2 Background of the CAVPP Project of the California Preservation Program to provide digitization, preservation, and access services for historic California audiovisual recordings Response to 2007 CPP survey on the state of California s audiovisual recordings 2010: 50 recordings from 22 institutions Now: 2127 recordings from 77 institutions Funding from California State Library, NEH, & IMLS.

3 CAVPP Provides: Digitization managing digitization workflow, adding administrative and technical metadata, (and creating PBCore), working with vendors, quality control of files Access via the Internet Archive California Light and Sound Preservation files on LTO tape (two copies)

4 77 partner archives, libraries, and museums 2,127 recordings available online 1,200 recordings digitized and uploaded since December 2013

6 Digitize In-House or use a Vendor? CAVPP uses a vendor for digitization due to: Quantity of recordings 1200 digitized in our Winter 2013 round, 1000 more in process CAVPP intended as low-cost practical digitization model for small organizations who don t have AV experts available.

9 Video QC Process QC Form Create QC form for each institution. Fill out a form for each title. Sample form available at:

13 Video QC Process Watch preservation file Watch a minute and a half at the beginning, middle, and end looking for anything that might have been introduced during digitization (is not inherent to original recording). Look for: Are there bars and tone on the tape? If so, are they correct? Artifacts Color and Brightness look at scopes and CRT Does the content match the title?
