2 Introduction The new MSScP(SCS) is meant for degree holders who are seeking a recognized qualification equivalent to a Bachelor s degree in Psychology It is an upgrade from the previously offered Postgraduate Diploma (PGP(SCS)) Graduates of the MSScP s predecessor, the PGP(SCS), have successfully published their research theses, become members of the Hong Kong Psychological Society, and entered Educational Psychology, Counseling, and MPhil degree programmes in Hong Kong and abroad Graduates have also used their upgraded knowledge and skills to improve their current careers and workplaces, e.g as teachers and school leaders in various settings

3 Special features Foundational training in all basic areas of psychology, with a special focus on advanced knowledge in learning and education Individually supervised research thesis (capstone project) Courses taught by award-winning teachers and experts in the field Part-time or Full-time modes available For applicants who have not yet taken the prerequisite Introductory Psychology course, a summertime Bridging Course is offered

4 Courses Offered on weekday evenings (6:30pm-9:20pm) or Saturday afternoons Mode of Instruction is English 10 core courses, plus an individually supervised 6-credit Research Project Recognition of Prior Learning Students who have taken equivalent courses before may apply for course transfer (if fairly recent / received good marks)

5 Courses 3 semesters / year Semester 1 (Sep-Dec), Semester 2a (Jan-Apr), & Semester 2b (Apr-Jul) 10 Core Courses (1 semester / 3 credits each): Personality Psychology Social Psychology Human Development across the Lifespan Biological Psychology Cognitive Psychology Abnormal Psychology Learning Theories & Processes Educational Psychology Research Methods in Psychological Studies Statistical Methods in Psychological Studies 1 Research Project in Psychological Studies (2 semesters / 6 credits)

6 Programme Length and Cost Tuition cost: currently $3,100 / credit ($111,600 total) Provisional; subject to yearly adjustment Bridging course is an additional $9,300 Part-time mode: Normative study period: 2 years (2-3 courses per semester) Maximum study period: 4 years Full-time mode: Normative study period: 1.5 years (2-4 courses per semester) Maximum study period: 3 years Non-local students are recommended to budget an additional $6,200-$8,200 / month for living expenses

7 Bridging Course Applicants who have not previously studied a survey Introductory Psychology course can take our Bridging Course to meet that prerequisite The 2014 Bridging Course is an intensive 8-session, 4- week introductory psychology course offered weekday evenings and Saturday afternoons of July, 2014 Alternatively, applicants may request to take the non-intensive, day-time Basic Principles of Psychology course in September-December 2014; however, this may delay graduation

8 Transportation Classes are usually held at the Tai Po campus Accessible by private HKIEd shuttle to/from University MTR station Frequent shuttles run every minutes, and take ~15 minutes to reach campus Non-local students may apply for on-campus housing

9 Admission requirements Applicants should hold a recognized Bachelor s degree If previous degree(s) were obtained from an institution in a non-english speaking system, applicants should normally fulfill one of the following minimum English proficiency requirements: IELTS 6.0; or Grade C or above in GCSE/ GCE OL English; or a TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 80 (internet-based test) or 213 (computer-based test); or Band 6 in the Chinese Mainland s College English Test (CET) (a total score of no lower than 430 if the test was taken after June 2005); or other equivalent qualifications. Preferably, applicants already have introductory psychology training at a recognized tertiary institution
