1 Ancient Civilization Research Project Your Research Project will include three parts: a historical artifact that you create, research notes on your civilization, and a Power point slide show presentation based on your research. I have chosen the civilization for you to do your research on. Sources of information might include your Social Studies textbook, an encyclopedia, books from the library and the internet. Mrdonn.org is a great website to start with! You will have class time to work on your power point. Most of the research (finding information and taking notes) will need to be done at home. The artifact should be created at home. Please ask questions early and often. There should be no stress or confusion at the last minute. I have read the research project guidelines and I understand the requirements and due dates. I would highly recommend that you NOT BLOW OFF this assignment. You will fail Social Studies if you do. Historical Artifact Create a three-dimensional model of an object which represents the civilization you chose. This could be a model of a building or structure, a tool or weapon, an article of clothing, something used in everyday life, something used in a religious ceremony - there are unlimited possibilities. Please check with me before you begin, to make sure you are on the right track. You must also be able to present your artifact explaining why you picked it and also what significance it has to your society. *****Your historical artifact is due November 7 th ***** 15 points 2. Research Notes You must come to class with notes to use to create your power point slides. Use the questions below to collect information about each of the cultural aspects for your civilization. You must also have proper works cited or bibliography page in your power point stating where you got all your information for your notes. I will provide you with an outline and also index cards to be sure you have all your topics covered. Your notes will be checked. You must turn in a 'works cited' page, on a piece of paper or a note card, listing the sources you used to gather information. (Books, websites, encyclopedias, etc) *****Notes and Works Cited due December 1 st ***** 20 points 3. Power point Slide Show To receive an "AS" grade, your power point must include the following slides: 1. A title slide which includes the name of the civilization, your name, and an appropriate, colorful graphic. 2. A timeline of the Ancient Civilization s most important events, minimum of 5 events. 3. A map of the world showing the location of the civilization you have researched A slide on each of the six cultural aspects for your civilization: 1. Environment - How did the people adapt to their land, climate (what type of climate), and natural resources?

2 Include the importance of the following: Egypt: Nile River Valley Mesopotamia: Tigris & Euphrates Rivers China: Huang He River Rome: Aqueducts 11. Economic System - What were the jobs, technology, transportation, slavery, trade and money? 12. Belief System - What were the religious beliefs and practices, birth and death rituals, myths, values? 13. Political System - Who ruled, what type of government, how were they chosen, laws, how were conflicts resolved? 14. Social System - Was there a class system? What were the roles of men, women, and children? Describe family life and the people in it? Are there any traditions or customs for this group? 15. Aesthetic System - Describe the art, literature, architecture, leisure activities, and other items considered valuable and beautiful by the culture. 16. Important people-identify the roles and contributions of the following: Greece: Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Sophocles, Euripides, Pericles, Homer and Alexander the Great. Egypt: Hatshepsut, Ramses, Cleopatra. Rome: Julius Caesar, Augustus China: Qin Shi, Huan Di, Confucius Mesopotamia: Sumerians, Hittites, Kassites, God Assur, 17. Writing style: Name of it and method; was it letters, numbers, symbols, pictures? 18. Works Cited slide- You must use at least 5 different resources and three different styles of literature (internet site, text book, magazine etc.) Each slide must include enough written information to explain the cultural aspect in the civilization you researched. You may choose outline (bullets) or paragraph form for your writing. Your presentation should have a uniform appearance - in other words the style (background, font, and layout) of the slides should all be similar. All power points must have a 10 question quiz at the end 40 points To receive a "MS" grade, you must do all of the above and include a slide on: 1. An interesting or unique feature of this civilization (for example Greek mythology, Egyptian Pyramids or the Great Wall of China) Points for this portion To receive an "ES" grade, you must do all of the above and a write a one page essay explaining why the civilization you researched was important, and how you think it affects or relates to our world today points for this portion Your power point must be saved in the 'Ancient Civilization' folder with your name in the title (i.e. SusieGreece.ppt). DO NOT print copies!! Print out your essay and turn that in to Mrs. Blank.

5 Works Cited Page (Bibliography) You can use your write source book as a reference, pages , for how to correctly display the information you use. Keep in mind that different resources (books, internet sites, etc.) require a different style of entry. Tips: Begin the Works Cited on a new page, but number consecutively (i.e., if the last page of your essay is page 3, the Works Cited is page 4) Alphabetize each entry by first letter Underline all titles of books, magazines, films, etc. Put quotation marks around the titles of poems, short stories, and articles Indent the 2 nd line, the 3 rd line, and all subsequent lines of each citation Double-space all entries...the examples which follow are single-spaced only to save space on this handout The website here will also show you how to cite different types of literature.
