the main key point in the advanced level of Oriental medicine. In revealing the states of the 12 Viscera and Bowels, the Three Constitutions Theory makes use of the Five Elements Theory upon which it is based. Page 2 of 15

12 What previous students have said about the workshops and KHT: I have been practising KHT for 8 years and have some really excellent results both using KHT as a stand-alone therapy and also in conjunction with body acupuncture. Recently I treat a young female who had debilitating rheumatoid arthritis I diagnosed her as Kidney Excess and used Sanjiao Sung Bang needle treatment. Her symptoms after the first session were reduced by about 70%. After a short number of treatments she is now fully recovered. I have been practicing KHT for 3 years and have found it invaluable in treating certain conditions. I use KHT on every patient. It works so well for patients that are needle phobic. KHT has definitely improved patient response. Relaxation is greater, people enjoy it. I would recommend adding KHT to every treatment KHT has completely changed the way I treat patients. I now only occasionally use body acupuncture. I have had some amazing results. I recently treat a patient for skin problems and I had tried everything on her and decided to try KHT which I had just returned from the advanced practitioner course. After giving her one treatment I saw her the following week and her skin condition had virtually gone. Student Feedback I have been practising KHT for approximately 7 years. I now only diagnose patients using KHT and then apply both a body acupuncture treatment as well as a KHT treatment. My success rate and speed of recovery rate has most definitely improved. I recently treat a patient with chronic IBS. I only used KHT with her and so far the results have been really encouraging. She no longer has griping pain after every meal and there is also no bowel urgency now. I think perhaps 2 or three more treatments and she will be back to normal Thoroughly enjoyable. Jong s knowledge is endless and his teaching style is so enthusiastic. I can t wait to come back for more Thanks for a fantastic course, I feel KHT has really improved my understand of 5 elements and TCM in general. I thoroughly enjoyed the course We treat both patients and relatives with KHT and in some cases patients are so poorly the subtle treatment that KHT provides works really well for patients. Treating patients using KHT is so convenient. I massage a lot and often am rushed to also fit in a full TCM body treatment. In these cases, I just simply apply KHT while the patient is being massaged. The whole process of patient intake, diagnosis and treatment is so logical. All treatment protocols are tabled out for you I therefore feel very confident in both the diagnosis and treatment of patients using KHT KHT Workshops accredited by ATCM Page 12 of 15
13 What students have said about the workshops: (all direct quotes from anonymous feedback forms) I enjoyed the course very much The course was excellent, very enjoyable and pleasant company. Will be back for more Very enjoyable. See you again in September. Jong.by the way.where do you get your energy from?! Lectures, materials and demonstrations are well balanced and interesting very very good! Am very happy to go away and start using it. Also very good support throughout course and once qualified great support afterwards, you must work 24 hours a day! Thank you so much 10/10! Student Feedback The course is very intense. I hadn t realised just how much information there is to take in. However, the diagnostic system is very pragmatic AND objective, and so I feel confident that my diagnosis even though I m only newly qualified.is not too far off the mark. My TCM pulse taking will take years to refine and I much prefer the abdomen palpation and Yin Yang pulse taking in KHT I enjoyed the course and feedback from my patients has been very positive Most enjoyable. Maybe a lot of stuff in a little time, but then there is the opportunity to revisit on follow up weekends which is brilliant. Looking forward to doing it again.can t wait My practice is multi-bed, low cost and KHT suits me perfectly. My patients love it and I m having real success. Most fascinating for me is the change I have noticed in some of my patients since I have added KHT to their treatment. Page 13 of 15
