About Us Cranbrook School Here at Cranbrook we aim to achieve excellent academic results for all students and do so to a standard in advance of their years. However, whilst doing so, we instil a full range of life skills as well as nurturing and developing positive personal qualities. A key element in achieving this success is our expertise in acknowledging and treating each student as an individual. We determine their strengths and weaknesses and tailor their time with us accordingly, with constant monitoring, evaluation and fine tuning taking place in the background, from the outset. We are also totally committed to our own performance as a school in order to be our very best for each student. We constantly observe and review every department and individual staff member at every Key Stage, to ensure that our high standards are always maintained. We consider the physical and emotional wellbeing of each student to be of prime importance to us, with a variety of play, physical education and sport alongside their academic week. Our parents appreciate the traditional values of respect, courtesy, tolerance and multicultural awareness that we foster in their children. We also make no apology for encouraging balanced competitiveness both inside and outside of the classroom. Our children feel a particular pride in their school and are renowned in the local community for being extremely smart, polite and courteous; attributes that are expected of them by the school at all times. Founded in 1896, Cranbrook has always combined high academic performance with traditional values. Page 4
Cranbrook School Acquisition by Cognita Schools Ltd in April 2007 has prepared the school for this next stage in its history. Originally a boys-only school, In January 2011, Cranbrook College merged with Glenarm College, introducing a Nursery and integrating both schools into a new, state of the art site in Mansfield Rd,. The schools, who share the same founder, have re-branded themselves under the new title of Cranbrook and are now fully co-educational. The school originally offered classes for students aged three to 16 with an inclusive approach to a rounded education. In September 2012 the school opened their Sixth Form to students, increasing their age range of students from 3 to 18. Over the years we have striven to maintain our reputation for the traditional values of excellence, smartness of uniform, courtesy, good manners, integrity and confidence. These qualities can be seen in our pupils today, blended with modern and innovative ideas. Our Vision Statement At Cranbrook our students will achieve the best they can in their work and behaviour. This is because we put excellence in teaching and traditional values at the heart of everything we do. We believe the core purpose of teachers is to inspire and motivate students to achieve their best and develop a passion for their favourite subjects. The better teachers teach, the more children will learn, and the more they learn, the better they will feel about themselves. We expect all in our community to be polite and courteous and to show respect for themselves, for others and for the environment. We care that staff and students alike enjoy their time at school and strive to give more than they receive. We see our school as part of a wider community and take great pride in our close relationships with parents and the local community. Children are entitled to an education, which allows them to reach their full potential unhindered by inequalities, racism, sexism and any kind of harassment. Page 5

Cranbrook School Cranbrook in the Press - Ofsted Report 23 rd July 2012 Cognita school achieves top grades in latest Ofsted report An Ilford school has received a glowing endorsement from Ofsted, the Office for Standards in Education, for its outstanding commitment to the welfare, development and progress of its pupils. Inspectors commended Cranbrook School, a member of the Cognita Group of schools, for its commitment to delivering high quality education in a positive environment, where teachers are encouraged to focus on the quality of learning to ensure that students progress at a rate in excess of expectations. Founded in 1896, Cranbrook School is a fully co-educational independent school for pupils aged between 3 to 18 years, with a new Sixth Form scheduled to open in September Its 282 pupils consistently perform well above the national average at the end of each key stage. In January 2011, Cranbrook and Glenarm Colleges integrated into a new, state of the art site on Mansfield Rd, adjacent to the existing Cranbrook College campus. The report reserved special praise for the school s unwavering commitment to achieving its vision and values of ensuring that staff and students alike enjoy their time at the school and strive to give more than they receive. The school was also praised for the added value it achieves for each and every pupil. Commenting on the report, Ivan Mulinder, Head Teacher of Cranbrook School, said: This report is a great endorsement of the staff and pupils at Cranbrook and the very special atmosphere and approach to learning that we have developed in recent years. One of the school s strengths is its capacity to get the very best from each child, taking their gifts and talents and translating them into excellent exam results which exceed national benchmarks and their earlier expectations. I congratulate everyone in the school community and am proud that Cranbrook offers both academic outcomes and a supportive, happy environment for pupils. Speaking of the school, Ofsted reporting inspector, David Young said: Cranbrook aims to put excellence in teaching, with traditional values, at the heart of its education. The school s vision places a strong emphasis on the development of personal qualities, including courtesy and respect, which helps students engage with interest and enthusiasm in their learning. As a result of high expectations and good attention to students personal needs, students throughout the school have very positive attitudes to learning and their behaviour is outstanding. Page 8
Cranbrook School Cranbrook in the Press - Investment Ivan Mulinder, appointed head of Cranbrook in January, said: The whole day went extremely well, with over 100 parents who showed up. Tuesday 24 th May m boost for Ilford private school One of an Ilford school s oldest former pupils has helped some of its youngest to open 4million of new facilties. We wanted to celebrate the new facilities but also the 100 years of history that the school has, that s why we invited John Smith along. Cranbrook school was established in 1896 by W H Carter, two years after his sister cofounded Glenarm College. Today the united Cranbrook has nearly 300 students and is planning to expand in the years to come. Mr Mulinder added: My goal is to make our good grades even better with new initiatives. It is a very bright future for the school, and our aims is to have 100 per cent of students achieving five A* to C grades at Key Stage Four. Mike Gapes cutting the ribbon with Headmaster Ivan Mulinder and VIPs Old boy John Smith, 83, joined Ilford South MP Mike Gapes on Saturday when he cut the ribbon at Cranbrook, an independent college in Mansfield Road, Ilford. As part of the day-long ceremony parents were taken on a tour of the new facilities, as well as listening to MP Mike Gapes talking about his own school days. Olympic Gold Medalist Christine Ohuruogu later arrived to release balloons to mark the occasion. The investment in the building comes after Cranbrook College was merged with Glenarm College at Easter to create an institution catering for boys and girls aged from 3 to 16 years old. Page 9
Candidate Brief Cranbrook School, Background to Cognita Cognita was formed in 2004 with funds provided by its management and Englefield Capital. The Group Company employs c. 4,000 staff across the UK, Europe, Asia and Latin America. There are over 17,000 pupils on the roll of the 50+ schools. The schools fit a broad profile, including Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior Schools. The Company's Head Office is in Milton Keynes. Cognita's Chairman Chris Woodhead has over 35 years experience in education. He has taught English in grammar and comprehensive schools, lectured in education at Oxford University, and worked in senior posts in three Local Education Authorities. He ran the National Curriculum Council and the Schools Curriculum Assessment Authority before becoming Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools. He resigned from this post in November He is now a Professor of Education at the University of Buckingham and broadcasts and writes regularly on education policy. Over the years, Chris Woodhead has championed the values that are important to millions of parents across the country. "The basic skills of literacy and numeracy; a broad and balanced curriculum which excites all children; a secure, disciplined learning environment in which each child is known and valued; we do not need to reinvent the 21st century" he goes on to say that, "what we want is what concerned parents have always wanted: teachers who care equally about the subjects they teach and the children for whom they are responsible, who have the highest possible expectations of each and every one of their pupils, and who, can keep order and explain ideas with clarity and enthusiasm that captures the child's imagination" Cognita's Vision is to own and manage a family of independent schools, each of which enjoys an excellent reputation within its community. Each school's reputation will grow as a result of consistently meeting the aspirations that parents have for their child's education. Their child will be happy and enthusiastic about the school. The school will be seen to invest in its relationship with individual parents. It will be recognised as keen to nurture a culture that treats parents as customers. The Group aims to implement three key strategies in all its schools, in order to deliver upon this vision. It will: Protect, preserve and develop the atmosphere, ethos and culture of each school so that it promotes its own identity. Recruit, retain and develop very good teachers in order to provide the very best education. Develop excellent communications between the school and its parents.
