3 1. Introduction The integration digital devices and supporting information technology equipment into the classroom represents an exciting era at Melville Primary School. The project provides a wealth of rich educational resources and tools that, when used effectively, can deliver very positive teaching and learning outcomes. However, if the implementation of this new technology is not properly controlled there are certain pitfalls that students may encounter. The Department of Education supports students in the appropriate and safe use of their ipad. By alerting parents and students to potential dangers, developing guidelines and providing advice and support, the exposure of students to potential problems can be minimised. This document is aimed at parents and students who are involved in the Melville Primary School ipad Program and details the policy, guidelines and support strategies to ensure that students are able to make effective use of their ipad. 2. Description and purpose of the project The objective of the project is to implement a range of innovations that explore and exploit the latest in educational technology and provide the opportunity for learning at anytime, anywhere. To increase the momentum of this learn anywhere, anytime program, Melville Primary School is offering the opportunity for students to bring their own connectable digital device. Currently this device must be an ipad; personal notebook computers, tablets or smart phones are not approved as suitable devices for use at this school. A wireless network system was upgraded at Melville Primary School during Term The connectable devices link to a campus wide wireless network providing access to the internet, some curriculum materials services, as well as enabling communication between students. In this document you will receive an ipad Connectable Device Permission Letter to sign and return to the front office. 3. Responsibilities 3.1 The Role of Students Students must use their ipad and the school computer network responsibly. Communications on the information networks are often public and general school rules for student behaviour, conduct and standards will apply. When using their ipad and accessing school information resources students must follow the policy and guidelines detailed in this document. Students who fail to honour the ipad Acceptable Use Policy at Melville PS may forfeit use of their ipad and access to the Internet and/or school network. Students who fail to maintain a good, acceptable behaviour record may forfeit the Bring Your Own ipad privilege

4 3.2 The Role of Parents or Guardians Parents or guardians are required to take responsibility for conveying the importance of the policy guidelines in this document and other school policies to their children. They are also required to monitor their child s use of the ipad, especially at home, including access to media and information sources. It is a condition of accepting entry into the Bring Your Own ipad program that parents/guardians accept end of line responsibility for their child s proper use of the ipad. 3.3 The Role of Teaching Staff School teaching staff will monitor appropriate care of the ipad and use of the ipad in accessing curriculum information. They will also provide guidance and instruction to students in the appropriate use of such resources. This includes staff facilitating student access to information on their ipad in support of and to enrich the curriculum while taking into account the varied instructional needs, learning styles, abilities and developmental levels of students. 3.4 The role of the School Melville Primary School is committed to providing staff and students with the resources to ensure the success of this initiative. Our aim is for all staff and students to have access to digital resources and the relevant curriculum materials necessary to improve the educational development of every student. 4. Authorisation and Rules for home use Students must abide by the ipad Acceptable Use Policy and follow parental instruction. 5. Guidelines for Proper Care of ipad 5.1 Security and Storage At School At school students will need to keep their ipad with them at all times in the classroom. When out of the classroom secure storage facilities will be made available to them. 5.2 Loss or Damage It must be understood that the ipad is the responsibility of the student at all times and that Melville Primary School and the Department of Education cannot be held responsible for the loss of, theft of or damage to the ipad. It is highly recommended that both Apple Care and property insurance cover are provided for the ipad. 6. Data Management Saving or back up of data is the student s responsibility. Students should back up to itunes on another computer or save their work on the school s network. The school accepts no responsibility for the loss of any data. Staff will not accept data loss as an excuse for not handing in work on time.

5 7. Virus Protection If you haven't jailbroken your ipad, you should feel safe and secure that your ipad is virusclean and will likely remain so for the foreseeable future. 8. How Students Can Use their BYO ipad Our ipad Acceptable Use Policy is a written agreement that formally sets out the rules of use of software, apps, networks, printers and the Internet. All staff and students are accessing the Department of Education System and are bound by Department of Education rules of use. At Melville PS we have responsibility to make sure that the ipads are not used for any illegal purpose, and that they are used primarily as an educational tool. This means that when students install any of their own apps or games, they must abide by the censorship rating and the games or apps must be appropriately licensed; including paying a fee if this is what is required. Any files stored on the ipad must not breach copyright and the content must be appropriate. They are not to be used for torrent (peer to peer) sharing or anything that might be considered cyber bullying or accessing web sites unsuitable for classroom environment. This will be discussed in greater detail in the ipad Acceptable Use Policy. At Melville PS, we have planned an approach for the use of the ipad that will work for our school. If we find problems such as students being distracted from their work during class, or copyright laws potentially not being upheld, then we will review our policies and make whatever changes are needed. Students must understand that the school will monitor activities on the ipad, including Internet access and , and that Staff have the right to inspect the ipad and the Bring Your Own ipad privilege can be taken away from students at any time. 8.1 Internet Safety and Appropriate use When using the school network, the same measures currently taken to protect students will apply to the ipad. This includes filtering of sites and monitoring of student activity using Apple Remote Desktop and other monitoring software. Students must also abide by the ipad Acceptable Use Policy and understand that we will exercise our right to take away the Bring Your Own ipad privilege for a period of time if the Agreement is breached. Students must understand that regardless of how they use their ipad at home, at school it is an educational tool and they must not breach the ipad Acceptable Use Policy. Students must not deliberately enter or remain in any site that has any of the following content: Nudity, obscene language or discussion intended to provoke a sexual response Violence Information about committing any illegal activities Information about making or using weapons, booby traps, dangerous practical jokes or "revenge" activities

6 Students must not: Use material from other web sites unless they have permission from the person who created the material. If unsure, they should check with their teacher Access any other material that their parents or guardians have forbidden them to see. If students encounter any such site, they must immediately turn off the ipad and notify a teacher. They should not show the site to their friends first. Use other forms of connecting to the internet at school while they are part of this program. (eg internal 3G,4G, wireless hubs and dongles, etc) Students must: Only connect to the internet through the school s network. Computer operating systems and other software have been set up to maximise the usefulness of the ipad. Students are prohibited from: Bringing or downloading unauthorised programs, including games, to the school or run them on school computers. Online internet games are banned. Deleting, adding or altering any configuration files. Break software copyright. Copyright is to be observed at all times. It is illegal to copy or distribute school software. Illegal software from other sources is not to be copied to or installed on the school equipment. Deliberately introduce any virus or program that reduces system security or effectiveness. Bypassing the school proxy server. Attempting to log into the network with any user name or password that is not their own, or change any other person s password. Revealing their network password to anyone except the system administrator. Students are responsible for everything done using their accounts and everything on their ipad. Since passwords must be kept secret, no user may claim that another person entered their home directory and did anything to cause school rules to be broken. Using or possessing any program designed to reduce network security. Enter any other person s file directory or do anything whatsoever to any other person s files. Attempting to alter any person s access rights; or Storing the following types of files in their home directory: o Program files o Compressed files o Picture files, unless they are required by a subject o Obscene material pictures or text o Obscene filenames o Insulting material o Password protected files o Copyright material.

7 8.2 Access Security It is a condition of entry to the ipad program that students agree to the monitoring of all activities including their files and Internet accesses. Monitoring and Logging A log of all access to the internet including e mail may be maintained and periodically scanned to ensure that undesirable internet sites have not been accessed and that the content of e mail remains within the guidelines described in this document. 8.3 Internet Security It is the responsibility of individual students to ensure their behaviour does not contravene school rules or rules imposed by parents/guardians. The school is aware that definitions of "offensive" and "inappropriate" will vary considerably between cultures and individuals. The school administration will always have the last say in determining what is appropriate. 8.4 Social Networks and Chat Lines (Face Book, Tumblr, My Space, twitter, Skype, IRC, MIRC, MSN, ICQ etc) Real time chat programs and social networks (Face Book, MIRC, ICQ) may be used at home with the permission of parents however they are not to be used by students in class unless instructed to do so by a teacher.

Parents are asked to discuss this policy with their child before signing it. Responsibilities of the student Bring the ipad to school each day fully charged and fully functional. Regular backups of files will be made at home. Your ipad will be kept safe. It will be kept in your possession at all times while at school or secured locked room. The ipad is not to be loaned to anyone else. Take regular breaks when using the ipad for extended periods of time. Loss, damage and theft It must be understood that the ipad is the responsibility of the student at all times and that Melville Primary School and the Department of Education cannot be held responsible for the loss of, theft of or damage to the ipad. Stealing The school abides by copyright laws and expects students to do the same. The ipad is not to be used for illegally downloading or copying software, games, music, video or other material. There must be no illegal peer-to-peer file-sharing using BitTorrent or other means. Do not plagiarise i.e. present the work of others as your own. Games and music Playing games, listening to music, watching video, accessing websites not relevant to the lesson, or any other activity on the connectable device which is a distraction will not be tolerated during class time. This policy will be strictly monitored by the class teacher and remotely by other staff, and action will be taken if this policy is breached. The extent to which the student conducts these activities at home is the decision of the parent, but it is to be remembered the connectable device is primarily to be used as an educational tool. At all times games and audio visual material must not breach the appropriate censorship rating. The student is expected to make their password available to their teachers and parent if they need to examine the ipad.

9 Internet Use and Safety Never reveal personal information, addresses, phone numbers or those of fellow students and staff via the ipad or school network. Students will only connect to the internet through the school s network and students will not use other forms of connecting at school or bypass the school proxy while they are part of this program. (eg internal 3G,4G, wireless hubs and dongles, etc.) Students will not circumvent school Internet access control systems/settings (including using proxy anonymisers) to access unauthorised web sites. Do not use your ipad to access inappropriate websites. Students will not harass, threaten, intimidate or attack others, either through , social network sites, chat sites or other electronic means. If you become victim to this sort of behaviour, inform your parents and the school. Privacy Do not store anything on the ipad that you are not prepared to share with staff or your parents. Student activity on the ipad can be monitored at any time at school using monitoring software, and this may include remotely viewing and taking control of the desktop. School staff may request access to the ipad, including access to the Internet browser history, logs, caches and files and programs stored on the ipad, or Cloud. Staff may also install or delete software. The school cannot monitor use of the ipad outside of the school, and it is the responsibility of the parent to ensure it is used appropriately at home. Sanctions Sanctions for violation of this policy may include, but not be limited to, temporary or permanent withdrawal of the student from BYO ipad Connectable Device Program. This in effect means the ipad privilege will be taken away from the student for a period of time determined by the school.
