17 Princeton University How Many U.S. Jobs Might Be Offshorable? Alan S. Blinder, March 2007 Ranked occupations according to how easy/hard it is to offshore the work either physically or electronically based on selected O*NET characteristics Estimated between 22% and 29% of all U.S. jobs are or will be potentially offshorable within a decade or two Found little or no correlation between an occupation s offshorability and the skill level of its workers (as measured either by educational attainment or wages) Controlling for education, the most highly offshorable occupations were already paying significantly lower wages in

18 National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Study found that psychosocial, work organization, and environmental job characteristics from the O*NET database can successfully be linked to large-scale health surveys The data linkage method used may provide other researchers with job descriptors for use in research, surveillance, and workplace redesign Linkages between health data and occupational factors can provide surveillance data to monitor the changing associations between working conditions and specific disorders for workers in different occupations

20 Center for Hospitality Research of Cornell University Ability versus Personality: Factors that Predict Employee Job Performance (Tracey, Sturman & Tews, 2007) Used O*NET definitions, education and training requirements, tasks, and required knowledges, skills, and abilities Tested hypothesis that cognitive ability is more important for predicting performance among inexperienced employees than among experienced employees in frontline restaurant jobs Also hypothesized that conscientiousness was more valid for predicting performance among experienced employees than inexperienced employees These hypotheses were supported in their research

21 Editorial Projects in Educational Research Center Learning and Earning (Swanson, 2007) published in Education Week Examined the relationship between education and pay using the O*NET database and the 2005 American Community Survey. Relied on the strong correlation between educational attainment and O*NET job zones Found that only a small percent of people working in low job zones have attained the levels of education or training associated with high job zones and vice versa. Looked at median incomes within each of the five O*NET Job Zones Median incomes for workers in Job Zone 1 occupations are about 20 percent of the median income for workers in Job Zone 5 occupations
