2 Brief Abstract The Sports Management concentration was approved, and offered, in the Health/Physical Ed. Dept. and Tourism and Hospitality Depts. at Kingsborough Community College for the first time in fall 21. As a co-offered concentration in two separate departments, there are many academic items the coordinators of the program need to address. As the concentration stands now, there are only two courses, but a third course must be added. The program coordinators have to decide if the third course should be one that contains experiential learning methodology, specifically the development of a Virtual Enterprise course for Sports Management. This is a very important decision and the research may determine if sports management will ever be considered as a stand-alone major. Funding this project would enable the coordinators to make a better decision as to whether or not VE should be added to the concentration. In addition, the funding would result in a publication in a refereed journal. 6 Developing a Sports Management Major at CUNY: Experiential Learning vs. Traditional Courses in Curriculum Development Sports Management at KCC The academic discipline of sports management was offered to students as an area of concentration at Kingsborough Community College for the first time in fall of 21. The concentration is co-offered in the Health/Physical Education and Tourism and Hospitality Departments respectively. The concentration consists of two specialization courses of: TAH 7: Introduction to Sports Management and TAH-46: Sport Facility/Venue Management. The concentration was approved with the understanding that if the program could grow, it could lead to a stand-alone major. Currently, there is no sports management major at any CUNY division. The principal investigator of this grant proposal is a Doctor of Sports Management, and created the curriculum for the two concentration courses. It is his contention that in order to grow the program, dynamic courses should be offered to entice students into the concentration. However, the question remains whether the added course should be an experiential methodology course, or a traditional course found in most 4- year sports management programs. This proposed study is necessary in order to make a better decision on which course to add to the concentration in order to grow the program. The proposed course is Virtual Enterprise (VE), an experiential learning methodology wherein students own and operate their own fictitious businesses. For sports management students, they would obviously run a fictitious, sports-related business. VE methodology has been utilized at CUNY since 22, when the Institute for Virtual Enterprise became a CUNY Special Initiative. Experiential learning has been a focus of attention of academics in the past decade. The Secretary's Commission on Acquiring the Necessary Skills (SCANS) Report as well as the project concerning 21st Century Learning Outcomes have focused on the skills that students need in order to perform successfully in the real world. This includes career areas such as sports management. Problem Statement and Purpose The research hypothesis examined by this researcher will examine student and sport management chairperson attitudes to adding a sports-related Virtual Enterprise course or a traditional course to the sports management concentration. The purpose of the study is to make a better decision on which course to add to the concentration in order to grow the program. This study is important for CUNY, and other institutions that are developing sports management curricula. Project Design and Methodology The project consists of administering two surveys to two populations; one of current KCC sports management students, the other Department Chairperson s of 4-year sports management programs in the NYC area. The KCC sports management students will be interviewed and asked their preferences for adding an additional course to the program. KCC students will be surveyed on their preferences as well as their attitudes
7 towards their self-efficacy into being able to handle an experiential learning methodology. The second survey consists of surveying Department Chairperson s in 4-year sports management programs in the NYC area. This group will be surveyed on their attitudes toward adding an experiential learning class to a sports management program versus a traditional course. Additional survey questions will include whether an experiential course would transfer into a 4-year program. The results from this group are very important in determining whether to add a traditional course that will transfer vs. an experiential course that may be beneficial, but not necessarily transfer. As a back-up, focus groups may be used by the PI if there is not enough participation from either group. Traditionally, focus groups have been used for marketing purposes, but the use of focus groups has come into favor in the academic world. The focus group assembled will be a small representative number of the sports management students at KCC from both departments that offer the sports management concentration. The questions asked will be approved by Human Subjects if the need for a focus group arises. After the surveys, and or focus groups, are complete, an analysis of the results will be undertaken. Statistical analysis using SPSS software will analyze the results from both groups and hopefully determine which type of course is the best to add to the sports management concentration at KCC. Other Considerations/End Results The data collected from these surveys will enable the coordinators of the sports management program at KCC make a better decision as to which course to add to the concentration. The decision is important to growing the program at KCC as well as possibly establishing the foundations of a sports management degree program for CUNY. Furthermore, the results obtained will assist any researcher interested in developing sports management curricula. While the results will impact the sports management curriculum at KCC immediately, they will also aid in sports management curricula development in general. If it is determined that an experiential course would be beneficial, those results may show cause to CUNY administers to develop a stand-alone major in sports management. The results will definitely assist other researchers who are contemplating the addition of experiential learning courses into sports management programs. This will enhance any existing research on sports management curricula, and definitely result in a publication in a sports management journal. The PI has a proven track record of publication in sports management journals and has previous published an article as a result of PSC-CUNY funding back in 24. Finally, the PI is so convinced that this research is necessary that he is willing to forgo any salary or release time for himself in order to get this study approved. As you will note, the budget is comprised of the supplies and materials he will need to conduct the research, as well as the research assistance he will need in concluding the research. This includes a software program, publication preparation as well as research assistant stipends. The researcher also believes this will aid junior researchers in developing their skills, an ancillary advantage to approving this study.
