MASTER OF ARTS Majors can be chosen from this programme: Communication and New Media History International Relations and Public Policy European Studies COMMUNICATION AND NEW MEDIA BACKGROUND In a world faced with dynamic and ever-changing communication technologies and a growing information industry, the University of Macau takes the lead in the new era of e- communication in the western Pearl River Delta Region. We have designed a graduate programme to meet the challenges of the contemporary media environment. The programme leads to a Master of Arts degree in the field of Communication and New Media. This Master s programme aims to help current and prospective communication professionals attain theoretical knowledge and skills in mass communication and digital media, and their social and cultural effects. The rapid development of the Internet, World Wide Web, Multimedia Technology, and the IT industry has created a new horizon for communication industries and for communication studies. Understanding the uses, effects, and consequences of these technologies will help position professionals more competitively in the industry. Further, students who wish to pursue studies beyond the M.A. receive a solid foundation for such work. All courses in the programme are conducted entirely in English. Therefore, aside from the course content, students also benefit from an improved ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Applicants should have achieved the equivalent* of an overall result of Grade C+ or better in the Bachelor s degree studies. Preference will be given to applicants with a background in social science and welldeveloped research interest in journalism or communication. * The equivalent means 2.3 on the 4.0 GPA scale, 14 on the 20-point scale or 70 out of 100. All applicants MUST have a minimum TOEFL score of 580 (paper-based test) or 237 (computerbased test) or 93 (internet-based test); or IELTS score: a minimum score of 6.5 or its equivalence, unless they: have obtained a grade C or above in the Use of English in the Advanced Level Examinations; or hold a Bachelor s degree in English from a recognized university; or produce other proof of English proficiency accepted by the admissions committee All qualified applicants will be interviewed in person or by telephone and there is also a writing test in English. 2

3 LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS The classes will be taught in English. A student is required to submit a thesis written in English and has an oral defence of that thesis. Applicants should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement: TOEFL score 580 (paper-based test) or 237 (computer-based test) or 93 (internet-based test); or Overall band 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or Score 500 in the new College English Test (CET6) of Chinese mainland. COURSE DURATION The normal period of study is two academic years (24 months, or four semesters). The first three semesters is assigned to course work and the last semesters to thesis completion. NUMBER OF STUDENTS The University of Macau, through the Faculty of Social Sciences, will accept a minimum number of 10 and a maximum number of 30 students for the programme. Additional applicants will be put on a waiting list. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION Applicants will be required to sit an Entrance Assessment and attend an interview. Candidates applying from outside Macao will be interviewed by telephone and will be required to complete the Entrance Assessment by electronic format. Applicants will be selected by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities according to the following criteria: a) The educational curriculum vitae, recommendation letters, and personal statement of the applicant; b) The applicant s performance in undergraduate study; c) The applicant s working or internship experience; d) The applicant's performance in the Entrance Assessment and Interview. The Faculty of Social Sciences will conduct the selection of applications on the recommendation of a panel appointed by FSS. One of the panel members must be the coordinator of the Master in Communication and New Media Programme. Appeals against the panel s decision will not be accepted except in cases of verified procedural errors. PROGRAMME REGULATIONS In order to obtain this degree, students should complete three compulsory and six required elective courses (or seven elective courses if the student writes an applied thesis), pass all examinations, and write a thesis in English under a designated supervisor. Upon successful completion of course work, students will choose the subject of their thesis under the guidance of their supervisors. All supervisors should hold a doctoral degree or equivalent qualifications. A panel of examiners will be appointed to examine the thesis itself and conduct an oral 3

4 examination on the subject of that thesis. The examination board should consist of at least three members. All examiners should hold a doctoral degree. GENERAL RULES The registration and enrolment conditions, as well as the evaluation, classification and attendance requirements of the programme are similar to those of the Bachelor programmes of the University of Macau. Students should attend at least 80% of the total course hours. Students who do not meet the attendance requirement will fail the course concerned. The award of the degree complies with the laws governing higher education in Macao. 6 HISTORY ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Applicants need to meet the University Admission Regulations, have a bachelor s degree in history or history related training and proof of English proficiency (such as TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent), and pass the interview. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Classes will be conducted in English but supplemented with Chinese. Students are required to submit theses written in English and complete oral defence in English but supplemented in Chinese. Therefore, applicant s English should be proficient. All coursework must be completed before writing the thesis proposal... A panel of examiners will be appointed by the Academic Council of FSH to examine each thesis and conduct an oral examination. After submitting a thesis and passing the oral defence for the thesis, the student will be awarded Master of Arts in History. 6

Up to two joint courses (400-level undergraduate History courses, with supplemented MA reading and coursework requirements), may fulfil up to 6 credits of the required elective requirement*. MA students may not repeat the same 400-level courses that they took in the undergraduate programme at UM. With prior approval of the Department of History Graduate Studies Committee, up to two of the required electives may be post-graduate level non-history courses (within UM, but outside of the History programme). 9 INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND PUBLIC POLICY ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Applicants should have achieved the equivalent* of an overall result of Grade C+ or better in the Bachelor s degree studies. * (equivalent to 2.3 on the 4.0 GPA scale, 14 on the 20-point scale, or 70 out of 100.) English Language Proficiency (According to the University standards) is required Applicant with relevant undergraduate training or working experience, or with demonstrated knowledge in international relations or public administration, will be given a higher priority in admission assessment. Other requirements are in accordance to the University Admission Regulations. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS The medium of instruction is English. Courses are offered normally in daytime. A student is required to submit a thesis written in English and has an oral defence of that thesis. COURSE DURATION The normal period of study is two academic years (24 months). 10 EVALUATION Students are required to pass and achieve an overall average of B- in four compulsory courses and four elective courses in the first phase of study. They are then allowed to enter the thesis stage and to prepare theses under the guidance of assigned supervisors. Students may only submit and present theses in agreement with their supervisors. A panel of examiners will be appointed by the Academic Council of FSH to examine each thesis and conduct an oral examination on the subject of that thesis. 11 EUROPEAN STUDIES (The Master of Arts in European Studies will only be offered for regular admissions only) OBJECTIVES Three main objectives can be pointed out for the offering of a Master Course in European Studies in the region. They are related to the following aspects: The need to prepare a set of experts that could become the links between the Asia- Pacific Region and the European Union. The preparation of students who intend to follow post-graduate studies in Europe. This is especially relevant to Macao, to develop the capacity of knowledge in European issues, as far as the Territory can have a function as the go-between of Europe, China and the Asia-Pacific Region. This Master s programme is organized in two parts: course work and thesis. As far as academic backgrounds are concerned, a priority is given to the following courses: Economics Management Public Administration Sociology Law The Master s programme gives 23.6 credits. The University of Macau awards the certificate. MASTER OF SOCIAL SCIENCES Majors can be chosen from this programme: Clinical Psychology Criminology Economics CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY INTRODUCTION The Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities offers one master s programme. The Master of Social Sciences in Clinical Psychology is a full-time, twoyear, 60 credit-hour, master-level programme that trains students in the scientist-practitioner tradition. The programme consists of five semesters over the span of two years. Students are expected to carry a full load of approximately 15 credits, which includes clinical field placement (practicum) in community organizations, each semester during the academic year. Multiple-course sequences covering psychotherapy and assessment, as well as courses in ethics, research methods, problematic gambling, and health and wellness, provide foundational knowledge. Primary candidate targets are graduates of 4-year undergraduate degree programmes with a major or minor in psychology. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS* A bachelor s degree in psychology OR a bachelor s degree (or higher) in another area and completion of university courses in: (1) Statistics, (2) Social Psychology, (3) Abnormal Psychology, (4) Developmental Psychology, (5) Personality Psychology, (6) Psychological Testing or Assessment, (7) Learning, Memory, and Cognition, AND (8) Biological Psychology. GPA of 2.70 (80%) or higher for regular admissions. Minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test), 213 (computer-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or its equivalent; or a CET Band 6 Certificate. These requirements do not apply to students who have graduated from the University of Macau or another university where English was the language of instruction. Students currently completing their bachelor s degree and expecting to graduate before commencement of the master s programme are welcome to apply. Admission will be conditional until completion of the degree. *Remark: The Master of Social Sciences in Clinical Psychology will only be offered for regular admissions. CRITERIA FOR STUDENT SELECTION Applicants will be selected by the Graduate Admission Committee chaired by the coordinator of the programme and according to the following criteria: 1) The applicant s educational curriculum vitae and academic standing, 2) The applicant s demonstrated English-language communication skills (oral and written), 3) The applicant s professional and volunteer experiences relevant to clinical psychology. Applicants are required to submit: 15

16 i. academic transcripts, ii. two letters of recommendation, iii. curriculum vitae, iv. TOEFL, IELTS, or CET scores as described above, v. writing sample in American Psychological Association (APA) publication format and based on an assigned topic to be announced by the programme (applicants should check the Psychology Department website periodically for announcement of the topic and further instructions), vi. personal statement that includes research and professional interests, vii. GRE (General) results, if available, are strongly encouraged. Materials relevant to areas v, vi, and vii above should be combined in a pdf file and uploaded in the Others field in supporting documents section of the online application. It is also highly recommended that applicants send a hardcopy of all of their application materials to the Department of Psychology. Short-listed applicants are required to interview with programme faculty (only the strongest candidates will be invited to interview). Applicants should check the Department of Psychology website for information about the interview dates. LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION Classroom instruction is in English. Proficiency in Cantonese is a distinct benefit in most practicum placements and is highly recommended. A theses and oral defence are to be completed in English. COURSE DURATION The normal period of study is two years, including summer. Courses are primarily conducted in daytime and during weekdays. Students are expected to complete clinical practicum training concurrently with coursework. A minimum of 1,000 hours of practicum training is required and may involve daytime, evening, and weekend hours. Coursework, practicum training, and research are integrated in the 2 full-year programme. NUMBER OF STUDENTS The programme seeks to enroll approximately 23 students per cohort. Additional qualified applicants will be placed on a waiting list. Students are usually admitted to the programme in alternative years. The next application period will be academic year. 18 CRIMINOLOGY PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES This programme aims to achieve academic excellence, serve the needs of the local criminal justice community, and contribute to a safer and more just society in Macao, China, and beyond. The Master s programme provides an advanced education for qualified college graduates and professionals who work in governmental and non-governmental agencies and related institutions. It is designed to increase students academic knowledge, critical thinking ability, problem-solving skills, and research competence that will prepare them for future roles as capable administrators, practitioners, educators, and researchers. It also prepares students for a more advanced study leading to a doctoral degree in criminology or a related field. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS a. The applicants should meet the requirements of the Admission Regulations for Master s Degree published annually by the Graduate School at University of Macau; b. Applicants from all academic disciplines are welcome to apply, but preference will be given to applicants with a Bachelor s degree in criminology/criminal justice, law, sociology, psychology, public health, political science, public administration, and economics. PERIOD OF STUDY The period of study is two academic years. DAY-TIME/EVENING PROGRAMME This is an evening programme. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Students must complete at least 24 credits of coursework, achieve an accumulated GPA of 2.3 or above and pass the oral defence of their theses in order to graduate. 20 ECONOMICS 1 OBJECTIVES 1.1 To provide high quality academic education and training in the field of economics. The programme will prepare students for employment in the private and public sectors as well as for advanced studies up to doctoral level; 1.2 To produce quality graduates with analytical expertise and practical knowledge that will enable them to function more effectively as economists, policy makers, researchers and educators; and 1.3 To strengthen teaching and research within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSH) and the University, in the areas related to economic science, which ultimately contributes to the Macao society. 2 GENERAL DEGREE STRUCTURE 2.1 The degree programme (M.Soc.Sc. in Economics) is under the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities; 2.2 The programme has three components: (A) Compulsory Courses, (B) Elective Courses, and (C) Dissertation. 3 GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR ADMISSION 3.1 In accordance with the University Admission Regulations; and 3.2 Proof of English proficiency (such as TOEFL minimum score of 550, IELTS 6, or equivalent); and 3.3 A bachelor s degree in economics; or 3.4 Such other qualifications and experience as FSH may approve. 4 MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION 4.1 The medium of instruction is English. 5 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS 5.1 Upon satisfaction of all requirements as prescribed at 2.2, a student will be awarded the degree of Master of Social Sciences in Economics. 6 DURATION OF STUDY 6.1 The minimum and maximum period of candidature for this programme is two and four year respectively. Courses will be conducted in daytime. 7 GENERAL REGULATION 7.1 In this programme, the General Regulations of the University of Macau and internal pedagogic and scientific regulations of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities that are in practice will be enforced, in areas such as registration, enrolment, credit system, classification, class attendance rules and evaluation. 20
