1 Instructions for Summer Reading 1. Choose a grade level appropriate book to read. You may choose from the suggested list or get your own, but you must have the correct reading level. DO NOT WAIT AND TRY TO DO THE SUMMER READING ALL AT ONCE. This is to be spaced out over the summer. 2. Get a notebook of primary grid paper. You can find these at office supply stores. If your child writes in large letters, you may want to get more than one. 3. After your child reads a chapter in his/her book, they will go back and analyze the chapter using learned skills. There are forms attached. You can print them out or your child can just write the form onto his/her notebook. Finally, your child will write about the chapter. 4. You repeat these steps for each chapter of the book. 5. Your child will make a project about the book when he or she is done. Perhaps he/she will draw scenes from a favorite part of the book, or build a diorama of the story or a subject in the book. For instance, if the book is Mummies and Pyramids, your child might make a diorama of the Egyptian pyramids. 6. Only one book is required. Your child may do more than one book if he or she would like to do so. My child s grade level equivalent (G.L.E.) reading level is : Find a book at this level. Not sure of the level? Check on an internet search engine for the grade reading level of the book. List the name of the book. Be careful with chapter books. Different books are at different reading levels.

4 Starting the Process A. Put your name in the front and back of the Notebook. Try not to lose or destroy the covers or papers within. Keep it in a safe place. B. Write down the following information from your book: Reading Level (The reading level can be listed by any of the following methods: grade level, DRA LEVEL, SRI Reading Level or Lexile. C. You must write down the following information: title, author(s), illustrator(s) D. CHAPTER INFORMATION Write down the chapter number, for example Chapter 1. Then write down the category number (below) if there is any new information in this chapter. 1. Characters- who are the main and minor characters in this chapter? Are there any new ones to add? 2. What is the heading of the chapter? What is the setting? 3. What is the main idea of the chapter or the biggest problem in this chapter? 4. Was there any information that was inferred through pictures or words? What is your conclusion from these inferences? For example: the picture show s his (Fred s) face red, it says he stomps off. I think that Fred is angry. 5. Spelling Words You will choose a total of five different words from each chapter. a. Spell the word, b. Separate the word into syllables. Tell how many syllables there are (1) (2) or (3) etc. Identify the types of syllables or phonetic rules being used in the word. You choose which applies. Here are some examples: syllables: cvc, cvce, prefix, root, suffix, welded sounds (ing) Phonetic rules: diagraph or team, r controlled vowels, caution or stop and think about it vowels. is the best is the rest, y at the end as an /i/ or /e/ sound. 6. Vocabulary Words choose two words from each chapter. Define the word use the dictionary! Keep those dictionary skills sharp. Use the word in a sentence and write it down. 7. Was there an idea or subject mentioned in the chapter that you would like to know more about? 8. Write a paragraph about the chapter. You might consider writing about: What did you like most in this chapter? What didn t you like in the chapter? Did it remind you of another story or something that happened in your own life?
5 Repeat for each chapter of the book. When you are done do a project of your choosing on the book. Book Information Title: Author(s): Illustrator: 1. Characters (You can add to this list as you read.) Main Characters: Minor Characters: How would you describe the main characters in this chapter?
6 Chapters 2. What is the number and heading of the chapter? How was the title or heading related to the chapter? What was the setting? Did the setting change? 3. Write a summary of either the main idea of the chapter or write about the problem and/or solution presented in this chapter only.
7 4. Was there any information, in this chapter, that was inferred through pictures or words? (You can say picture or write a quote. Remember to put the page number. 11 After reading the whole book, do a project about the book. You might want to create drawings for each chapter of the book and put your pictures into a book format. You could also build a diorama about the story. Perhaps you would like to make puppets and settings for retelling the story. Choose one and turn it in with your report.
