1 IBM United States Announcement , dated July 8, 2008 Preview: IBM WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition V7.0: Managed file transfer solution for reliable, secure, and auditable movement of files Description...2 Product positioning... 4 IBM Electronic Services...5 At a glance IBM WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition V7.0 will deliver an SOA-ready solution for managed file transfer that leverages the market-leading WebSphere MQ transport to move files between IT systems with reliability, security, and auditability. Planned capabilities include: Managed file transfer solution that does not require programming SOA-ready approach to managed file transfer, enabling files to be moved to an SOA infrastructure that includes universal messaging backbones and enterprise service buses (ESBs) Delivery of files reliably, using the proven WebSphere MQ transport, eliminating the need to depend on File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Automation and control of file movement between IT systems Log of transfer activity for audit purposes File transfers that are fully automated including scheduling and triggering transfers when file-related events occur Bulk transfer of files, regardless of their size Graphical interface for remotely configuring transfers and monitoring their progress Scripting support for programmatic control of transfers Support for a range of platforms including Microsoft Windows, Linux on x86, Sun Solaris, IBM AIX, HP-UX, and z/os Overview WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition V7.0 will deliver a reliable managed file transfer solution for moving files regardless of their size between IT systems without the need for programming. WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition V7.0, the newest member of the WebSphere MQ family of messaging products, will be offered as a product for distributed platforms and a product for z/os on the IBM System z platform. WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition V7.0 leverages WebSphere MQ messaging as its reliable transport mechanism for moving files. This product will enable files to be moved that are larger than maximum individual WebSphere MQ message sizes. A log of file movements enables organizations to demonstrate that business data in files is transferred with integrity from source to target file system. Graphical configuration tooling, integrated with WebSphere MQ Explorer, will enable quick and easy definition of transfers without the need for programming. IBM United States Announcement IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 1

2 On distributed platforms, WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition V7.0 will include a full WebSphere MQ V7.0 license, delivering both file-oriented and message-oriented styles of data movement. (IBM WebSphere MQ for z/os will be a prerequisite for IBM WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition for z/os. A separate license of WebSphere MQ for z/os will be required for this product on the System z platform.) This will enable organizations that are running separate mechanisms for file and message traffic to consolidate on a single reliable transport capable of handling both file and message traffic. Using a single reliable backbone can help achieve these operational efficiencies by reducing the need to deploy and manage separate parallel networks for messages and files. With the addition of WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition V7.0, the WebSphere MQ family expands its role as the universal messaging backbone for SOA. It can be a unifying connectivity solution that brings together file-oriented, message-oriented, service-oriented, and event-oriented applications and Web 2.0 traffic. IBM invites clients and partners to participate in an Early Access Program. The agile delivery approach that IBM is taking to the development of WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition V7.0 enables you to apply to obtain access to prerelease code iterations to gain experience with the technology and to give early feedback. To apply to participate in the Early Access Program for this offering, contact your local IBM representative or send an to filetransfer@uk.ibm.com. For more information about IBM Early Access Programs through IBM BetaWorks, visit Planned availability Fourth quarter 2008 Previews provide insight into IBM plans and direction. Availability, prices, ordering information, and terms and conditions will be provided when the product is announced. Description IBM WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition V7.0 will deliver a reliable transport for moving files between IT systems. It will provide a managed file transfer (MFT) solution that will enable files to be reliably transferred regardless of their size with an audit log across a flexible backbone. Many organizations devote valuable IT resources to building and maintaining systems in-house for moving files between applications. Most of these solutions are based on FTP because of its simplicity and freely available mechanism. While FTP is well-suited for file sharing, where several applications access an occasionally updated, centrally managed source file, many organizations are seeking alternatives for files that are moved between applications as part of business transactions. As volumes of transfers rapidly grow, and with increased consequences for errors in business data being incorrectly transferred, having a reliable, flexible, cost-effective solution for managed file transfer is increasingly critical for organizations of all sizes. Industry analysts note the proliferation of home-grown FTP-based approaches to moving files: "Our shocking research finding was that custom-built, in-house, hard-coded AI (application integration) solutions (a majority using free FTP software) have been the most widely used approach. Such links take two to four times as much time and effort to build... and need similar multifold maintenance and support efforts. They are also insecure, fragile, and vulnerable. Enterprises relying heavily on this approach (as it seems many still do) have built intrinsically weak links into their application infrastructure. They have also wasted precious development and support resources needlessly." Visit ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/sof tware/websphere/pdf/ibmenterpr iseintegrationsecondedition.pdf WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition V7.0 will deliver an SOA-ready managed file transfer solution that can replace home-grown and FTP-based approaches to file movement. Drivers towards reliable managed file transfer solutions include: Emergence of SOA, driving business demand for more flexible, agile IT systems that can adapt quickly in response to changing business realities. 3 Organization-wide deployment of an ESB, coupled with the need to apply ESB mediation, transformation, and enrichment capabilities to files. Globalization, requiring competitive organizations to reduce the batch window needed to collect or synchronize information between locations to ensure an up-to-date view of the business is always accessible or to cope with the increasing volume of data that must be processed overnight. Supply-chain integration concerns that intensify the need for reliable, auditable exchange between organizations to ensure partner agreements are kept and errors can be minimized. Increase of regulatory compliance and government legislation that obliges businesses to demonstrate the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting or the handling of sensitive information, in part by being able to show that data is transferred with integrity around their organization. This requires IT systems to keep accurate, up-to-date records of transactions, to resolve issues that would compromise the integrity of data in question and demonstrate this in audits. Examples include Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID), or industry-specific directives such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Pressures to increase IT department efficiencies to devote more time to innovations that drive the unique advantage for the business, reduce time spent reengineering solutions, and focus efforts on extending infrastructure with value-add capabilities that increase competitive advantage. WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition V7.0 will offer the following: Robust transport for files by leveraging the proven WebSphere MQ transport. This can help remove the need to write and manage additional software in-house to attempt to detect transfer failures, retry transfers, and resolve duplicate transmissions. It removes the need to develop code to detect when files have been partially transmitted. This can help organizations avoid the spiralling development and maintenance costs often associated with extending FTP to provide reliability, security, and auditability. Ability to log transfer activity for audit purposes. This can help improve your ability to demonstrate the integrity of file data as it is exchanged between IT systems. Distributed backbone for file movement that can be more flexible than point-to-point FTP transfer approaches, helping to reduce the time, effort, and risk associated with making changes to applications and to the file transfers between them. Broad platform coverage across distributed platforms as well as support for z/os on the System z platform. Graphical tooling, based on Eclipse, to enable nonprogrammers to rapidly and easily configure file transfers. There will be no need to write code or learn an API in order to configure transfers. The graphical tooling will enable remote configuration of transfers. A scripting language will offer advanced users programmatic control of transfers. File transfer activity will be automated and transferred from source file system to target file system. Transfers can be scheduled to occur at predetermined times or triggered by a range of file-related events. WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition V7.0 will deliver support for transfers to and from systems running WebSphere MQ V7.0 and the previous release, WebSphere MQ V6.0. At least one WebSphere MQ V7.0 server queue manager (supplied with the product) must be deployed within a WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition network. This WebSphere MQ V7.0 server queue manager acts as a coordination center for logging audit data and uses its publish and subscribe capability to broadcast audit and file transfer status information. WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition V7.0 enables files to be transferred reliably to and from ESBs. This enables ESB capabilities including mediation, transforming, and routing to be applied to files. WebSphere Message Broker V6.1 offers additional file processing capabilities to enable transformation, mediation, and enrichment that are specifically designed for file data. It has native support for handling large files that simplifies the processing of large, repeating, complex file records without using excessive storage. Files can be delivered to WebSphere Message Broker V6.1 using FTP or, as a managed file transfer, using WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition V7.0. For more details on file processing capabilities in WebSphere Message Broker, refer to Software Announcements , dated October 9, 2007, and , dated October 9, IBM United States Announcement IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 3
