6 Research and enterprise Our researchers are passionate about identifying and solving real-life problems and sharing their knowledge and experience with our students. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) more than 60% of our research was ranked as internationally excellent or world leading. The University s research changes the world we live in. We have developed state-of-the-art cancer treatments and diagnostic devices; we predict the impact of tidal flood surges and long-term climate change; and our Wilberforce Institute for Slavery and Emancipation is mapping out and exposing the shocking reality of modern slavery through projects such as the worldrenowned Global Slavery Index. Our research ambition is matched by our impressive facilities: In addition to our experimental spaces and computer labs, the Allam Building focusses on advances in cardiovascular disorders and cancers, and we also have a research station at The Deep, which houses a Total Environment Simulator that can recreate a range of conditions from tidal flows to river channels on Mars. Computer scientists in the unique Hull Immersive Visualization Environment have created virtual-reality wind turbines utilising the very latest 3D simulation and Oculus Rift technology to assist those working in the Humber region s burgeoning green energy empire. The Logistics Institute, based at Hull University Business School, has an impressive track record of collaborating with industry partners to identify real-world solutions and in 2014, the University announced that it is investing in the creation of five new research institutes. These will comprise a maritime institute; an energy and environment institute; a Humber development institute; an institute for clinical and applied health research; and the Institute for Research on Culture and the Creative Industries to capitalise on opportunities arising from Hull being the UK City of Culture in These new centres will further enhance the University s reputation for research and continue to attract and support exciting academics who want to ensure a better future for all of us. 7 Below: Hull s Freedom Festival Hull: UK City of Culture 2017 Hull has been named the UK City of Culture 2017 and, if you choose to study here, you will be at the heart of 365 days of world-class arts and culture. Our campus already has a rich cultural heritage running through its red-brick architecture. Philip Larkin was the librarian here during his most prolific years as a poet, and the Brynmor Jones Library houses the University s art collection and exhibition hall. Other creative spaces on campus include the Gulbenkian Centre and Middleton Hall, which is currently undergoing a major revamp to incorporate improved recording and rehearsal facilities. But 2017 will bring further excitement. Some of the 1,500 events planned for the city will be hosted on campus alongside exciting yet-to-be-revealed installations, a University programme of events and developing artworks over the year. With 25 festivals, 15 national and international commissions and 12 artist residencies in the pipeline, there will be big names to go and see and plenty of opportunities to get involved. Expect mass-voice choirs, flashmob opportunities and collaborative pieces to appeal to even the most reserved of talents. There will also be CV-boosting openings to volunteer behind the scenes, with many work experience options available. 8 Learning experience The University of Hull was ranked 6th out of 47 universities globally for learning.* During your time at the University, you will develop many new skills and increase your knowledge and selfconfidence considerably. At the end of your learning experience, you will have developed the ability to evaluate information critically and present it in an effective way. The excellent research skills you learn will allow you to locate, extract and analyse information and data from multiple sources and draw important conclusions. You will be expected to discuss, evaluate and form your own opinions about what you are learning. If you study a science subject, you will also learn through practical laboratory work. We will ensure that you become equally skilled at working independently and as part of a team. By planning your studies, you will learn how to manage your time an ability required in every profession. Your IT skills will inevitably improve as you progress, and if necessary there are short courses you can take to help you with this. You will also learn how to write fluently, using correct terminology and proper citation. I have been particularly impressed by how Business School courses include specialist modules which are designed to equip students for their future careers. 9 How do you want to study? Postgraduate Undergraduate At the University of Hull, you can choose from Single, Joint or major/minor Honours degrees, most of which are completed over three full-time years. Single Honours Joint Honours Major/minor degrees A Single Honours degree focuses on modules drawn from a single subject area, with options to include a limited number of modules from a list of designated free electives. Both Joint Honours and major/minor degrees combine two key subject areas. In Joint Honours degrees, an equal weighting is given to each subject; they are referred to with an and in the middle: for example, Business and Marketing. The weighting of major/minor degrees is split in favour of the first subject, which usually accounts for 70% of your modules. These are referred to as X with Y : for example, Law with Business. Postgraduate Taught Research Masters MBA Doctorate On a Masters (MA, MSc, LLM, Med, MBiol, MChem, MBiochem) degree you are expected to work independently and pursue your research interests. You will also attend lectures, seminars and will be assessed through exams, the quality of written essays and your final dissertation. On a research Masters degree (MRes, MPhil), you dedicate your time to conducting research. Your assessment is based on the quality of your dissertation. The MBA is an intense one-year course to enhance and develop your career in business. There are several taught modules that are delivered through lectures, presentations and group discussions. A final dissertation or company-based project provides you with the opportunity to conduct research into your areas of interest within the subject area. During a Doctorate (PhD), you spend between three and four years working on a single research project. Throughout this time, you receive guidance from your academic supervisor, with a formal review after approximately one year. At the end of the research project, you write and present a thesis. Foundation Industrial placement The University offers a number of full-time degree programmes which include a foundation year. These are intended for students from countries where the normal school leaving qualification does not fully meet the entry requirement for Bachelors degrees at UK universities, or for students whose subject choice at school was not appropriate for their chosen degree. Lasting for four years, these programmes provide international students with the opportunity to acquire the additional skills that they require before beginning their degree. Foundation programmes are available in many subject areas. To get the edge in the employability market with quality work experience during your degree, you can find a number of courses which include a professional year in industry or structured work placements (normally sandwiched between Year 2 and your final year hence the expression sandwich course ). There are also internship and work experience opportunities available outside the regular academic year for those not on a dedicated sandwich course. Integrated Masters Study Abroad A number of courses, including Mathematics and Electronic Engineering, offer an integrated Masters qualification following an additional year of study. Many other courses contain separate options for future study, and you may be eligible for a loyalty scholarship a special fees discount if you choose to stay on after your first degree. If you are looking to experience time overseas as part of your degree, you will find many courses across the University of Hull which incorporate a year abroad in Year 3. Students on other courses can also apply to spend a year or a semester overseas. 14 The University of Hull

10 Foundation courses leading to a Bachelors degree University of Hull foundation programmes provide a pathway for students who do not meet the required academic profile, or students whose previous subject choices have not included the necessary prerequisites for direct entry to a threeyear undergraduate course. They offer a firm grounding for subsequent degree programmes, allowing students direct entry to a three-year Bachelors course with honours. While undertaking the foundation programme, students are fully integrated into University and campus life and are taught on site by academic staff.
