2 Department of Applied Social Sciences The mission of the Department of Applied Social Sciences is to offer quality education and professional training in the disciplines of Applied Sociology, Counselling, Criminology, Psychology, and Social Work, excel in these related research areas, and promote justice and betterment of life in Hong Kong, China and the neighbouring societies. With a team of more than 60 full-time academic staff specializing in a wide array of fields and disciplines in social sciences, the Department prides itself as a truly multi-disciplinary research and education unit. The Department currently offers 10 academic programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 3 Master of Social Work Programme Code: MSW(P71) Normal Duration: Full-time: 2 Years; Part-time: 3 Years Mode of Programme: Combined Minimum No. of Credits Required: Master s Degree: 55 Medium of Instruction: English Programme Objectives The MSW programme is a self-funded programme with the aim to train professionals qualifying for recognized social work qualification (RSW ^) at the Master s degree level. It aspires to train students becoming ethically-oriented social work practitioners being competent, reflective and good in professional practice. ^ On successful completion of the programme, students should be able to: Use appropriate knowledge, theories and demonstrate skills Demonstrate the ability to integrate theory in practice in in social work in order to become competent and professional an innovative way, discover and examine culturally relevant in their practice; social work practice; Reflect on their own practice so that they can intellectually Evaluate professional activities and service programs, changing construct, articulate and evaluate their own philosophy and social needs and advocacy for appropriate welfare reforms practice in reference to social work values and ethics; and service delivery Programme Features 2 years for the full-time MSW degree, with 1 concurrent placement in Year 2 Semester A and 1 block fieldwork placement in Year 2 Semester B (maximum study period: 5 years). Concurrent fieldwork placement is conducted in 17 weeks with 3 days per week or 6 sessions whereas block fieldwork placement is conducted in 10 weeks with 5 days per week; 3 years for the part-time MSW degree to students taking two concurrent fieldwork placements in Year 2 and 3 Semester A & B respectively (maximum study period: 7.5 years). Concurrent fieldwork placement in the part-time study mode is conducted in 25 weeks with 2 days per week or 4 sessions per week; The MSW programme consists of 15 core courses amounting to 49 credits plus another 2 electives carrying 6 credits, making a total of 55 credit-units in the programme; Entrance Requirements To be eligible for admission, you must: 900 fieldwork training hours (800 hours direct fieldwork placements plus 100 hours placement preparation or related activities); Strengthening of the training in social work values and ethics, theories and practice to three courses emphasizing working with individuals and families, groups, community work and macro-level social work practice; Addition of human behavior and social environment course subject areas, and social sciences theories for social work to those students without a social sciences training background; Legal knowledge and perspectives for social workers; Enhancing mental health training, practice-related electives and advocacy for social work students; Integrative Social Work Seminar to train students becoming competent, reflective and good in professional practice. hold a recognized bachelor s degree from one of the universities in Hong Kong or from any overseas institution recognized for this purpose by the University; or hold such other qualifications as deemed acceptable by University as equivalent to the above; and pass an admission interview. Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement: TOEFL score 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); or Overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or Score 450 in the new College English Test (CET-6) of Chinese mainland or a pass in the old CET-6 test; or Other equivalent qualifications

4 Programme Structure The curriculum of the year 1 of full-time 2 years mode and the year 2 and year 3 of part-time 3 years mode aspires to train students with ethical principles and foundations of social work practice, social work values, and professional ethics, theories and practice skills in working with individual and families, groups and community, social welfare policies, social welfare management, legal issues for social workers and social work research methods. For those students who are without a social sciences training background, they are required to study the course SS5115 Social Sciences Theories for Social Work. The curriculum of the year 2 of full-time 2 years mode and the year 3 of part-time 3 years mode strives to equip students to have the required professional supervised fieldwork training hours and the 100-hour Practicum-related learning workshops, plus the study of Integrative Social Work Seminar and elective courses in practice-related social work practice settings: Assessment and Interventions in Mental Health Counselling, Empowerment-oriented practice with Socially Disadvantaged Groups, Cognitive-Behavioural Interventions, Group Counselling and Therapy, Psychopathology, Negotiation and Mediation in Work, Counselling Children and Youth, Working with Families in Transition, Domestic Violence: Prevention and Treatment, Counselling Older Adults. Mode of Programme Combined mode: Local students taking programme in combined mode can attend full-time (12-18 credit units per semester) or part-time (no more than 11 credit units per semester) study in different semesters. For non-local students, they will be admitted to the programme for full-time study only. Non-local students must maintain the required credit load for their full-time study. Beginning competence in counselling. Transfer learning to work context. Professional preparation for advanced-level counsellor education. For practitioners with experience in counselling: Critical re-examination of counselling theories and the theory-practice link. Continuous professional reflection. Reflectivity and reflexivity in practice. Theorizing from practice and constructing practice knowledge. Developing cultural sensitivity and appreciation of client knowledge and strength. Programme Features A common general counselling foundation with choices of programme electives in three areas: children, youth, and family; health and aging; work and adjustment. A choice of two-semester research route or practicum route of professional preparation. Multiple exit points. Course Load and Duration Students normally take a course load of 6 to 9 credits (about 2 to 3 courses) per semester and complete the programme within 5 to 10 semesters. Classes will be held on weekday evening and Saturday afternoon/evening. Entrance Requirements To be eligible for admission, you must: hold a degree of one of the universities in Hong Kong or of any overseas institution recognized for this purpose by the University; or have obtained an equivalent qualification, or provide evidence of academic and professional attainments acceptable for this purpose by the University; and preferably with two years working experience in social service, education, health, human services, human resources or related areas, and voluntary work experience in counselling-related area. Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement: TOEFL score 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); or Overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or Score 450 in the new College English Test (CET-6) of Chinese mainland or a pass in the old CET-6 test; or Other equivalent qualifications. * The programme currently only operates the part-time mode of study. Students have to take either the counselling practicum or the (research) project earliest in the second year of study, after completing pre-requisite courses and a threshold number of credit units in the first year. A programme review is about to conclude regarding the feasibility of new arrangements for MSSC students to choose a full-time study load.

Student Profile cohort Professional Accreditation: Certified Counsellor The MSSC programme has been accredited by the Hong Kong Professional Counselling Association (HKPCA) since 2011, all graduates after 2004 could be eligible to apply for a full membership at HKPCA.In addition, our graduates who have completed the Counselling Practicum, they could be eligible to apply for a Certified Counsellor Candidate. The HKPCA recognizes all the 120 face-to-face direct client contact hours and 26 individual supervision hours as well as 34 group supervision hours. Therefore, the MSSC graduates could pursue the status of Certified Counsellor after fulfilling the required 330 post-master face-to-face direct client contact hours and 50 supervision hours by HKPCA Approved Supervisor.

8 Curriculum Highlight SS5800 Counselling Theories and Practice to critically examine how selected counselling theories and therapy models are being used by practitioners in the context of exploring the positivist epistemology of counselling practice as revealed in the connection between theories and practice, and to present a postmodern epistemology as an alternative paradigm that conceptualizes counselling as a "conversational art" and skilled performance in counselling as opening up a conversational space for a client-counsellor dyad to co-construct a kinder reality for the client. SS6806 Counselling Practicum to provide practice-based instruction of knowledge, attitudes, and skills required for effective participation in the counselling profession with confidence. It is the culminating activity in the training of professional counsellors with the opportunity for students to apply, under professional support through group and individual supervisions, counselling theories and skills integrally in real-world practice. SS6805 Project to provide hands-on experience in initiating, planning and implementing an independent research project with the view to foster disciplined thinking as a researcher and to develop the capacity for constructing counselling knowledge through empirical investigation. Career Prospects The programme is designed for graduates from diverse disciplinary backgrounds and supports continual professional development. It opens up career fields and enhances career advancement in human services (notably counselling, social work, and health care), education, and human resources management where sensitivity and effectiveness in working with people is an asset. 9 Master of Social Sciences in Applied Psychology Programme Code: MSSAPSY(P21) Normal Duration: Maximum Study Period: Mode of Programme: Intermediate Award: Minimum No. of Credits Required: Medium of Instruction: Full-time: 1 Year; Part-time: 2 Years Full-time: 2.5 Years; Part-time/Combined mode: 5 Years Combined Postgraduate Certificate in Psychology (PGCP) Master s Degree-38; Postgraduate Certificate-27 English Programme Aim and Objectives Aims: The programme aims at providing students with the required knowledge, skills, exposure, and insights for (1) analyzing human behaviors from a psychological perspective, (2) developing research expertise in a specific area in applied psychology, and (3) pursuing advanced professional training and a career in psychology. Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs): Upon successful completion of this Programme, students should be able to: evaluate major principles/theories in core areas of psychology; apply major psychological theories/principles to analyze human behaviors in real life situations; evaluate research evidence published in psychological journals; design and carry out psychological research independently; and appreciate the close connection between psychology and everyday experiences. Programme Features Focus on an integration of theories and research skills. Designed primarily to provide degree-holders having no undergraduate training in psychology with the necessary knowledge, skills and exposure for pursuing further study and a career in psychology. Credit Transfer could be granted for equivalent level of study. Average contact hour is 6 to 9 hours per week. Classes meet primarily on weekday evenings. Entrance Requirements To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and: have a recognized bachelor's degree from one of the universities in Hong Kong or from any overseas institutions recognized for this purpose by the University, or an equivalent qualification, or have evidence of academic and professional attainments acceptable for this purpose by the University, AND provide documentary evidence that you have completed a course of introductory psychology at a recognized university. An introductory course in psychology is considered to be a course taught at the undergraduate level and provides an overview of major topics in psychology such as biopsychology, perception, cognition, learning, motivation, emotion, intelligence, personality and social psychology. Applicants who have not taken a similar course before will be required to obtain a satisfactory grade from a make-up course before they can be considered for admission. 11 Master of Social Sciences in Psychology of Education Programme Code: MSSPSYED (P32) Normal Duration: 2 Years Maximum Study Period: 5 Years Mode of Programme: Part-time Intermediate Award: Postgraduate Certificate in Inclusive Education (PGCIE) Minimum No. of Credits Required: Master s Degree: 30; Postgraduate Certificate: 15 Medium of Instruction: English The Programme The Master of Social Sciences in Psychology of Education is intended to be an advanced training for teachers and related professionals. The programme puts heavy emphasis on the application of psychological principles in the field of education in general and inclusive education in particular. Programme Aim and Objectives The primary aim of the programme is to equip students with comprehensive and in-depth study of psychological theories and studies in relation to the practice of education. Upon successful completion of this Programme, students are expected to: explore the contemporary issues in the field of psychology of education and its application in inclusive education; examine analytically the philosophy and values relating to the education of students with diverse educational needs in Hong Kong; use a wide variety of teaching strategies and initiate curriculum adaptation for students with diverse educational needs; carry out educational research with appropriate research techniques; and solve issues in and devise innovative solutions for the field of psychology of education by applying knowledge of human motivation, psychopathology and counselling practices. 13 Master of Social Sciences in Applied Sociology Programme Code: MSSAS(P36) Normal Duration: Full-time: 1 Year; Part-time: 2 Years Maximum Study Period: Full-time: 2.5 Years; Part-time/Combined mode: 5 Years Mode of Programme: Combined Intermediate Award: Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Sociology (PGDAS); Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Sociology (PGCAS) Minimum No. of Credits Required: Master s Degree: 30 Medium of Instruction: English What is Applied Sociology? Applied sociologists use a broad range of theoretical principles in sociology and sociological research methods to analyse and recommend solutions to various social problems and difficulties, be it individual or organizational, undergoing social changes. As sociological practitioners, their skills and training can be applied in a number of social settings and issues in the government, nongovernment and private sectors. Applied sociologists are often called upon by these organizations to develop research projects and provide information with solutions that can be useful to their development. Examples would be the conduct of opinion polls on public responses to policies and the tracking of the popularity for various kinds of interest groups; programme evaluations to assess the effectiveness of social service for welfare organizations for quality management and development; impact analysis of policies and plans for the government; consumer studies for business development and other problem-based studies in healthcare and education. Programme Aims and Objectives This unique programme provides education to equip students with theories and methods of Applied Sociology, with an emphasis on the application side. The programme aims to train social science practitioners with sound knowledge in the theory and practice of sociology to help people, organizations and communities develop innovative solutions, and to accomplish excellence in undertaking social research. Programme Features Six core courses which provide a solid foundation on sociology theories and social research methodologies. Integrative Project: the programme provides a problem-based "Integrative Project". The purpose of the Project is to provide a practice opportunity to students with supervision to apply sociological theories, methods, skills and professional orientations, and ethics. The Project will focus on an actual problem or issue. Students may be placed in a practice site, such as commercial firms, public sector organizations, social services settings, and civil society organizations. Students can select any two electives from a list of courses. All students are admitted to the Master programme. If students are unable to complete the full Master level, they may be considered for the award of Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma, subject to the completion of at least 12 or 24 credits respectively, and the fulfillment of stipulated requirements. Students can decide on their own study path, schedule and load for each semester in order to complete the programme in 2 to 5 years. Such flexible nature allows students to pace and plan their own study to best suit their personal and career development needs. With special arrangement, students might also be able to complete their studies within 1 year.
