11 USING YOUR SEWING MACHINE Power supply preutions Be sure to oserve the following preutions onerning the power supply. WARNING Use only regulr household eletriity for the power soure. Using other power soures my result in fire, eletri shok, or dmge to the mhine. Mke sure tht the plugs on the power ord re firmly inserted into the eletril outlet nd the power supply jk on the mhine. Do not insert the plug on the power ord into n eletril outlet tht is in poor ondition. Turn off the min power nd remove the plug in the following irumstnes: When you re wy from the mhine After using the mhine When the power fils during use When the mhine does not operte orretly due to d onnetion or disonnetion During eletril storms Use only the power ord inluded with this mhine. Do not use extension ords or multi-plug dpters with mny other pplines plugged in to them. Fire or eletri shok my result. Do not touh the plug with wet hnds. Eletri shok my result. When unplugging the mhine, lwys turn off the min power first. Alwys grsp the plug to remove it from the outlet. Pulling on the ord my dmge the ord, or led to fire or eletri shok. The sewing lmp goes off when the mhine is turned off. te If power outge ours while the sewing mhine is eing operted, turn off the sewing mhine nd unplug the power supply ord. When restrting the sewing mhine, follow the neessry proedure to orretly operte the mhine. (For U.S.A. only) This ppline hs polrized plug (one lde wider thn the other). To redue the risk of eletri shok, this plug is intended to fit in polrized outlet only one wy. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. 12 KNOWING YOUR SEWING MACHINE Foot ontroller Insert the foot ontroller plug into its jk/soket on the rer side of the sewing mhine. Sewing speed ontroller (for s equipped with the sewing speed ontroller) Slide the sewing speed ontroller to the left or right to selet the desired sewing speed. Slide the sewing speed ontroller to the left to sew t slower speed, or slide the speed ontroller to the right to sew t fster speed. Foot ontroller jk/soket When onneting the foot ontroller, e sure to turn off the sewing mhine in order to prevent the mhine from identlly eing strted. When you press the foot ontroller down lightly, the mhine will run t low speed. When you press hrder, the mhine s speed will inrese. When you tke your foot off the foot ontroller, the mhine will stop. Slower Sewing speed ontroller The speed set using the sewing speed ontroller is the foot ontroller s mximum sewing speed. Chnging the needle stop position rmlly, the sewing mhine is set to leve the needle in the fri when sewing is stopped. Insted, the mhine n e set to leve the needle rised when sewing is stopped. Turn off the sewing mhine. Fster You should mke sure tht nothing is pled on the foot ontroller when the mhine is not in use. Do not llow piees of loth nd dust to uild up on the foot ontroller. Doing so ould use fire or n eletri shok. Hold down the side of (stith seletion key) on the left nd turn on the sewing mhine. After turning on the sewing mhine, relese the side of (stith seletion key). te When the foot ontroller is plugged in, the strt/stop utton nnot e used to strt sewing (only for s equipped with the strt/stop utton). The needle stop position hnges to the rised position. Memo Perform the sme opertion to hnge the needle stop position to the lowered position. 0
13 Chnging the initil needle position rmlly, the stright stith (left needle position) is utomtilly seleted when the sewing mhine is turned on. The mhine n e set so tht the stright stith (enter needle position) is utomtilly seleted when it is turned on. Turn off the sewing mhine. Cnelling the opertion eep (for s equipped with the opertion eep) When the sewing mhine is purhsed, it is set to eep eh time key is pressed. This setting n e hnged so tht the mhine does not eep. Turn off the sewing mhine. Hold down the + side of (stith seletion key) on the left nd turn on the sewing mhine. After turning on the sewing mhine, relese the + side of (stith seletion key). Hold down the side of (stith width djustment key) nd turn on the sewing mhine. After turning on the sewing mhine, relese the - side of (stith width djustment key). The initil needle position hnges to the enter needle position. Memo The speified initil needle position is mintined even fter the mhine is turned off. Perform the sme opertion to hnge the initil needle position to the left needle position. The mhine is now set so tht it will not eep.
14 KNOWING YOUR SEWING MACHINE THREADING THE MACHINE Winding the oin This setion desries how to wind the thred onto the oin. For detils on the fst oin winding, see pge 4. Pulling it in s fr s possile. Pre-tension disk Boin winder shft Boin Only use oins (prt ode: SA56, SFB) tht hve een designed for this sewing mhine. Using other oins my use dmge to the mhine. We designed the oin tht omes with this mhine. If you use oins from other s, the mhine will not work properly. Only use the oin tht omes with this mhine or oins of the sme type (prt ode: SA56, SFB). Atul size.5 mm (7/6 inh) This Other s Pull up the spool pin s fr s possile, nd then put spool of thred on this pin. Pss the thred round the pre-tension disk. d Put the oin onto the oin winder shft nd slide the oin winder shft to the right. Turn the oin lokwise, y hnd, until the spring on the shft slides into the groove of the oin. If the spool of thred is not in the right ple, the thred my tngle on the spool pin. Pss the end of the thred through the hole on the oin from the inside of the oin. 2 Spring on the shft Groove of the oin Turn on the sewing mhine. e 2
15 While holding the end of the thred, gently f press the foot ontroller or press (strt/ stop utton) (for s equipped with the strt/stop utton) to wind the thred round the oin few times. Then stop the mhine. te If the sewing mhine is to e operted using the foot ontroller, onnet the foot ontroller efore turning on the mhine. When the foot ontroller is plugged in, the strt/stop utton nnot e used to strt sewing (only for s equipped with the strt/stop utton). Press the foot ontroller or press (strt/ i stop utton) (for s equipped with the strt/stop utton) to strt. When the oin seems full nd egins j spinning slowly, tke your foot off the foot ontroller or press (strt/stop utton) (for s equipped with the strt/stop utton). k l Cut the thred, slide the oin winder shft to the left nd remove the oin. Slide the sewing speed ontroller k to its originl position (for s equipped with the sewing speed ontroller). Trim the exess thred ove the oin. g Mke sure you follow the instrutions refully. If you do not ut the thred ompletely, nd the oin is wound, when the thred runs low it my tngle round the oin nd use the needle to rek. Slide the sewing speed ontroller to the right h (to set the speed to fst) (for s equipped with the sewing speed ontroller). Memo When the sewing mhine is strted or the hndwheel is turned fter winding the thred round the oin, the mhine will mke liking sound; this is not mlfuntion. 16 KNOWING YOUR SEWING MACHINE For s equipped with the fst oin winding system Follow steps through 2 of the proedure in Winding the oin to pss the thred round the pre-tension disk (pge 2). f Slide the sewing speed ontroller to the right (to set the speed to fst) (for s equipped with the sewing speed ontroller). Ple the oin on the oin winder shft so tht the spring on the shft fits into the noth in the oin. Sewing speed ontroller th Boin winder shft spring Slide the oin winder shft to the right. d While holding the thred tht wrps round the pre-tension disk with your left hnd, use your right hnd to wind the free end of the thred lokwise round the oin five or six times. Turn on the sewing mhine. g Press the foot ontroller or press (strt/ h stop utton) (for s equipped with the strt/stop utton) to strt. i te If the sewing mhine is to e operted using the foot ontroller, onnet the foot ontroller efore turning on the mhine. When the foot ontroller is plugged in, the strt/stop utton nnot e used to strt sewing (only for s equipped with the strt/stop utton). When the oin egins spinning slowly, tke your foot off the foot ontroller or press (strt/stop utton) (for s equipped with the strt/stop utton). j Cut the thred, slide the oin winder shft to the left nd remove the oin. e Pull the thred to the right nd pss it through the slit in the oin winder set. k Slide the sewing speed ontroller k to its originl position (for s equipped with the sewing speed ontroller). Slit in oin winder set (with uilt-in utter) The thred is ut to suitle length. t winding the oin properly my use the thred tension to loosen, nd my rek the needle. Be sure to ut the thred s desried. If the oin is wound without utting the thred using the utter uilt into the slit in the oin winder set, the thred my eome tngled in the oin or the needle my end or rek when the oin thred strts to run out. 2 Wound evenly Wound poorly 4

The needle r does not move when you slide the oin winding shft to the right. Lower threding Instll the oin wound with thred. For more detils on quik-set oin, see pge 6. Winding the oin improperly my use the thred tension to loosen, reking the needle nd resulting in injury. 2 Wound evenly Wound poorly The oin ws designed speifilly for this sewing mhine. If oins from other s re used, the mhine will not operte orretly. Use only the enlosed oin or oins of the sme type (prt ode: SA56, SFB). Atul size.5 mm (7/6 inh) Slide the utton nd open the over. 2 d Cover Slide utton Put the oin in so the thred omes out in the diretion shown y the rrow. Only use oins tht were designed to e used with this mhine. Mke sure you set the oin so the thred unrolls in the right diretion. If the thred unrolls in the wrong diretion, it my use the thred tension to e inorret or rek the needle. Hold the end of the thred, push the oin down with your finger, nd then pss the thred through the slit, s shown. If the thred is not orretly inserted through the tension-djusting spring of the oin se, it my use inorret thred tension (pge 3). This Other s Mke sure you turn the power off while threding the mhine. If you identlly step on the foot ontroller nd the mhine strts to sew, you ould e injured. Rise the needle to its highest position y turning the hndwheel towrd you (ounterlokwise) or press (needle position utton) (for s equipped with the needle position utton), nd rise the presser foot lever. Tension-djusting spring 5
18 KNOWING YOUR SEWING MACHINE e Reple the oin over. Put the left t in ple (see rrow ), nd then press lightly on the right side (see rrow ) until the over liks into ple. If the thred is not orretly inserted through the tension-djusting spring of the oin se, it my use inorret thred tension (pge 3). Memo We reommend tht you do test smple on srp of fri efore you strt to sew. Corret tension Corret tension is importnt s too muh or too little tension will weken your sems or use pukers on your fri. Memo When you finish sewing, remove the oin over nd then mke sure tht the thred is shown s elow. If the thred is not shown s elow, the thred is not inserted through the tension-djusting spring of the oin se orretly. Reinsert the thred orretly. Sine the results differ depending on the type of stithing nd the numer of lyers of fri sewn, perform the tril sewing under the sme onditions tht will e used with your projet. Chnging the sewing diretion When the stithing rehes orner, stop the sewing mhine. Leve the needle lowered (in the fri). If the needle ws rised, lower the needle either y turning the hndwheel towrd you (ounterlokwise) or y pressing (needle position utton) one (for s equipped with the needle position utton). When using the twin needle, e sure to rise the needle efore hnging the sewing diretion. If the fri is turned while the needle is lowered, the needle my end or rek. When sewing long urve while using zigzg stith, selet shorter stith length in order to otin finer stith. If the hook-nd-loop fstener is sewn with the thin needle (65/9-75/), the needle my end or rek. te Before strt sewing, ste together the fri nd the hook-nd-loop fstener. Mke sure tht the needle psses through the hooknd-loop fstener y turning the hndwheel nd lower the needle into the hook-nd-loop fstener efore sewing. And then, sew the edge of the hooknd-loop fstener t slow speed.
