2 Dance the Blues Away Like every Tuesday Ann Baxter, aged 68, is joining her belly dance class which is part of a local dance scheme in the UK. More and more people are learning how to dance, be it for health reasons or just for fun. Courses and training are funded by the National Lottery, local authorities and arts associations. In addition, an increasing number of doctors are prescribing dance lessons to patients, and hip-hop instructors are teaching young footballers about rhythm and balance. Ann s classes are run by the Yorkshire Dance Centre. Mike Dove, the centre s organiser, says that attendance has more than doubled in the last four years. He puts this down to a bigger choice on one hand and easier access like sponsored classes on the other. At the moment the centre offers 32 different lessons every week everything from African or Indian dancing, to Zumba. Aerobics and fitness training can be a relatively lonely way of keeping fit, Mike explains. People enjoy coming to our classes because not only do they help them to stay fit but also force them to interact with others. shopping I often see people from the dance class and we say hello and sometimes have a chat. It makes me feel I m part of a community. In its Active for Life campaign the British Health Education Authority is currently promoting dance as one of several activities. A couple of years ago there was one of the first health and dance conferences in the UK. Lisa Dunbar, one of the speakers, said that with regard to fitness, dancing could be just as effective as jogging. There had been tests done in the US where people who previously hadn t done any sport were put on two different fitness programmes, some using dancing, the others running, and the results were the same. But people were much more likely to keep up dancing than running, therefore dancing might be more suitable in the long run. So, what about joining one of those American Line Dancing, Salsa or Zumba classes? John Stevens, one of the company s teachers, goes into schools and introduces kids to jazz and street dance as well as hip hop. He is convinced that dancing gives also the less academic kids something to focus on. I have received very good feedback from several school teachers telling me that usually difficult children have become more integrated and manageable because of these lessons. I m sure this is because those kids have found something at school they are good at and which is helping their self-esteem. Ann, who already keeps fit by running, loves the social aspect of her weekly dance lesson. The feeling of togetherness is wonderful. When I go jogging I don t usually talk to anybody. But when I go
