9 During my final year of my undergraduate degree I became really interested in IT security. I was able to use what I was learning in the work place and this awakened me to a whole new experience. I wanted to formalise my new found interest academically but was focused on ensuring it was strongly aligned with business. When I was looking at the course (Cyber Security and Management), I immediately felt drawn to it. It offers a combination of management and technical content which was perfect for me and met all of my desirables. Throughout the year, I encountered many obstacles and challenges. All of which were overcome with the help of the course tutor and other staff within the faculty. It was incredibly reassuring to know that the University and its staff support their students as much as possible. Not only this, but I found all of the lecturers delivering module content to be highly intelligent with real industrial experience. This was excellent because I was able to see how theory is applied in the real world! (ISC)2 is a globally renowned and respected professional accreditation provider which pioneers and organizes the CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) accreditation, a highly sought after accreditation. Students on the MSc Cyber Security and Management course will receive a firm and solid grounding in most of the Ten Domains of the Common Body of Knowledge (CBK) through the programme s core Cyber Security modules. In addition, they will have the opportunity to take a CISSP Compact Review Seminar delivered at Warwick by (ISC)2 * in preparation for the CISSP Certification Examination. This allows students to benefit from both academic and professional certification excellence. On successful completion of the exam, students will become CISSP Academic Associates. * additional cost may apply Stuart Butcher, UK Currently studying Cyber Security and Management Undergraduate studies: BSc Computer Science, University of Derby Currently working as a Network Consulting Engineer for Cisco Systems The course dictated attendance to a diverse portfolio of modules, giving a good balance of technical insight as well as business and management practices, such as the governance of Enterprise IT systems. Having this balance ensured that I not only learned how to secure a network as an engineer, but was also able to understand the organization's driving forces. Without this understanding, it is easy to forget that security policies should not just protect a network, but should enable new business opportunities and help to improve the efficiency and productivity of the organization. In fact, I firmly believe that if it was not for the structure and content of the course, I would not be where I am today - a Network Consulting Engineer for Cisco Systems. After completing his MSc in 2002, Murat took on a Risk Consultancy role with a major insurance brokerage. In 2003 he joined Pfizer s Strategic Planning function as a Project Manager and within a year was promoted to Product Manager. He spent the next four years gaining increasing responsibility as he moved to more senior roles then in 2008, he became Senior Product Manager for a leading product within Pfizer s Cardiology portfolio. Now Murat is the Marketing Lead for the Caucasus & Central Asia Region. It s an exciting job but the responsibilities are huge. Put simply, my role is to drive strategic marketing planning and execution for a region that s comprised of ten countries, spanning from Georgia to Mongolia. My year at WMG has helped my career in three key areas firstly, the international environment at Warwick gave me the chance to work with fellow students from right across the world. This has really helped my progress in a global company and in roles with an international aspect. Secondly, there s the academic side of things. Thanks largely to that, I was able to land a job with Pfizer and move forward. Thirdly, I soon discovered that an MSc from WMG is well respected in the business world. Both the institution and the qualification itself are seen to represent high-quality learning with an organisation that prepares its students to rapidly take responsibility within industry. Mahdad Sadeghi, Iran Engineering Business Management Graduate I researched into several universities in the UK and US before deciding on Engineering Business Management at Warwick. I felt this Master s would enable me to see the bigger picture in terms of how technology businesses function. The modules themselves cover a huge variety of different areas from people management and strategic marketing though to financial analysis, logistics and product design - the programme brought the engineering and business areas together into one cohesive whole. I liked the unique structure of the EBM course and WMG s approach, which puts emphasis on the practical application of theory. My dissertation combined my background in electrical engineering with the businessfocused areas of key decision-making and suppliers. I worked closely with WMG s International Automotive Research Centre and interviewed people from a range of companies including Jaguar Land Rover. It was a great opportunity to discuss key business areas with professionals who are working at the front-line of current developments. In fact, it was someone at JLR who first suggested that my dissertation should be published, which I am now planning to do. Mahdad graduated with outstanding distinction, while his dissertation gained a commendation and departmental prize. His second assessor, Dr Rebecca Cain offered him a PhD with her team at WMG s Digital Lab addressing the problems of poor healthcare environment design, and working with industrial partners to pull together design and engineering with architecture, psychology, healthcare and ICT. 13 Paulina Rovira-Sanchez, Mexico e-business Management Graduate Key Facts Undergraduate studies: Electrical Systems Engineering, Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico Since graduating from WMG, Paulina has been working as Project Manager for Grupo Expansion, a Mexican subsidiary of Time Inc. For me the big thing about WMG s e-business Management course is that we look at today s manufacturing companies and the challenges they face, then work with others to develop effective solutions. Rather than just learning, you re constantly learning by doing. That makes it all much more memorable and powerful. The course is challenging and stretching, but there s a very collaborative atmosphere at Warwick. If you ever need help or guidance on any aspect of your studies or university life, it s always there. Michael Mortenson, UK e-business Management Graduate Currently working as a freelance consultant with a view to returning to Warwick to take up a PhD in the near future. Although it was definitely challenging - the programme structure of having an intensive week of study for each module worked very well for me it means that you have to be able to manage your own time well, which in itself is an essential skill to have once you re in the workplace. The e-bm programme is outstanding. It is very much geared to the practical application of ideas in the real world. You re learning the theory, but are constantly exploring how that theory can be used to meet today s business challenges and drive commercial success. 19 Jan Ruecker, Germany Management for Business Excellence Graduate Key Facts The whole structure of the course really surprised me. Instead of just sitting in lectures, we spent a lot of time working as teams on projects and case studies. You re constantly having to research topics yourself and put them into practice as you work to tight deadlines, so it s all very intensive and challenging. But in this way, you learn by doing rather than listening, which is very powerful. It also replicates what life s like in the real world, as I discovered when I left Warwick and started my new job as a Project Manager. Through every module of the course, the teaching staff were patient and supportive - that gave us all the confidence to express ourselves and contribute as much as we could. As for the course itself, it challenged my perceptions and behaviour constantly. It changed the way I think. MBE is not just about learning things; it s about putting them into practice and seeing how they work in the real business world. You learn from experience and develop the ability to think outside the box. For example, in each module we had to run an imaginary business, taking roles within the organisation. Working through Undergraduate studies: BSc Engineering, Coventry University, United Kingdom Thanks to my year at WMG, I feel that I am able to take on board and assimilate new things very quickly. I am already finding out how relevant the course content is too. By going beyond the theory and exploring how subjects work in practical business terms, you learn how to use them, rather than just knowing about them. That goes for everything from leadership and knowledge management through to using Six Sigma approaches to improve processes. Rossmary Caballero, Colombia Management for Business Excellence Graduate Undergraduate studies: BSc Economics, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Colombia issues this way, you find the answers to problems yourself. This in itself was a great experience. We were constantly encouraged to discuss things openly to put our view across without any fear or worry that we might say the wrong thing! This was particularly interesting as I was sharing ideas with people from other cultures right across the world, so there were lots of different perspectives. Nkoyo Essien, Nigeria Process Business Management Graduate Undergraduate studies: BSc Chemical Engineering, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Nigeria In each of the modules I could see the relevance of what I was learning to the way real businesses operate. Several introduced completely new areas to me such as Logistics and Operations Management and Financial Analysis. As I worked through these, quite often I would think to myself: Oh yes, these are things that I really need to know! For my dissertation subject, I chose An Analysis of Municipal Solid Waste Management and Energy from Waste Technologies. A Comparison of Developing and Developed Countries. This involved talking to Energy from Waste companies both here in the UK and in Nigeria, as well as evaluating the success of projects in both countries. It s a rapidly developing area that s being driven by emerging technologies, so it was interesting and valuable to gain an in-depth understanding of current developments. When I left WMG I took a couple of internships - both organised through the University. The first was as an account executive with a technical PR consultancy. The business has a lot of manufacturing and engineering clients, so it s been fascinating to see the industry from a communications perspective. It s not an area I d thought of working in before, but it s been useful to build experience in this area and add new skills. I m now working on a new research based project entitled Lead Principles in Process Design. Specifically, I m looking at how to effectively disseminate the results of the research through online channels. 25 Daren Maynard, Trinidad and Tobago Programme and Project Management Graduate Key Facts Every one of the modules was excellent in its own right. A couple of them stood out for me though. Managing the Multi-Project Programme Environment was a real eye-opener. I had only managed single projects before so I found this module particularly stretching, but equally rewarding. Management of Change was another subject that made all of us think in new ways. For my dissertation I returned to an industry I had worked in previously - my subject was Planning for Supply Chain Risks in Ammonia Plant Refurbishment Projects. Although there are management systems designed for project and supply chain risks, none had been created specifically for the ammonia industry. I developed a The whole programme makes you stretch yourself and go outside your comfort zone. But that s how you learn, by doing things that you ve never done before. Actually, I found myself doing things that I never thought I was capable of doing. That made me really believe in myself and what I could achieve. I would describe it as a life-changing experience and nothing can prepare you for it. My MSc project looked at the cost performance of major rail infrastructure projects in Europe. That entailed studying Undergraduate studies: BEng Industrial Engineering, University of the West Indies new experiential risk planning model with input from supply chain professionals in the industry. Let s say you have a major repair programme for a plant. You could be looking at a 25 million project with a two-year lead time. With materials needing to be shipped in from across the world, there are massive supply chain risks. This model addresses those risks from an industry-specific perspective, and gives managers a robust framework within which to plan the project. His dissertation won Daren a distinction and has already been published as two conference papers, as well as being included as a chapter in International Supply Chain Management and Collaboration Practices (Vol 4). Apostolos Tzouvaras, Greece Programme and Project Management Graduate Undergraduate studies: Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics. Graduate studies: MSc Automation Systems, National Technical University of Athens Currently working as a Project Management Consultant for Airbus two cases: the Olympic rail infrastructure programme for the 2012 games in London and the Athens Metro project which was linked with the 2004 Olympics. In London the programme was completed on time and on budget, though in Athens the project was delivered five years late with huge cost overruns. As part of my research, I interviewed key personnel at the Olympic Delivery Authority in London and collaborated with University College London and the University of Thessaly in Greece. 31 Johanna Acosta Cañon, Colombia WMG Graduate Key Facts Johanna is a computer scientist with a background in software development and seven years professional experience, mainly within the healthcare and automotive domains. On completion of her Masters at WMG, Johanna was offered a two year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project with WMG and Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, funded by the Technology Strategy Board and the Department of Health. As part of this she is currently undertaking a second MSc this time by research - with the Institute of Digital Healthcare at WMG. I was at a stage in my career where I was keen to improve my professional profile and add management expertise to my technical skills, whist maintaining a focus on healthcare. After reviewing several Master s programmes I found a great opportunity at Warwick where I could study Programme and Project Management and take additional elective modules in e-health Technologies. The flexible nature of the programme was very appealing and enabled me to focus exactly where my interests lay. Of course, had the MSc in Digital Healthcare been offered at the time, I would certainly have opted for this programme, but I m now delighted to be working and researching closely with the professors of the Institute of Digital Healthcare at WMG, just as they are launching this exciting new MSc. The module in e-health Technologies was fascinating. We learned how to conduct a proper technology assessment to choose the best technology for the correct type of application this has been extremely useful and I have applied the knowledge extensively during my KTP project. Throughout the module we looked into several different areas of current research - every session was followed up with a workshop in which the concepts we d learned could be applied to a real case study where we had to provide solutions. This type of practical learning within truly multidisciplinary groups was highly stimulating and engaging. I see huge opportunities within the healthcare sector in terms of technological development. So much research is being carried out into disease prevention and remote control and monitoring of health. There is a considerable amount of resource - major technology companies such as Microsoft, Google, IBM and Bosch are investing heavily into producing healthcare systems to help individuals monitor their conditions as part of their daily routine. Visit our alumni website: alumni The perfect platform for an international career Ian Wong, Malaysia Studying my MSc at WMG has definitely helped my career development. Although I didn t realise it at the time, the programme was very much future focused. It enabled me to see five or ten years ahead, to the way industry would develop and the kind of new thinking and new solutions that those developments would demand. Since gaining his MSc from WMG back in 1998, Ian Wong has forged a highly successful career that has seen him work with a number of world-leading businesses. After graduating from Warwick, he returned to Malaysia and carefully targeted companies whose activities matched the subjects he had studied at WMG. He was offered a role as Senior Engineer with Siemens Malaysia, where he was initially involved in developing and implementing IT applications within a manufacturing environment. This whole concept was very new in Asia at the time. What I studied at Warwick had already given me a solid grounding in the area, and as my role at Siemens moved forward, I was soon seen as an expert in the subject. That role quickly grew into project management, then to business development. Within two years, Ian was promoted to Manager of Industrial Projects, leading a small business unit to create and implement engineering projects for clients across a range of sectors. In 2003, he was made Manager of the company s Kerteh branch, taking responsibility for business growth within a region of Malaysia. Just a year later, Ian was approached by Johnson Controls Malaysia to join them as Country Manager. The opportunity to take on a country-wide role, develop a larger market and manage a bigger team was too good to miss. It was my responsibility to start up the entire technical solutions business, then drive its ongoing growth. Under Ian s control, the company went from strength to strength, and within two years he once again had the chance to progress his career still further. The COGEBI Group, a world-leading manufacturer of mica-based insulating materials, asked him to become Managing Director of their Asia business unit. Since Ian launched COGEBI Asia in 2005, the business has grown at a rate of around 20% a year, and it is continually moving into new markets. It has been a big challenge for sure, but it is also massively rewarding watching a company that you started become so successful, as well as leading a team to drive that success. 32 go.warwick.ac.uk/wmgmasters/courses

33 One thing became clear very soon after I started my job at TATA Technologies: everything about the WMG course was designed to prepare me for life in business. My MSc at Warwick gave me a broad picture and an understanding of today s business environment. A really important part of this is understanding where Tata fits into the scheme of things on a global basis. But more than that, WMG gave me an all-round knowledge of how business works from financing, logistics and HR to marketing and resourcing. I was able to walk into the company with a wideranging awareness of how everything fits together to keep the organisation running. Ifiok Esang, EBM Graduate Current role Project Manager, TATA Technologies, Coventry. Ifiok has adapted exceptionally well to working in a very challenging environment. He has consistently delivered when asked to take responsibility for a range of key activities and has become an invaluable member of the team.
