1 RHOPLEX AC-264 Emulsion Polymer 100% Acrylic Binder for Exterior Flat, Satin and Semigloss Architectural Coatings Rhoplex AC-264 emulsion polymer is a unique high solids, 100%-acrylic emulsion vehicle for exterior latex paints which provides a high level of adhesion to chalky substrates. The product represents a slight modification of Rhoplex AC-64 emulsion polymer, and is recommended as a substitute for the latter product. As when making any raw material change, the formulator should check key properties such as color acceptance and adhesion. By using Rhoplex AC-264, the formulator can eliminate alkyd-modification as a means of obtaining a margin of safety to help prevent problems with adhesion to chalky paint. Rhoplex AC-264 provides the excellent general durability associated with all-acrylic binders designed for exterior paints. Rhoplex AC-264 offers excellent response to non-ionic rheology modifiers. Physical Properties Listed below are some typical characteristics of Rhoplex AC-264. These should not be interpreted as specifications. BENEFITS OF AC-264 EMULSION POLYMER With the development of Rhoplex AC-264, the paint manufacturer is now able to eliminate or reduce the level of alkyd or oil modification in formulating latex paints that adhere to weathered, chalking substrates. The benefits obtained by eliminating or reducing the level of oils and alkyds and using Rhoplex AC-264 are: More rapid development of adhesion Improved tint retention Improved resistance to chalking Less early dirt pickup

2 Less mildew Fewer manufacturing and color acceptance problems Reduced inventory Improved cleanup of paint brushes and tools Reduced early sensitivity to water RAPID DEVELOPMENT OF ADHESION Although alkyd or oil modification can detract from paint properties, it does promote adhesion to chalky surfaces. However, this adhesion can be slow to develop which may lead to failure if a painted surface is subjected to rain or moisture in the first few days after painting. RESISTANCE TO DIRT PICKUP AND MILDEW Alkyd modification tends to increase mildew growth and dirt pickup in the early life of the paint job. Since the use of oils or alkyds can be eliminated or reduced, Rhoplex AC-264 paints should be cleaner and less prone to mildew than modified paints. FORMULATING SUGGESTION WITH RHOPLEX AC-264 Several formulations for flat, sheen and semigloss paints are given for the evaluation of Rhoplex AC-264. The specific raw materials suggested were used in the development of these formulations. Alternatives should be checked carefully before full scale production is undertaken. Rheology Modifiers are recommended as thickeners for use with Rhoplex AC-264. Included are Acrysol RM-825, and Acrysol RM-2020NPR. Acrysol RM-5 Rheology Modifier is suitable for interior formulations. These Rheology Modifiers enable the formulator to achieve excellent flow and leveling, high film build, and excellent roller application properties, with freedom from roller spatter. These additives offer significant improvement over cellulosic thickeners in these properties. With any of the thickeners, including cellulosics, there is the possibility of phase separation. If phase separation is encountered, use of Attagel 50 at 5 to 10 pounds per 100 gallons of paint is suggested. With Attagel 50, some increase in structure and unsheared viscosity may result. Phase separation may also be avoided by including a high water demand pigment, such as clay. ASP-400 clay (or similar type) has been found to have the least overall affect on the paint film, particularly with respect to durability. Defoamers have been found to be very specific to the different formulations and no one product has general application. Drew 475S, Drew L-475 and Colloid 691 exhibited good performance in the widest variety of formulations. The suggested level is 6 lbs. divided between the grind and the letdown. is the coalescent of choice at a level of approximately 6% based on binder solids.
