3 Gaps in Education We ask transfer applicants to account for every regular academic term since completion of their secondary education, and to report all prior credit attempted and/or completed and all institutions attended since high school. Unfortunately, applicants frequently do not comply. We hear the following: I didn t think it was transferable. I don t need the credit. I don t want the credit. I can t get my transcript. I want to start over. It saves evaluation time and demonstrates students integrity when they complete the UC application with an explanation for all gaps in education.

7 Limitations Two similar courses, each is transferable, but if a student takes both, UC will award credit for only one course. STATISTICS often listed under several departments: MATH, PSYCHOLOGY, SOCIOLOGY, and STATISTICS. See the limitation for MATH 10, MATH 57, PSYC 7, SOC7 combined: maximum credit, one course (see previous slide). Two series of courses, UC will award credit for only one series. PHYSICS example Trig-based Physics and Calculus-based Physics Total transferable units will be reduced.

8 Partial Credit Make sure to always benefit of the student Example: De Anza, Math 41, 42 and 43 combined Max credit 5 semester units/7.5 quarter units.

10 Sequential Coursework There are a few subjects that are generally offered in sequential order such as biology, chemistry, languages other than English (aka foreign language), math and physics. General rules: Lower level courses can not be taken after passing a higher level course. A D- grade or higher is considered passing Check prerequisites for course patterns and footnotes in Assist.org.

13 How does UC evaluate an I and a WF Grade? Check the academic regulations of the institution to determine how to calculate an Incomplete ( I ) grade. At most collegiate institutions, an I lapses after one academic year. Check the student s: academic records, additional comments, personal statement, Transfer Academic Update or contact the student directly for an explanation about the I grade. After checking with the academic regulations of the institution to determine how to calculate a WF grade. At most collegiate institutions, a WF grade is treated like an F grade.

15 Transfer Academic Update What Happens if the TAU is NOT Submitted? Priority deadline is January 31 st Campuses review through March but no guarantee late submissions and/or changes will be reviewed

16 Lower Division Transfer Credit Maximum Students will be granted up to 70 semester/105 quarter units of credit for transferable lower division (LD) coursework completed at any institution or combination of institutions. Transferable units beyond this limit earn subject credit. AP, IB, and/or A-Level exam units are not included in the limitation and do not put applicants at risk of being denied admission for excess units. UC units (including Extension, summer, cross/concurrent, UC EAP, and regular academic year) are not limited. They are added to the transferable lower division transfer credit from other institutions, and may put applicants at risk of being denied admission to another UC due to excessive units. 21 Former UC Student On Academic Probation at UC Ask the student: Are you now or have you ever been on academic probation at UC? Former UC student in poor academic standing: less than 2.0 overall GPA or less than 2.0 GPA in the last term at UC. UC campuses do not consider applicants for admission who were not in good standing at another UC. The best advice is to return to the original campus and raise the UC GPA(get off academic probation) before attempting to transfer to a different UC.

22 Former UC Student To IGETC or Not Transferring to a different UC Campus IGETC is acceptable but may not be necessary depending on the major Returning to the same UC Campus IGETC is not acceptable
