1 February 4, 2013 Dear Parents/Guardian, Subject: Computer Network and Internet Use Agreement Guidelines Every student will receive a permission form that must be co-signed by parents/guardians and returned to the School Library. It is referred to as the Acceptable Use Agreement. Your signature is required before any access to the school s computer network and wi-fi facilities are granted. Students will receive this login password [called computer account login] for access to the school network and Internet services only when this form is returned. The password gives remote access to the school network from home as well. Throughout the year, class teachers and mentors will discuss these guidelines with students, and they will advise parents/guardians, when appropriate, about policies and expectations of online safety and security with the use of ICT, the School s Intranet, , Internet services, computing devices and mobile phones. In particular, in the first week, class teachers will assist Junior and Middle School students understand the importance of the simplified six basic responsibilities of these guidelines. Teachers across the School take these guidelines seriously and expect students to have read and discussed the guidelines with their families. For your interest and information, please find attached to this letter a copy of the Computer Network and Internet Use Guidelines and the separate form, titled Acceptable Use Agreement Form. 3 Computer Network and Internet Use Guidelines Students Responsibilities There are six basic responsibilities for students use of the computer network: 1. Use computer accounts wisely and securely. Do not share your account or password with anyone. 2. Do regular back-ups of all your work. Whilst the School does perform regular back-ups, do not rely upon the School for immediate, instant or sole access to your work. 3. Follow rules of computer etiquette. Use appropriate language, common rules of courtesy and respect, and avoid all forms of bullying and harassment. 4. Be honest. Do not represent or present another's work as your own. Other sources and others ideas must be acknowledged. 5. Follow the law. Unless specifically stated by the School, other producers or publishers, the copying or sharing of software is illegal on the school network and computer resources. Do not attempt to download software from any of the School's computers without teachers directions. 6. Keep school computers and the local network performance efficient and virus-free Save files to a removable disk or to your cloud account, and not onto the hard drive of any School computer. Keep all personal devices connecting wirelessly to the School s network free of viruses. Examples of unacceptable computer use include, but is not limited to: using a personal device, such as a USB drive to connect to the School s network or computers to download, upload, share, copy or save games for personal use without teachers specific permission, playing online games, music and videos on the School network during class time is not permitted without teachers specific permission, using , instant chat, messaging or social networking sites during class time without teachers instruction, linking private websites to the School s website without teachers permission, using school computers, accounts and online forums to: create, copy or post a virus; send/receive using someone else s name or account; send messages that are sexist, racist, inflammatory, prejudicial or offensive; send messages that contain encoded/encrypted obscene language, graphics or attached graphic files; send or receive unsolicited chain letters, and use the Internet for gambling or illegal activities. It is important to note that students may be disciplined for their outside-school speech on social networking sites, such as Facebook if the form of speech or other media causes a disruption to the School s learning environment or community, or the rights of another student or staff member. Consequences: Infringement of these guidelines, failure to respect these privileges, rights or responsibilities will result in appropriate school disciplinary and/or legal action.

4 Computer Network and Internet Use Guidelines IMPORTANT information for Parent / Guardian The Hutchins School computer network and Internet connectivity offers extensive and unique resources to students, staff and the school community for educational purposes. These Guidelines supplement the Acceptable Use Agreement form that is an agreement signed by parents/guardians and students about students responsible use of the school network, including services, according to the School s Code of Conduct.* Online services, communication technologies and multimedia offer opportunities for students to: access, evaluate and share current information and experts in many fields, create, innovate, discover, explore and exchange cultural ideas and understanding, develop digital literacy and communication skills, participate in global education projects, learn and study in an independent or self-managed learning environment, and connect to the school s information services and resources from home. Teachers responsibilities In this partnership between parents, students and the School, the teaching staff will endeavour to: ensure that students have clearly defined tasks for using the online services and resources, provide appropriate levels of supervision, educate students about internet safety, intellectual property and copyright laws, provide students with an ethical understanding of academic integrity and issues with plagiarism, and educate students about the information handling skills of online research, including evaluating, verifying and citing the online sources of their information. The School s access to the Internet is filtered and managed by a content filtering solution for schools. Communication via cannot be guaranteed to be private. Use of the Internet and can be subject to random monitoring for security or network management checks. There are network management practices in place for granting and removing student access privileges, filtering Internet content and advising procedures for complaints which are not covered by the School s harassment policies. The School does prohibit access to some social networking websites where they have no educational value to the School s program. Privacy Students have a right to privacy and security of their computer files and communications as they do for other possessions. Any files stored on the School network remain the property of the School, for which the School has legal responsibility and reserves the right to check usage to maintain the integrity of the system. Safety The Internet has risks as well as opportunities. These risks include access to information that is unsuitable or inappropriate for children, contact with individuals whose behaviour is unfriendly or unacceptable, and exploitative commercial activities or marketing. Internet management services are used to enable students to participate safely in the global education environment. Intellectual Freedom Students have the right to search freely in appropriate areas for information. Teaching staff can be consulted if a student is in doubt as to the meaning of 'appropriate.' * In the Broadcasting Services Act (Online Services) 1999, students under the age of 18 can only access material on the Internet with the consent of a parent, teacher or other responsible adult.

5 Acceptable Use Agreement Form When I am using the information and communication technologies (ICTs) which include the computing facilities, the school network, the Internet, the interactive whiteboards, digital cameras, printers and scanners at The Hutchins School, I pledge to do so in a manner that is consistent with the School's aims and objectives. I undertake to abide by the Computer Network and Internet Use Guidelines six basic responsibilities: 1. I will keep my passwords to myself and not ask others to share their password. 2. I will back up and store my work on a USB, in my or in my personal folder on the intranet. 3. I will use ICTs co-operatively, with courtesy and avoid all forms of bullying and harassment. 4. I will be honest in my own work, acknowledging all other sources. 5. I will not use the School s equipment and network for anything that is against the law. 6. 7 eduroam trial for Years 9-12 Acceptable Use Agreement Form Addendum eduroam [education roaming] is a secure worldwide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. It allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain internet access. A joint UTAS and AARNet initiative allowed The Hutchins School staff and Senior School students to participate in a trial to access free wireless network services at co-operating university institutions and other participating education and research networks that offer the eduroam hotspot service. The eduroam website [ has a very brief video to explain the worldwide service. This service is extended to senior students at The Hutchins School on a controlled and trial basis. Although eduroam is based on the most secure encryption and authentication standards the local Computer Network and Internet Use Guidelines complies with the Broadcasting Services Act (Online Services) 1999 whereby students under the age of 18 can only access internet services with the consent of a parent, teacher or other responsible adult. In keeping with appropriate protocols, The Hutchins School requests your permission and approval to extend this service to your son/s for the trial participation to enable internet access at participating eduroam hotspots, such as some areas on the UTAS campus. Your signature to this extension for your son/s participation in this trial is presented as an addendum to the Computer Network and Internet Use Guidelines at The Hutchins School. It will facilitate your son's access to worldwide eduroam-enabled Wi-Fi hotspots for smart devices such as smart phones, ipod Touch, ipads, and wireless enabled tablets. If you require further information or assistance in this matter please contact the School and ask to speak with Dr Abell.
