1 Technology Use Policy for ipads and Mobile Devices School Mission : 1. To equip students with the required 21st century skill set to be competitive on the global stage. 2. To develop life- long learners who can participate in the digital age in a committed and responsible manner. 3. 4 1. Protecting my ipad 1.1 ipad Supervision! I must always know where my ipad is at all times.! I must never leave my ipad unsupervised.! I must lock my ipad in my book locker if I cannot keep it on my person ipad Storage! I must ensure that my ipad is safely placed on my desk when using it, i.e. the ipad should not be left on desk corners, chairs or the floor.! I must always keep my ipad in its case. 2. Taking Care of my ipad 2.1. Transporting my ipad! I must never use my ipad while I am walking or moving from one class to another.! I must carry my ipad safely, i.e. pack it appropriately in my bag, hold it securely when walking from one location to another, and handle it with caution. 2.2 Montreal Police Department (SPVM) Recommendation:! The SPVM advises young people to never use their ipads when taking public transport. The Police Department insists that ipads never leave students bags. Police recommend that students not remove their ipads from their backpacks when travelling by bus, train, subway or while walking. The SPVM asserts that these measures are essential for student safety. 2.3 ipad Case! I must not stick labels or any other paraphernalia on my ipad or its case. 3. Use of the ipad at School 3.1. Use of the ipad During Class! I must have my ipad case on and my ipad screen must be covered.! I must only use my ipad when instructed by my teacher.! I must only use my ipad for class- related work.! During class time, my ipad must remain closed on my desk until which time the teacher instructs me to open it.! I am not permitted to use social media (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Tumblr, etc) during class time unless specifically authorized by my teacher. 5 ! I am not permitted to play games during class time unless specifically authorized by my teacher.! I understand that I am not permitted to videotape, audiotape, or take photos of teachers or fellow students during class. I understand that this constitutes a breach of privacy and carries with it a 15 demerit penalty and an immediate 5 day suspension with the possibility of expulsion. 3.2 Evaluation Policy! My ipad must be securely put away during an evaluation, test or examination, unless a teacher has given alternate instructions.! I understand that if I am caught using my ipad during an evaluation, test or examination without teacher permission, I will receive an automatic grade of 0 on the evaluation, test or examination. Additionally, the penalty for cheating as outlined in the school agenda will be applied. 3.3 ipad Forgotten at Home! I understand that if I forget my ipad at home no school ipad will be lent to me. I am responsible for completing the work I have missed in class on my own time. I acknowledge that demerits for forgotten school material will be issued accordingly by my teacher.! The Multimedia Department will not lend out cables, adaptors or ipads to students if they have forgotten their equipment at home. 3.4 Reccharging my ipad! I must charge my ipad every night so that it is fully charged for the next day. 3.5 Wallpaper & Screen Savers! It is strictly forbidden to use wallpaper or screen savers containing inappropriate material, e.g., pornographic material, inappropriate language, gang- related imagery or symbols associated to drug or alcohol usage. 3.6 Sounds! I must turn on the do not disturb option on my ipad and leave it activated throughout the school day.! I must ensure that my ipad is set to mute. 3.7 Homework / Assignments! I understand that a technical problem with my ipad is not a valid reason for not completing my work. I acknowledge that it is my responsibility to make my teacher aware of the problem immediately and to find an alternate way to hand in my work. 6 4. Responsible Use of the ipad 4.1 School Rights! The content of my ipad may be inspected at any time by any member of the Villa Maria Faculty for safety reasons.! Should a student not abide by one or several of the rules outlined above, the school reserves the right to:! Administer an applicable punishment including, but not limited to, demerits, suspension or expulsion;! Confiscate the student s ipad;! Erase inappropriate content or links from the student s device. 4.2 School Responsibilities Villa Maria is committed to:! Providing appropriate technical assistance to students;! Providing all students access to efficient and comprehensive Internet service;! Ensure that parents be provided with a device at the best possible cost;! Educate students on the responsible use of the tablet. Villa Maria is not responsible for:! Financial damages based on the student s use of the ipad;! Lost personal data based on the student s use of the ipad;! Technical support for wireless Internet connection problems incurred at home. 4.3 Student Responsibilities! I must be vigilant with online security and never provide my passwords to anyone.! I must never provide third party sources with personal information (last names, phone numbers, addresses, birth dates, photos, etc.) or financial information (credit card number, bank account number, etc.).! I must not have any active credit cards associated to my Apple id, itunes account or any other program or application running on my ipad.! I must ensure that I have properly activated the privacy settings on the applications that I use.! In order to keep my social networking profile secure, I should set my profile as private and limit my information to friends only. Technology Use Policy for ipads and Mobile Devices Page 6
7 4.4 Prohibited Activities, Conduct and Use I understand that I must obey the following restrictions regarding my ipad usage at all times. I acknowledge that failure to abide by these rules is a punishable offence. It is strictly prohibited to:! Post or publish messages, images, photos, videos or audio tapes without authorization through means of social media or public communication (e.g. Internet, Facebook, text message, etc.) regarding the school, students or staff on or off- campus;! Engage in cyber- bullying, intimidation or harassment of any kind;! Engage in any activity that can be construed as racist or sexist;! Engage in any activity that violates the privacy or well- being of another person;! Access, download or send offensive, sexually explicit, threatening, obscene or pornographic material.! Vandalise, jailbreak or hack an ipad;! Download any material during school hours (i.e. apps, movies, music, etc.);! Use a school account ( or otherwise) for any commercial or illegal activity;! Attempt to access or use someone else s account with or without their authorisation. 4.5 Intellectual Property It is strictly prohibited to:! Use the School s name, logo, uniform, photos or other intellectual property without authorization when creating online content or posting content online;! Plagiarize work; be it textual, visual or audio sources;! Violate copyright laws: note that pictures may also be protected under copyright laws. 4.6 Technical Problems! In the event that you encounter a technical problem with your ipad you may pass by the Multimedia Centre only during your Sector s lunch at the following times: 11:45-12:15 and 13:00-13:30. You cannot go the Multimedia Department between classes or after school for assistance.! All students who have the Apple Care + insurance program are encouraged to contact Apple Care customer service for assistance with technical problems from home. They are open seven days a week from 9:00 am 9:00 p.m. You can reach them at: Loss or Theft of the ipad! If you lose your ipad, please contact your Assistant Director immediately. Parents must claim the loss via their insurance plan.! If your ipad is stolen, please contact the SPVM and file a police report. Parents must claim the loss via their insurance plan. 8 5. Use of the ipad Outside Class Time 5.1 ipad Use Time Table! My ipad may be used at the following times:! During class time (with teacher authorization);! At lunch (in authorized areas only);! After school (in authorized areas only). 5.2 Library! I may use my ipad in the library, but must follow all of the classroom rules outlined above when doing so. 5.3 ipad Use Areas! The ipad can be used anywhere in the school except in the corridors when traveling and in the restrooms.! Given this freedom, the school reserves the right to restrict ipad usage in the case of excessive use. 6. Devices other than the ipad! The rules outlined in this policy also apply to all mobile devices, including but not limited to tablets, laptops, MP3 players, ipods, etc.! Students are not permitted to use other mobile devices in class without the authorization of their teachers.! Cell phone regulations: You are permitted to have your cell phones on your person throughout the day, but they must be turned off and can only be used at lunch or after- school in the areas outlined in your agenda. The consequences for breaking this rule are also outlined in the Student Agenda.! Any Staff member has the right to confiscate a student s mobile device should an infringement of the rules outlined in this Policy occur. 7. Contract for Students & Parents/Guardians! Parents/Guardians must sign the Parent Acknowledgement Letter distributed in August and check off the box associated to the Technology Use Policy for ipads and Mobile Devices thereby consenting to abide by the rules outlined in this policy.! Students, along with their parents/guardians must fill in the contract on p. 9 of this document and keep it for their personal records. Technology Use Policy for ipads and Mobile Devices Page 8

I agree to abide by the rules as outlined by the school. I understand that failure to abide by the rules is a punishable school offence and consequences will be duly bestowed upon me should I break any of the rules included in this policy.
