1 Fantasy Fiction Book Projects Due: Thursday, March 21 st For this month s book project you will choose 1 of the 2 projects: Sandwich Book or Cereal Box Project. The guidelines for both are below, so make sure you pick one that you think would be the best one for you! CHOICE 1: Sandwich Book Project Here are the instructions for creating your sandwich book. You will complete the required parts, using the templates provided. 1. Write the book title, author, and illustrator (if there is one) and your name on the BREAD TOP. 2. Write a 1-2 paragraph summary of the book on the LETTUCE. This would be like what you might read on the back of a book, providing only the most important details. 3. Describe or draw the book s setting on the TOMATO. 4. Describe the main character(s) on the MEAT. 5. Write about the book s problem or the main event on the CHEESE. 6. Describe a part of the book that you thought was sweet or sad on the ONION. 7. Tell what you liked or didn t like about the book and the reasons why on the BREAD BOTTOM. 8. Lightly color (in crayon or colored pencil) each part of the sandwich, but make sure you can still read everything you wrote. You can always color each part first, then type the information and glue it onto the template. 9. Last, put your sandwich together. You can staple it or fasten it together with a brad or a ring. (Ms. Coleman can provide you with these)

2 CHOICE 2: Cereal Box Book Project If you could event a cereal based on the book you read, what would it be? Here are the instructions for creating your cereal box project. You will use a large, empty cereal box (or a box of that size) and cover each side as the directions below indicate. 1. Cover the entire box with construction paper, to hide whatever writing or pictures are underneath. 2. Choose a name that sounds appealing and that relates to your story. On the FRONT of the box, you will write the name of your cereal and draw a picture to go with it. You might draw characters or other pictures, to help sell your product. (Look at actual cereal boxes for ideas) i. Your will also need to include the author and your name somewhere on the front. 3. On the BACK, you will design a game or activity that is based on the story. It can be a puzzle, a word game, or any other fun activity that you think would be found on the back of a cereal box. i. Other ideas include: a mail-in offer for a toy, advertisements that tell why people should read the book or a cartoon based on the book. 4. On the RIGHT side, you will use the heading Ingredients, and list the characters. You will neatly write or type 1-2 sentences describing each character. On the bottom ½ of this same side, you will write a 1 paragraph description of the setting. 5. On the LEFT side, you will neatly write or type a 1-2 paragraph summary of the book, including information about the main events, which include the problem or conflict and the solution, in detail.

3 Sandwich Project Rubric 1. All layers of the sandwich book are neatly typed or handwritten and are at least 1-2 paragraphs in length. 2. The bread top includes the book title, author, and illustrator (if there is one) and your name. 3. The lettuce includes a 1-2 paragraph summary of the book that includes the most important details. 4. The tomato includes a description or drawing of the book s setting. 5. The meat includes a description of the main character(s). 6. The cheese includes a description of the book s problem or main event. 7. The onion includes what you thought was sweet or sad in the book. 8. The bread bottom includes what you liked or didn t like about the book and the reasons why. 9. All layers of the sandwich book are lightly colored. 10. Sandwich book includes correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. TOTAL: / 100 See comments on back

4 Cereal Box Rubric 1. Project is done on a cereal or similar sized box, which is covered in construction paper. 2. Front of box includes an appealing title and a creative, illustration. 3. Front of the box includes the author s name and your name. 4. The back of the cereal box includes a creative game or activity that is based on the story. 5. The right side of the cereal box includes a 1-2 sentence description of the book s characters. 6. The right side of the cereal box includes a 1 paragraph description of the setting. 7. The left side of the cereal box includes a 1-2 paragraph summary of the book, including information about the main events. 8. All sides of the cereal box are neatly typed or handwritten. 9. Cereal box is creative, well organized, and sells your product effectively. 10. Cereal box includes correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. TOTAL: / 100 See comments on back
