Guilford County Schools Maintenance Department Custodial Support Daily Restroom Cleaning Procedure A clean restroom is important to a school and should be a high priority due to the health, safety and psychological effect it has on people. A clean restroom makes the strongest initial impression at a school. Maintaining the restroom should be one of the top priorities in your daily cleaning. A restroom houses germs that cause illnesses and offensive odors. Odors are caused by germs and bacteria that breed together. Germs and bacteria breed around pipes, underneath sinks, outside of toilet bowls or urinals and floor drains. Following the cleaning procedure outline will enable the District custodial staff to better combat the negative attributes associated with an unclean restroom. Prior to cleaning restrooms, the custodians should ensure that they have the proper equipment and sufficient supplies. Supplies. Supplies needed on your custodian cart: A-456-II Disinfectant Cleaner Bowl Swab Plunger Putty Knife Mop Bucket and Wringer Wet Mop Doodlebug Extension Duster 1 Corn broom Wet Floor Sign Dust Pan Paper Supplies (single or jumbo toilet tissue, roll paper towels) Antiseptic Hand Soap Wiping Cloths Glass Cleaner #52 Trash Can Liners Plastic pail Gong Brush Disposable non-powder Rubber gloves, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Cream Cleanser can use as intermittent product but recommend using A-456-II daily.

Equipment Used Custodial Cart: The custodial cart is an extension of the custodial room, therefore; it will be used to transport cleaning equipment and materials from room to room. Your time will be limited so it is important that your cart is clean and organized at all times. Remember that a custodial cart can fill three basic maintenance needs: 1. Transporting cleaning materials and supplies 2. Distribution of supplies 3. Collection of supplies or refuse Only necessary materials/supplies should be on the cart. It s up to the user or the supervisor to decide what those necessary items are. Follow this simple rule: Carts should be kept clean and organized at all times. Carts should always be stocked for the next day. A visual inspection should be done each day before you begin the task of cleaning your site. This will ensure that you have each item needed to properly clean areas. How to keep your cart organized: Put the chemicals on the top shelf of your cart in such a way that the ones you use most often are where you get to them easily. Store paper products and liquid soap on lower shelf. Hang the dust pan from the cart. Put your tools in a place so that you can get to them. The lower shelf is good for the containers you will use to clean your restrooms. Vacuum cleaner should be placed on the bottom shelf. The mop bucket can be pushed along beside the cart. Make sure the bucket has clean water and the mop has been cleaned. Be sure to use trash liners in the large garbage can that you use and carry extras because you will need them. A Custodial Cart

Prior to entering the restroom, knock on the restroom door and announce yourself if you are of a different gender than that of the restroom you are entering by shouting, Custodian, I need to clean the restroom. Position the cart near the door, prop open the door with a doorstop and set-up your WET FLOOR sign in front of the restroom doorway. Step 1: Pre-treat Commodes, Urinals, Sinks, Fixtures and Countertops with Disinfectant a. Remove foreign matter from the urinals and commodes and flush them. b. Spray the inside and outsides of the urinals with the A-456-II disinfectant cleaner and let sit. c. Spray both sides of all of the commode seats, the inside and outside of the commode, and the fixtures with A-456-II and let sit. d. Spray sinks, fixtures and countertops with A-456-II and let sit. The solution needs about 7 10 minutes to kill the bacteria (use as directed on label). Step 2: Refill and Clean Dispensers a. Replace paper towels, toilet tissue (jumbo rolls for middle and high schools and single rolls for elementary schools) b. Refill the soap dispensers. c. Damp wipe the exterior surfaces of all dispensers with A-456-II disinfectant cleaner to clean. Step 3: Empty Trash. Never, at any time, should you reach into a wastebasket. a. Empty all wastebaskets in the restroom. Trash should be emptied into a designated trash dumpster. b. Replace obviously soiled or torn trash liners. Always have at least 5 liners in your wastebasket at all times.

c. Damp wipe the exterior (interior as needed) of the wastebasket with A-456-II disinfectant cleaner to remove markings and soil. Step 4: Clean Mirrors, Glass and Window Sills a. Damp wipe surface with glass cleaner #52. b. Dry with wiping cloth or paper towel, then use additional glass cleaner #52 to remove streaks. Step 5: Clean and Disinfect Sinks, Countertops, Fixtures, and High Touch Points a. Use a doodlebug or cloth to clean the sinks, countertops, fixtures and the wall around the sinks with A-456-II disinfectant cleaner (reapply as necessary) b. Polish all chrome to a shine. c. Damp wipe high touch points: Door handles Light switches Step 6: Spot Clean a. Spot clean walls if any visible soil is present with A-456-II disinfectant cleaner (reapply as needed) b. Damp wipe vents Step 7: Clean and Disinfect Urinals a. Use a bowl swab to scrub the interior, first in the clockwise direction, then in the counterclockwise direction. b. Next, scrub the exterior surfaces, including the piping under the urinals, flushing fixtures with a doodlebug or cloth and the A-456-II disinfectant cleaner (reapply product as needed). c. Flush the urinals after this effort is completed. Step 8: Clean and Disinfect Commodes and Partitions a. Press brush under the rim of the commode. Clean the entire commode inside with the bowl swab using a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. b. Use clean cloth or doodlebug to clean the commode seat, top and bottom, the outside of the commode, the pipes, around the commode base and the wall around the commode with A-456-II disinfectant cleaner. c. Polish all chrome to a shine. d. Rinse the seat surface with clean water. e. Always leave toilet seats up when clean. f. Flush the commode after this effort is completed. g. Always stay in the squatting position from one bowl to the next, and then straighten up your position to wipe the top of the next bowl. This will save time and effort for you. h. Wipe down partition surfaces, hinges, door latches and tops. This will prevent permanent damage from urine splatters. i. Always start from bottom to prevent streaking.

j. In order to discourage graffiti writing on the partitions, always remove the writing right away. In older buildings, it may be necessary to paint the stalls frequently to maintain desired level of appearance. k. Change cloth for every commode to prevent cross contamination Step 9: Sweep the Floor a. Always start from the farthest corner in the restroom. b. Using the broom identified for restroom cleaning, sweep the floor. Ensure debris is removed from all corners and tight areas. c. Never sweep trash into corridor or other adjoining areas. d. Use your dust pan and counter brush to pick up trash and dispose of the debris in the trash can on the cart used to collect such debris. e. Use a putty knife to remove gum or tar. Step 10: Damp Mop the Floor a. Fill your mop bucket with Ecolab A-456-II disinfectant cleaner solution. b. Mount the wringer on the side of the pail. c. Agitate the solution several times with your mop, and then make sure you ring all excess water from the mop with your wringer. d. Starting from the farthest corner away from the door, mop the solution on the floor with a damp mop using the disinfectant solution. e. Always mop in an S shape process as outlined in the Figure S Diagram below. S - SHAPE MOPPING DIAGRAM

f. Mop behind door and borders, first using the solution in your bucket; wring out the mop often. Extra scrubbing will be needed around commode and urinals. Be careful not to splash baseboard and not to walk on recently mopped surfaces in order to avoid contamination. g. Never flood the floor with water; it may cause you to fall. h. Empty the cleaning water into the floor drain. Step 11: Disinfect Drains in Restrooms Floors. a. Pour some A-456-II in the drain. This kills bacteria that grows in the drains. b. Scrub around the drain with your swab. Spray the drain surfaces with the A- 456-II disinfectant cleaner. The solution needs about 7 10 minutes to kill the bacteria (use as directed on label). Step 12: Inspect for Quality control a. Check off each completed step using inspection form. Important Facts: a. Never remove signs until floor is completely dry. b. Never use the restroom mop outside of the restroom. Crosscontamination, which creates germs, illnesses and odors, can occur. c. Be sure to wash hands after cleaning each restroom. This will help eliminate the spread of germs from one restroom to another. d. Remember to always clean your restroom equipment before storing. Procedures developed in conjunction with ECOLAB
