Background On vember 30, 1949, six members of the Oklahoma Association for the Blind met in the office of a downtown Oklahoma City attorney. Each of these six pioneers, though legally or totally blind had a clear vision: to establish a work and training facility that would improve the quality of life for people who are blind and vision impaired. Today, NewView Oklahoma (formerly Oklahoma League for the Blind) is the only private non-profit agency in the state to provide employment and vision rehabilitation services to individuals with vision loss. NewView accomplishes its mission by providing vocational, social, rehabilitative and educational services for people who are blind or visually impaired. As an advocate for the interests those who are visually impaired, NewView seeks to advance the belief that persons with vision loss are capable of achieving full autonomy and independence. Committed to educating the community about blindness, NewView Oklahoma accomplishes these goals through responsible stewardship of human and financial resources. 2
3 Impact Capitalizing on the advances made in technology, NewView Oklahoma has created new job opportunities for blind adults by adding call center, mailroom and warehousing/logistics operations to our employment program. With the establishment of the Low Vision Clinic in Oklahoma City, NewView has become known nation-wide as an innovator in the use of a multi-disciplinary approach to low vision rehabilitation therapy. Recognizing the void in the availability of low vision rehabilitation services in the Tulsa area, NewView opened the Tulsa Low Vision Center to serve the estimated 20,000 people impacted by vision loss in northeastern Oklahoma. A pioneer in the field of comprehensive low vision services, NewView has been recognized for innovation and distinguished service by Blue Cross and Blue Shield as the recipient of the Dr. Rodney L. Huey Memorial Champion of Oklahoma Health, the Apollo Award from the Oklahoma Association of Optometric Professionals and the Excellence in Aging, Program of the Year award from the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. Selected from a field of candidates nationwide, NewView is also the recipient of the Apollo Award from the National Association of Optometric Physicians. Needs 1) NewView seeks to develop partnerships with the public and private sectors to expand opportunities for employment for visually impaired working age adults. NewView has developed a wide range of manufacturing and production capabilities to serve industrial and governmental customers and capitalized on new technologies that offer customers access to a full range of communications and logistics business management services. 2) NewView provides our life-changing rehabilitation services to people challenged by vision loss in every quadrant of the state. Because reimbursements from Medicare and other sources cover only 30 percent of the costs of these services, NewView must fill the gap with charitable gifts averaging more than $1 million annually. 3) Dynamic, creative and committed volunteer resources are needed to help us to develop additional resources and more effectively connect with the community and engage them in our work. Area Served Area Served Geographic Area Served Oklahoma - Statewide Oklahoma City Metropolitan Statistical Area (all 7 counties) While NewView's primary service area is Oklahoma City and surrounding counties, our employment and rehabilitation programs serve blind and visually impaired individuals statewide and throughout the country.
