1 RHOPLEX HG-706 Acrylic Emulsion Description Featuring New Innovative Crosslinking Technology for VOC-Compliant Aqueous Gloss and Semigloss Enamels State-of-the-art technology is the backbone of RHOPLEX HG-706 all-acrylic emulsion. This new binder is designed for interior and exterior VOC-compliant gloss and semigloss enamels, allowing formulators to produce highperformance coatings at 50 g/l VOC. RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion takes advantage of innovative technology to improve enamel performance over that of conventional latex polymers. The combination of an all-acrylic backbone and ambient-cure crosslinking technology provides superior performance in formulations ranging from 50 to 150 g/l VOC. Enamels based on RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion provide excellent adhesion, block, and stain removal. It will oxidatively cure after the coalescing of latex particles to form a crosslinked film with improved hardness, toughness, and resistance properties. Aqueous gloss enamels based on RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion will have similar drying characteristics to conventional latex paints. They exhibit very good early properties and will continue to improve during the curing process which may require 2-4 weeks for some properties to fully develop. Unlike the traditional oxidative cure of alkyd-based gloss enamels, RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion will not continue to cure and embrittle over time. The final result is a coating with the unique combination of flexibility and toughness. The performance of RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion is compared to that of two competitive low VOC gloss binders in the following table.

The gloss enamel based on a competitive binder clearly shows tearing of the paint film, while the gloss enamel based on RHOPLEX HG-706 retains its integrity.

3 The excellent household chemical resistance of gloss enamels based on RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion is demonstrated in the photo above. The gloss enamel based on a competitive polymer degrades when wiped with a home cleaner, while the enamel based on RHOPLEX HG-706 stands up to the 200 cleaning cycles. Formulating Guidelines Some additives and chemicals can cause precrosslinking of the RHOPLEX HG-706 latex polymer, resulting in a poorly coalesced film when the paint is applied. Formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing preservatives will cause precrosslinking and are not recommended for use with RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion. Aldehydes from the hydrolysis of vinyl acrylic polymers also cause precrosslinking and blends of RHOPLEX HG-706 and vinyl acrylic latexes are not recommended. Rheology Modifiers ACRYSOL RM-2020NPR, ACRYSOL RM-5000, and ACRYSOL RM-8W or ACRYSOL SCT-275 urethane associative thickeners, when used with RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion, give excellent rheology. ACRYSOL RM-2020NPR and ACRYSOL RM-5000 rheology modifiers are solvent-free polyurethanes that serve as the primary thickener and are used to achieve the desired ICI viscosity. ACRYSOL SCT-275 and ACRYSOL RM-8W rheology modifiers act as cothickeners and can be used to adjust KU viscosity efficiently with only a small increase in ICI viscosity. HASE alkali swellable associative thickeners, such as ACRYSOL RM-5, ACRYSOL RM-6, and ACRYSOL TT-935, can also be used with RHOPLEX RM-706 emulsion to give high-gloss paints excellent brushed flow, sag, and color acceptance. ACRYSOL RM-5 rheology modifier can be used to adjust the paint to the desired ICI viscosity and a small amount of ACRYSOL TT-935 rheology modifier can then be used to adjust the KU viscosity. HASE thickeners should be premixed 1:1 with water before addition to the paint for best incorporation. Cellulosic thickeners reduce flow and gloss when used with a small particle size emulsion and are not recommended as the primary thickener with RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion polymer. Dispersants TAMOL 731A, TAMOL 2001, TAMOL 1124, and TAMOL 165A gloss dispersants are recommended for use with RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion. In general, TAMOL 731A, TAMOL 2001, and TAMOL 165A perform best in HEUR thickened systems, while TAMOL 1124 dispersant is recommended with HASE-type thickeners. In HASE thickened slurry paints which have TAMOL 1124 added to RHOPLEX HG-706 instead of to the slurry, the TAMOL 1124 should be premixed with water. TAMOL 731, TAMOL 165, and TAMOL 2001 dispersants do not have to be premixed with water if they are to be added to RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion.

4 Coalescents and Co-solvents RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion has a lower coalescent demand than traditional latex gloss polymers. Texanol is recommended at a starting point of 2% - 4% on binder solids. Texanol levels of 3% have been found to give excellent low-temperature coalescence at 35 degrees F. Formulations with more than 4% Texanol may have reduced freeze/thaw resistance. Lower levels of coalescent can be used in deep and neutral base formulations since the cosolvents and surfactants in the universal colorants contribute to coalescence. Propylene glycol and glycol ethers, such as diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, can cause localized flocculation and should be premixed with water if they are to be added to the paint after the RHOPLEX HG-706. These solvents can be added to the grind step without a premix if the RHOPLEX HG-706 is to be added later in the formulation. Texanol will not cause localized flocculation of the RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion and does not need to be premixed with water. Pigments The selection of titanium dioxide is an important factor in achieving high-gloss in enamels. An advantage of RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion is its compatibility with a wide variety of slurry grades. To date, Rohm and Haas has evaluated several manufacturers universal slurry and dry titanium dioxides DuPont Ti-Pure R-706 and 746, Kronos 4311, and Millennium 596 and has found no difference in performance. Rohm and Haas expects that other manufacturers universal titanium dioxides will deliver similar performance. Note that dispersant levels need to be optimized for various grades of titanium dioxide. ph Adjustment Neutralizing paint with aqueous ammonia to a ph range of 8.8 to 9.2 is recommended for best formulation stability. Defoamers It is very important to select the proper defoamer when formulating high-gloss systems. Tiny bubbles or craters, which may or may not be visible in flat paint formulations, can become very noticeable in high-gloss systems. Care should be exercised when evaluating and choosing a defoamer, since some defoamers can reduce the gloss and adversely affect color acceptance and surface appearance. Byk -024, Byk-022, Cognis Foamstar A-36, and Tego Foamex 810 are recommended as grind or letdown defoamers with formulations based on RHOPLEX HG- 706 emulsion. Drewplus TS-4481 is an effective grind defoamer. Preservatives and Mildewcides KATHON LX 1.5% microbicide is an effective preservative that will protect paint formulations based on RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion. The recommended use level is 25 ppm or 1.65 pounds per 1,000 pounds of paint. When formulating with RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion, this microbicide should be added to the grind or premixed with water if it is to be added to the letdown. Preservative efficacy should be evaluated once a final formulation has been selected. Formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing preservatives will adversely affect the performance of paints based on RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion and are not recommended for use with this polymer. When selecting a preservative, check with the raw material supplier to ensure that formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasers are not present. IPBC mildewcides, such as ROCIMA 20 and ROCIMA 40, are recommended for use with RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion at a level of 1.6 lbs IPBC solids per 100 gallons of paint. Since these mildewcides contain solvent, the cosolvent level in the formulation will have to be reduced to keep the formulation VOC to 50 grams per liter. Low VOC IPBC mildewcides, which do not contain a volatile solvent, have also been found to work well with RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion. Surfactants Nonionic surfactants, such as Triton X-100, can be used to give freeze/thaw resistance in HEUR thickened formulations. Higher HLB surfactants, such as Triton X-405, are more effective in HASE thickened formulations. When these surfactants are added to the letdown after RHOPLEX HG-706 emulsion, they should be premixed with warm water and glycol (if available).
