1 Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Purpose As a teacher, I want to move students forward into the 21 st century learning environment. Many students already use technology to access information 24/7 and we are living in a world where information is immediate. As teachers, we must challenge students with rigorous standards set forth by the state. We must inspire and promote our students to achieve at their highest level. Many students already own personal devices that allow them to access information anytime and anywhere. I would like the opportunity for my students to use their personal devices for educational purposes. With their devices they can access apps, personal planning devices, and other educational tools maximizing the opportunity for great success in school. What Devices May Students Bring? Devices are privately owned wireless and portable electronic pieces of equipment. Devices include laptops, tablets, e-readers, i-touches, and smart phones. NO portable gaming devices are allowed, such as Nintendo DS or Playstation PSP, etc. Guidelines 1. Any student who wishes to use a personally owned electronic device must read and sign the districts acceptable use policy and my classroom policy on device use. 2. The student takes full responsibility for his or her device and keeps it with himself or herself at all times. The district, school and/or teachers are not responsible for the security of the device. 3. The student is responsible for the proper care of his or her personal device, including and cost of repair, replacement or any modifications needed to use the device at school. 4. The school and/or teacher reserves the right to inspect a student s personal device if there is reason to believe that the student has violated any classroom policies, school rules, the districts acceptable use policy or has engaged in other misconduct while using their personal device. 5. Violations of any classroom policies, school rules, the districts acceptable use policy or has engaged in other misconduct while using their personal device may result in the loss of use of the device in school and/or disciplinary action. 6. The student must comply with the teacher s request when asked to shut down and/or close the screen. 7. Personal devices should be charged prior to bringing it to school and shall be capable of running off its own battery while at school.
2 8. The districts technology department, school, and/or teacher will not be able to assist with any technical difficulty with the device. Any problems with the device are the students responsibility and not that of the district, school and/ or teacher. 9. Personal devices will NOT be used to Harassment or bullying through the use of any technological systems. Use of technology resources at school to create or distribute annoying, harassing, demeaning, libelous, bullying, threatening, or obscene messages, videos, or photos anywhere or to anyone is prohibited. Masquerading, spoofing, or pretending to be someone else is forbidden. As well as sending out , creating accounts, or posting messages or other online content (e.g. text, images, audio or video) in someone else s name. Anyone found harassing or bullying will lose the privilege of bring the device to school and/or be subject to further consequences. 9. The student may not use the devices to record, transmit or post photos or video of a person or persons at school. Nor can any images or video recorded at school be transmitted or posted at any time without the express permission of the teacher and building principal. 10. The student is not allowed to use the device to call, send or receive text messages, chat, and/or during the school day. 11. The student is not allowed to access Facebook or non-educational social media Facebook like sites during the school day. Edmodo is an acceptable educational website and will be allowed if the teacher deems necessary. 12. During school hours the student may only use their device to access classroom related activities. Students will not be allowed to play games, game apps, gaming sites and/or non-school related tasks or functions. 13. The students will use the UCS wireless network. Students login and password is required. Use of 3G & 4G wireless connections is not allowed. This will ensure that everything the student is working on is safe and monitored by Sonic Wall the districts filtering program.
3 Common Questions and Answers My student is bringing their device to school for instructional purposes. Will they have access to things the network provides? Your student will have access to the web through their device when the teacher deems necessary for instructional purposes. However, students will not have access to their student folders or printing through their own device. What if my student s device is stolen or damaged? What recourse can I take? Students bring their own device to school at their own risk, just like any other personal items brought to school. The teacher, school and the school district will not be held responsible if the electronic device or other items is lost, stolen, vandalized, damaged, or misplaced. If the electronic device or other items is lost, stolen, vandalized, damaged, or misplaced please let your teacher or administration know immediately so he/she can take the appropriate steps. Some devices have a device locator; it is recommended that you enable this feature if possible. It is also a good idea to record the device s serial number in case of theft. My student brought their device to school to use in every classroom, but some teachers said they couldn t use the device? The teacher in the classroom has the final say on procedures in the classroom. If he or she asks you not to use your device, then you should follow those directions. Access is only available, NOT guaranteed for each classroom situation. Will there be a penalty to my grade if I do not have my own device? NO. Devices are NEVER required and therefore, a grade cannot be taken. How will students be able to access the network? The network will be accessible under your setting options through the Wi-Fi connection on the device. Students will be prompted to enter their student log-in and password to access the Wi-Fi connection. Use of 3G & 4G wireless connections is not allowed. This will ensure that everything the student is working on is safe and monitored by BESS the districts filtering program.
4 How Will Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Work In Our Classroom? 1. In my classroom all the guidelines mentioned above will be strictly enforced. The guidelines, school, and the districts Acceptable Use Policy MUST be signed and returned before student can bring their own device. 2. I have a Red Light/ Green Light Policy. When the Green Light is on the board students may use their own device. When the Red Light is on the board students may not use their own device. 3. If a student is using their device while the Red Light is displayed on the board the student will be asked to power down their device and asked to place their device on my desk until the end of the hour. Repeat offenders of the Red Light policy will have further consequences up to and/or including revoked BYOD privileges, referral, or higher disciplinary actions. 4. As mentioned in the guidelines above the school and/or teacher reserves the right to inspect a student s personal device if there is reason to believe that the student has violated any classroom policies, school rules, the districts acceptable use policy or has engaged in other misconduct while using their personal device. 5. In my class BYOD will be used to further 21 st century learning. Using their own devices will help enhance and maximize the educational experience. There are apps that students can download for FREE to use in my classroom. Example of a few apps: Edmodo, My Homework, Flashcards, NASA, Graphing Calculator, Periodic Table, Metric Converter, and much more. 6. Students can use their own device to take notes or work on assignments if deem necessary by the teacher. 7. If there is a substitute teacher in my classroom, students may NOT use their own device. 8. Students must have their Digital Learning License visible when using their device.
