1 RHOPLEX % Acrylic Polymer For High Performance Clear and Colored Sealants Description RHOPLEX 2620 emulsion is a high performance acrylic latex binder designed for sealants. This high solids (62%) emulsion affords manufacturers the opportunity to produce sealants that have +25% joint movement, exceptional dry and wet adhesion, and pass the performance requirements of the TT-S-00230C specification. Formulations based on RHOPLEX 2620 binder can tolerate 50% total joint movement without cracking or significant loss of adhesion, even when tested at -15 F. This outstanding performance in the Aymar Cyclic Movement Test (ASTM C-719) meets the performance requirements of Class A architectural sealants (Federal Specification TT-S-00230C, Class A). Adhesion In addition to outstanding Aymar durability, RHOPLEX 2620 binder provides exceptional wet and dry peel adhesion properties (ASTM C-794). Sealants based on RHOPLEX 2620 adhere strongly to a variety of construction substrates, including glass, aluminum and concrete. With glass, for example, dry peel adhesion exceeds 25 pounds per linear inch (pli), and maintains 13 pli, even after seven days of immersion in water. (See Technical Data Sheet 83C21a-4 for detailed adhesion results.) RHOPLEX 2620 binder can be formulated to meet the wet adhesion and adhesion after UV exposure requirements of Class A architectural sealants (Federal Specification TT- S-00230C, Class A). Clear Sealants RHOPLEX 2620 binder is notable for the excellent clarity it affords to properly formulated clear sealants. This clarity offers a cost savings advantage: it allows the natural color of the substrate to show through, eliminating the need for a series of color-matching caulks. Formulation Considerations A suggested starting point formulation is shown in Technical Data Sheet 83C21a-1. We recommend adding the raw materials in the order listed to facilitate ease of incorporation. Note that the sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and water should be premixed, as should the mineral oil, adhesion promoter, and the ammonium hydroxide and water. The fumed silica should be added after the ammonium hydroxide/water premix to reduce the time required for incorporation of the fumed silica. For exceptional mildew resistance, we recommend Skane M-8 mildewcide, which should be added just prior to the fumed silica addition.

2 It should be noted that foam control is particularly critical in formulating clear sealants. The formulation should be deaerated by running the mixer under vacuum during the last five to ten minutes of mixing.
