Smart Grid : A Paradigmatic Change EU Energy Policy Strategic Ambition and Scope ICT is the key enabler for Smart Grid Meeting the EU s climate change and energy policy objectives for 2020 and beyond will require a major transformation of our electricity infrastructure integrating an increasing amount of renewable energy generation realizing energy saving and efficiency enhancing grid security developing the internal energy market Make the overall electricity system smarter through the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)
World-wide and in Europe investments in Smart Grids are growing Source: JRC Reference Report Smart Grid projects in Europe, European Commission JRC-IE
Europe has a number of serious challenges with respect to Smart Grids Source: JRC Reference Report Smart Grid projects in Europe, European Commission JRC-IE
EIT ICT Labs Smart Energy Systems focusses on innovations on selected topics Smart Energy Prosumer Experience New business models and practices Changes to consumer acceptance and behavior via experience and living labs Technical Infrastructures for Smart Grid Integration of ICT in electricity networks Data Privacy and Security
EIT ICT Labs Smart Energy Systems acts as a catalyst on large European Projects
EIT ICT Labs and InnoEnergy jointly develop Future Scenarios for Smart Energy Systems Experts from both KICs perform strategic foresighting to identify possible future scenarios Key future challenges for the energy sector have been identified: Distributed energy resources Large scale renewable energy Demand response to enable active participation of prosumers Concrete business opportunities and use cases will be derived starting 2012 The KICs collaborate in education at the annual SES Summer School
i EIT ICT Labs develops new Smart Grids Business Models for existing and new stakeholders Producer Stock exchange o Utility Network Operator o Aggregator o i o Customer The activity integrates the views of multidisciplinary stakeholders Utilities and network operators ICT companies New business models are investigated A clear business case for investment is a priority requirement for the smart grid Aggregators play an important role in setting-up market platforms System integration to enhance the business case of individual technologies An important input for the activity is a European landscape of regulation which has been started in 2011 within EIT Labs
Networked Smart Energy Systems Security The activity addresses 3 key challenges regarding security for smart grid 24/7 availability of the electricity grid Fraud prevention Data privacy and integrity An overview of European standardization will be derived A European network of smart grid experts is created building also on the network from FP7 carrier project NESSoS
Open Smart Energy Systems Experience Labs investigate prosumer involvement The open SES Experience Lab builds on existing labs and connects partners from 6 European countries A large scale technical & economical feasibility study is performed based on Stakeholder analysis and usability trials Virtual co-simulation and real life data Potential benefits are highlighted to identify strategies for active prosumer involvement Participation in the energy market More transparent bills & energy savings Source: Siemens
The European Virtual Smart Grid Lab will create a network of labs and demonstrators The activity will link Smart Grid Labs in the nodes: Identifying potential for collaboration between partners Linking existing Test beds Smart Grid algorithms as well as hybrid simulations (hardware and software) will be run The European Virtual Smart Grid Lab will be ready for use during the second quarter of 2012 First tests expected to be carried out starting third quarter of 2012
