1 CHRISTMAS GREETINGS A Ranger / Journal Special Edition DIVINE Christmas divinity makers find joy in sweet work and seasonal camaraderie By Katie Roenigk and Eric Blom Staff Writers Members of the congregation at United Methodist Church were busy this month preparing for their annual Christmas Bazaar at United Methodist Church, one of several holiday-themed events this season. On Dec. 4, nine women made divinity candy at UMC, preparing several batches of different flavors including mint, peppermint, almond, lemon, maple nut, vanilla and vanilla nut. It s just easier when you have five, six, seven people doing it, volunteer Alice McLean said. I guess it s just a way for all of us to feel like we re doing something worthwhile in the world. The candy was cooled, cut and bagged for the annual holiday event Dec. 7. At right, Leda Lester, left, and Nancy Kindle checked to see if their batch of mint-flavored divinity had firmed up enough to be formed into balls. Several women on the candy-making team have been volunteering for the bazaar since the 1960s. It s one of Fremont County s biggest holiday food and craft fairs every year. Experienced team Some of the women said they have been helping with the bazaar for more than 40 years. They chatted happily while they bustled about the kitchen, stirring the confection-in-progress that bubbled on the kitchen stove. Noreen Parkhurst said the process begins with a cooked mixture of sugar and corn syrup, which is combined with egg whites and stirred until it reaches the right texture. Next, the substance goes into a standing mixer and is blended with other ingredients like lemons and almonds depending on the flavor of each batch. When it gets thick, we spoon it out on the table to dry, Parkhurst said. Leda Lester said the candy has to be able to hold a peak to show it is stiff enough to be formed into balls. It often takes a little extra time to reach the perfect consistency. It s not pleasing me yet, she said as she stirred her second-tolast batch of the day. ALICE MCLEAN Candy maker for the Methodist Church bazaar to the table. They excitedly gathered around the mixing bowl, bringing with them several large trays lined with wax paper. Each woman grabbed two spoons, using one of the utensils to grab some of the goo and the other to scrape the tablespoonsized lumps onto the waiting trays. Once all of the confection was removed from the bowl, the women licked their fingers clean. Parkhurst said another group of volunteers would make sure each piece of candy was placed in an individual wrapper. More food Divinity was far from the only holiday sweet awaiting customers. The bazaar also featured peanut brittle, hard candy and almond bark as well as cookies, divinity and brownies not to mention the well-known homemade noodles that are an annual mainstay. It has a really intimate feel about it, Warpness said. A lot of people come for the coffee and stay clear through lunch. It s a great time for fellowship and to see people maybe you haven t seen in a while. UMC also orders brooms and knives for interested buyers, and Warpness said several churchgoers made homemade crafts to sell during the bazaar. The money raised during the event supports church missions. Casino supplies gifts for children on the nice list K Volunteers delivered roughly 800 toys this year. By Alejandra Silva Staff Writer Wind River Hotel and Casino employees made their gift giving rounds Monday as they purchased children s toys and delivered them to the Arapahoe and Riverton Department of Family Services offices and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families office in Arapahoe. From there, office staff will wrap the gifts and distribute them to the families they serve. The casino chose to repeat its annual act of generosity and give needy children in the community the gifts they ve asked Santa Claus for, said casino IT director Robert Duran. Funds for the toys were raised through Hoops for Tots, a charity basketball tournament, and Slots for Tots, a casino slot tournament that raised $2,500, Duran said. That amount was then matched by the casino. This year, more than $8,000 was raised and roughly 800 toys were delivered. Employees from the casino volunteered their time Monday to shop for a variety of presents for children of different ages and deliver them later in the day. We really wanted to build motivation and show (children) the gift of giving, Duran said. And make them aware that there are people out there that care about them.

19 12 Days of Christmas would cost $27,393 By Ricardo Lopez McClatchy Newspapers Eyeing the set of gifts referenced in the 12 Days of Christmas for your true love? The set of gifts, which include milking maids, pear trees and French hens, will cost you $27,393, according to a tongue-incheek price index. That s up 7.7 percent from last year, according to PNC Wealth Management, the firm that for 30 years has compiled the Christmas Price Index. Since the index was first compiled in 1983, year-over-year inflation increases have averaged 2.9 percent. What accounts for the price boost? The cost of labor, according to analysis from Forbes Magazine. Those ladies dance for a lot more this year, Forbes reports. The cost of the nine ladies dancing is $7,553 in 2013, a 20 percent increase from 2012, according to PHILDANCO, a modern dance company in Philadelphia.
