Haltanol exposure is possible in both industrial and consumer applications. Occupational exposure limits have been established to control the allowable amount of exposure in workplace settings. Consumer exposure, generally infrequent and short in duration, is also highly dependent upon the conditions under which Haltanol is used. See Health Information. 3 PRODUCT USES Over 80% of the material produced is used as a coalescing aid in latex paint. Approximately 14% of the material is used as a chemical intermediate which is converted to other chemical substances used as plasticizers. About 2% of the material may be used to make dyestuffs, adhesives, building material agents, detergents, cleaning agents, fertilizers, surface treatment agents, or as a solvent. Human exposure will be both in occupational atmospheres and from use of consumer products containing Haltanol. HEALTH INFORMATION Haltanol has a low order of acute toxicity. No exposure limits have been established by OSHA or ACGIH. Vapor concentrations of are expected to be below 2 ppm in most consumer applications. An unpublished study indicates that six hour exposures to 390 ppm and 850 ppm are not acutely toxic. The acute oral LD50 is >3200 mg/kg. The data available from guideline studies indicate that Haltanol has a low potential to irritate the skin and that affects are reversible. The dermal LD50 is >15g/kg. There are no known cancer hazards. POTENTIAL FOR EXPOSURE There is a potential for occupational and consumer exposure through inhalation and skin contact although exposures through inhalation are expected to be low due to the low vapor pressure. Based on the uses for Haltanol the public could be exposed through: Workplace exposure This refers to potential exposure to Haltanol in a manufacturing facility or through evaporation in various industrial applications. Generally, exposure to Haltanol by personnel in manufacturing facilities is relatively low because of the low volatility and because the process, storage and handling operations are enclosed. The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) to HEA vapors is 25 parts per million (ppm) per an 8-hour work day. Page 3 of 5

4 Consumer use of products containing Haltanol This category of exposure is highly variable depending on the products used and the conditions under which they are used. Exposure of the majority of consumers is through its use in paint. Exposure to aerosols is possible as a result of industrial spraying with paints containing Haltanol. Indirect exposures via the environment (e.g. ingestion of surface water contaminated with Haltanol) are also possible. Environmental releases Haltanol can enter the environment as emissions from its manufacture and use as a solvent. Chemical manufacturers are committed to operating in an environmentally responsible manner everywhere business is done. Efforts are guided by in-depth scientific understanding of the environmental impact of operations, as well as the social and economic needs of the communities. Industrial spills or releases are rare; however a spill may pose a significant flammability issue. REGULATORY STATUS Refer to the JHL Material Safety Data sheet for more specific information. Haltanol is not subject to the reporting requirement of CERCLA. Haltanol is not SARA Section 313 chemical. Haltanol is on the U.S. TSCA list and is included in the EEC's EINECS, Canadian DSL, Australian and Japanese chemical inventories. STORAGE AND HANDLING General industry practice is to store Haltanol in carbon or stainless steel vessels. Haltanol should be stored only in tightly closed, properly vented containers away from heat, sparks, open flame or strong oxidizing agents. Handle empty containers carefully. Combustible residue remains after emptying. Provided proper storage and handling precautions are taken, expect Haltanol to be technically stable for at least 12 months.
