COURSE DESCRIPTION Industrial / Organizational (I/O) Psychology is an applied science. Specifically, it is the application of scientific methods and psychological principles to industrial and organizational behavior. Topics include: job analysis, personnel selection, performance appraisal, assessment, the legal context for personnel decisions, work motivation, work attitudes, leadership, and occupational health. The ultimate objective of this discipline is to maximize both employee well-being and organizational effectiveness. This course covers the application of psychological principles to such problems as employee selection, supervision, job satisfaction, and work efficiency. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Understand the important topic areas within the field of industrial psychology. 2. Explain and evaluate the theories, research, and practices within the field of industrial psychology. 3. Demonstrate how the theories and research in industrial-organizational psychology can be applied to help solve real-world problems. 4. Discuss the complex issues facing industrial psychology today and how these issues affect workers, organizations, and society. COURSE STRUCTURE One of the major advantages to an online course is its flexibility since all course materials, assignments, and tests are available to you 24-hours a day. The course has been structured into five modules that include a total of 14 lessons. Each lesson begins with readings which serve as an introduction to the lesson topic. Readings are taken from the Schultz & Schultz text and other resources as listed in each lesson. This content might also include PowerPoint lectures or a number of interactive activities that you can click on to extend your

2 learning and enhance your experience in the course. Everything is structured in a step-by-step fashion. If you have any questions or comments at any time, feel free to me. I am excited to have your participation in this course and I look forward to your contributions to it! 5 LESSON QUIZZES Each lesson will be followed by a short multiple-choice quiz. The purpose of the quiz is to provide you with an opportunity to assess your learning and to become familiar with the nature of questions that you will see on each of your five examinations (see Exams, below). We will be covering 14 lessons, each accompanied by a 10-point quiz, for a total of 140 lesson quiz points. You will have 30 minutes to complete each quiz. Once you answer a question, you cannot revisit that question, so check your answer BEFORE moving on to the next question. After each quiz question, you will receive feedback. You must score at least 7 out of 10 points to be able to proceed to the next quiz or module exam. You only have THREE attempts to attain the minimum score. EXAMS At the end of each module (after you have completed all the lesson quizzes related that module), you will take a cumulative exam for that module. You are responsible for all of the material assigned in each module. Multiple choice questions will be worth 1 point each. Module 1 Exam: 50 multiple choice questions (60 minutes) = 50 points Module 2 Exam: 115 multiple choice questions (125 minutes) = 115 points Module 3 Exam: 90 multiple choice questions (100 minutes) = 90 points Module 4 Exam: 85 multiple choice questions (95 minutes) = 85 points Module 5 Exam: 55 multiple choice questions (65 minutes) = 55 points PROJECTS MODULE 1 PROJECT: CAREER EXPLORATION WITH O*NET. Explore a career of interest through O*NET and write a 3 page paper summarizing research on the topic (50 points). Detailed instructions will be provided. MODULE 3 PROJECT: AFFIRMATIVE ACTION: UNIFORM GUIDELINES. Read theuniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures and explore issues related to affirmative action. Write a 3 page summary and analysis (100 points). Detailed instructions will be provided. MODULE 4 PROJECT: WORKPLACE ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES. Explore the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and read about workplace accidents. Write a 3 page summary and analysis (100 points). Detailed instructions will be provided. MODULE 5 PROJECT: FLEXIBLE WORK SCHEDULES. Explore the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and read about work schedules. Write a 3 page summary and analysis (100 points). Detailed instructions will be provided. Note that Module 1 Project is due before the end of Module 1; There is NO project for Module 2. Module 3 Project is due before the end of Module 3; Module 4 Project is due before the end of Module 4; and Module 5 Project is due before the end of Module 5.

6 DISCUSSION BOARD CONTRIBUTIONS Given that this is a web-based course, your only method of interacting with your fellow classmates and your instructor will be via the Internet. In order to enrich your learning in the course beyond the course readings, you will be required to participate in one discussion board topic per module, posting at least three contributions in relation to each topic. These are contemporary issues in the field of industrial/organizational psychology, focusing on critical conceptual, empirical, or practical issues that continue to generate significant controversy within the field. Your role will be to respond to discussion questions and posts with your own thoughts and reactions, based on your readings, opinions, and experiences. Please note these questions are designed to give you the opportunity to reflect more deeply and to develop your own opinions and positions about key contemporary issues in the field of I/O Psychology. Please note that your discussion board posts will be evaluated on the following criteria: 1. Critical analysis of the issue 2. Reflection of your opinion based on your experiences AND the readings. Please make sure to cite the readings in your posts. Your contributions to each discussion will be worth 50 points (25 points for the portion and 25 points for the online posts), except the discussion for Module 5 which will be worth 65 points (25 points for the portion and 40 points for the online posts). Basic requirements include a minimum length of at least 300 words in length PER discussion topic for each module. Contributions below this length will receive 0 points automatically---no EXCEPTIONS. Additionally, you must post a minimum of three posts per discussion. These may include your initial lengthy response to the question and 2 additional comments to classmates or the professor. 7 DISCUSSION TOPICS Module 1 Discussion: Via , submit a description of the contemporary challenges for I-O psychologists. (25 points) In the discussion thread, discuss the following question: Describe a real problem experienced by an organization with which you are familiar that could be solved by an I/O psychologist. Be specific about the ways in which an I/O psychologist could be helpful in solving this problem. Focus on a problem that would specifically benefit from the type of expertise that an I/O Psychologist may offer. Consider the Schultz & Schultz text, Module 1 lectures and your own experiences to address this discussion topic. (25 points) Module 2 Discussion: Via , submit a brief description of the following research methods: laboratory experiments, field experiments, quasi-experiments, and observational methods. (25 points) In the discussion thread, discuss the following question: Your psychology professor delivers a lecture regarding how multiple research designs can be used to study I/O psychology. She asks you to describe research that may best be conducted using laboratory experiments, field experiments, quasi-experiments, and observational methods. Be sure that you provide your own example for each type of study and explain why that research question is best addressed with that research design. Consider the Schultz & Schultz text, Module 2 lectures, and your own experiences to address this discussion topic. (25 points) Module 3 Discussion: Via , submit a brief description of each of the four leadership theories and the seven motivational theories. (25 points) In the discussion thread, discuss the following question: If you were elected project manager for a long term project, how would you motivate your team to accomplish the project goal? Choose at least one leadership theory and one motivational theory to explain or justify your plan. Why is your approach the best approach? Consider the Schultz & Schultz text, Module 3 lectures, and your own experiences to address this discussion topic. (25 points) Module 4 Discussion: Via , submit a description of the causes of stress in the workplace. (25 points). In the discussion thread, discuss the following question, Your friend Robert retired 15 years ago. He enjoys reading about business issues in magazines, but he is unable to understand why there is a lot of discussion about stress in the workplace. He tells you that when he was working, he never felt stressed, nor did he hear about his coworkers being stressed. How would you explain to Robert why many workers are stressed? Provide your views about why employers should be concerned about worker stress. Consider the Schultz & Schultz text, Module 4 lectures, and your own experiences to address this discussion topic. (25 points) Module 5 Discussion: Via , submit a brief description of the factors to consider when advertising an online business? (25 points). In the discussion thread, discuss the following question: Imagine that you work for a company that sells vitamins and herbal remedies, and the company wants to begin to sell their products on the internet. To whom will you target your advertising? What factors will you consider when targeting this audience? What factors will customers consider before purchasing products online? Consider the Schultz & Schultz text, Module 5 lectures, and your own experiences to address this discussion topic. (40 points)

Course Deadline and Extension Policy: Each student s online course expires 16 weeks from the date of enrollment. Although there is flexibility in completing the coursework, the course should be started as soon as the course materials are received since the 16 week period has already begun. The coursework should be submitted as it is completed. All final coursework needs to be completed and submitted for grading at least 2 weeks prior to the course expiration date. Any due dates that may be in E-Learning in Sakai do not apply to the student s course expiration date. Each student is allowed 16 weeks to complete a course. If the time is about to expire, the student will be assigned a failing grade ("E"). If the student has made sufficient academic progress, which is defined as completing at least 50% of the course, the student may petition the instructor for a course extension. After you have contacted your instructor for an extension, each extension request will be administratively evaluated. Dropping or Withdrawing From a Course: A tuition refund may be granted after a student submits a written request for withdrawal from a course within 30 days of enrollment. This request must be in writing and may be sent by fax or . All requests will receive written responses. Refunds will be the amount of tuition, less $25.00 per course. If a credit card was used to pay for tuition, the refund will be in the form of credit to that card. A refund can be issued on course materials at the time of withdrawal if they are returned within 30 days of sale and are in their original condition. Allow 6 8 weeks for refund checks. Please call our office ( ) for up to date refund policies. No refunds are granted after 30 days. Students with disabilities who need to drop a course due to disability-related reasons are allowed to petition for additional drops. For more information, contact the Disability Resource Center.
